Towering personality: Akkitham. So says Robert Browning. But has my reach exceeded my grasp? I cannot say. But the heaven? I have experienced it in my writings. My life and my poetry are inseparable. I write what I do and I do as I write. My life can be read in my poems. He passed away when I was five. Why his eyes were always filled with tears? This was a question, which always haunted me. He had six sons and four daughters. But all his sons passed away during their childhood; the girls survived. The answer to my haunting question later flashed in my mind in the form of a verse: Early mentors My tuition master Unnikrishna Menon, his ardent disciple and a great poet Edasseri Govindan Nair and the social reformer V.T. Bhattathiripad were in the forefront of those who influenced the shaping of my personality. When I was seven and a half, I began learning Sanskrit, astrology and Rig Veda. This continued for six years.

29. Ponnani - The Cultural Potpourri Of Malabar
Edasseri Memorial Committee Edasseri Govindan Nair is ever remembered as a leading light of the postindependence modern Malayalam poetry.
http://www.angelfire.com/country/ponnani/arts.html
Home Topography Administration History ... Contact Ponnani is a land of rich cultural heritage and has gifted a number of socio-cultural personalities to the nation. Ponnani has also produced many writers of fame. The following are the notable personalities among them. Literature: Sheikh Zainudhin Makhdum The most notable writer from Ponnani was of course Sheikh Zainudhin Makhdum, the author of Thuhfathul Mujahideen . His treatise on S hafi’te Jurisprudence, Fathul Mueen and Thahfathul Mujahudheen became textbook in Egyptian universities. Thahfathul Mujahudheen (Victory of Fighters) written by Shekh Zainudhin MakhdumII is the first official book in Kerala history Thunjath Ezhuthachan. Ezhuthachan is considered as the ‘Father of Modern Malayalam’. Thunjath Ezhuthachan was born around 450 years ago at Thunchan Parampu in Thrikkandiyoor in (old) Ponnani taluk in Malappuram district. All malayalees consider Thunchan parampu as a holy place. His real name was Ramanujan and signs of brilliance were evident in his childhood. He traveled extensively in search of knowledge and returned to Thrikandiyur, his birthplace, after mastering the religious sciences. Thunchattu Ezhuthachan, the greatest Malayalam poet of all time, wrote his two great epics Adhyatma Ramayanam and Srimahabharatam and two shorter pieces, Irupattinalu Vrittam and Harinama Kirtanam and thereby revolutionized Malayalam language and literature at once. He is rightly regarded as the maker of modern Malayalam and the father of Malayalam poetry. The study of Malayalam should properly begin with the acquisition of the skill to read Ezhuthachan's Ramayanam with fluency. It was in his works that the Sanskrit and Dravidian streams in our language as well as literature achieved a proper synthesis.

Edassery's verses in new hues C. N. Karunakaran's painting, unveiled at Orthic Gallery complements the beauty of Edassery Govindan Nair's poem, `Ambadiyilekku Veendum', which the artist interprets
Painting a picture is one thing, but painting a poem is an altogether different thing. On February 15, C. N. Karunakaran's painting of Edasseri Govindan Nair's poem `Ambadiyilekku Veendum' was unveiled at artist T. Kaladharan's gallery, Orthic. Although literary works have been interpreted before, this was a first for Karunakaran. "I had read my friend Krishna Kumar's review of this particular poem of Edassery's in a daily and I called him up to congratulate him on this well written piece. That is when he suggested that I could paint the poem," reminisces Karunakaran. He avers that the murals of the temples in Kerala, or for that painting and sculptures in most temples draw inspiration from literary works such as the Mahabharata, Ramayana or the Bhagavad Gita or for that matter even in churches. `Ambadiyilekku Veendum' is a fictional episode drawn from the Mahabharata wherein Lord Krishna goes back to the place where he grew up. Krishna and his charioteer Daruka speed towards Ambady where he meets his childhood playmates, the gopikas. The poem deals with what ensues there in terms of the arguments and counter arguments that take place between Krishna and the gopikas. The poem deals with the eternal existential questions that plague man, but in a manner that is different from the usual literary attitudes to the goal of life and the importance of moksha for instance. The poem is more in the positive vein unlike most poems that deal with the modern man's angst. The beauty of most of Edassery's poetry lends itself to paintings as they have the potential to be interpreted on canvas.
