the highest summit of art It shouldn't even be necessary to point out that Eric Eddison's books are the high point of twentieth century literature. It should go without saying that he is the best prose artist in the history of the English-language novel; his writing, and his dialogue in particular, are at least fifteen percent better than whichever lesser genius comes in second (Lord Dunsany, perhaps?). In a saner world, every college freshman would be expected to read his books, and to at least pretend to understand that the themes Eddison presents within them - the cycles of time, the duality of the godhead, human life lived as a work of conscious art - are the closest approach to Truth that are possible in fiction. (And they are only expressible in fantastic fiction, for we must come at these things indirectly and through the side door of Myth.) The reason that Eddison is obscure and his infinite virtues remain almost unsung is, of course, because ours is a civilization, and indeed a world, so unrepentantly degenerate that it isn't capable of understanding his works. A typical professor presented with The Worm or Mistress of Mistresses is in the position of an ape given a laptop computer: the best he can do is to bang his head against it. For what Eddison brings us is truth, at both the spiritual and mundane levels, and truth is more than the little men of this world can bear.

The Conjuring in the Iron Tower
from The Worm Ouroboros, by E. R. Eddison
    It was now gathering dusk,
and weak twilight only entered through the deep
embrasures of the windows that pierced the walls
of the tower, looking to the four quarters of the
heavens. A furnace glowing in the big hearth threw
fitful gleams into the recesses of the chamber, lighting
up strange shapes of glass and earthenware, flasks
and retorts, balances, hour-glasses, crucibles and as-
trolabes, a monstrous three-necked alembic of phos-
phorescent glass supported on a bain-marie, and other instruments of doubtful and unlawful aspect. Under the northern window over against the door- way was a massive table blackened with age, whereon lay great books bound in black leather with iron guards and heavy padlocks. And in a mighty chair beside this table was King Gorice XII., robed in his conjuring robe of black and gold, resting his cheek on his hand that was lean as an eagle's claw. The low light, mother of shade and secrecy, that hovered

the familiar Chinese YinYang symbol is related to the tail-devouring serpent—here the masculine-feminine principles throughout nature are held in balance. Sources Eddison, E. R.

Home Library Ancient Greek alchemical symbol of a serpent eating his tail. The mystical work The Chrysopoeia of Kleopatra has a drawing of the Serpent Ouroboros eating his tail, with the text "One is All." Another emblem illustrates the symbols of gold, silver, and mercury enclosed in two concentric circles with the text "One is the serpent which has its poison according to two compositions" and "One is All and through it is All and by it is All and if you have not All, All is Nothing." The symbol of Ouroboros has also been interpreted as the unity of sacrificer and sacrificed, relating to the symbolism of the mystical life. The symbol dates back to Mesolithic (Azilian) culture and appeared in the symbolism of many races. The Gnostic text Pistis Sophia, describes the disc of the sun as a great dragon with his tail in his mouth. The fourth-century writer Horopollon stated the Egyptians represented the universe as a serpent devouring its own tail, a symbol of eternity and immortality, an image also found on Gnostic gems.

    Eric Rücker Eddison, 1882-1945
    Biographical note
English author, best known for his early romance The Worm Ouroboros [1922] and his three volumes set in the imaginary world Zimiamvia, known as the Zimiamvian Trilogy: Mistress of Mistresses [1935], A Fish Dinner in Memison [1941], and The Mezentian Gate [1958]. These early works of high fantasy drew strong praise from J. R. R. Tolkien (see especially Letter 199 in the collected letters), C. S. Lewis (see the Tribute to E. R. Eddison in On Stories and Other Essays on Literature), and Ursula Le Guin (see the essay "From Elfland to Poughkeepsie" in The Language of the Night). Privately Tolkien found the underlying philosophy rebarbative, and clashed with Eddison at their sole meeting, while he in return thought Tolkien's views "soft". The books are written in a meticulously recreated Jacobean prose style, seeded throughout with fragments, often acknowledged but often frankly stolen, from his favorite authors and genres: Homer and Sappho, Shakespeare and Webster, Norse Saga and French medieval lyric. They exhibit a thoroughly aristocratic sensibility; heroes and villains alike maintain an Olympian indifference to convention. Fellow fantasy author Michael Moorcock wrote that his characters, particularly villains, are more vivid than Tolkien's. Others have observed that while it is historically accurate to depict the great of the world trampling on the lower classes, his characters often treat their subjects with arrogance and insolence, and this is depicted as part of their greatness. Indeed, at the end of The Worm Ouroboros, the heroes, finding peace dull, pray for and get the revival of their enemies, so that they may go and fight them again, regardless of the casualties that such a war would have.
