Edwards, Jonathan
Edwards, Jonathan (1703-1758), third president of Princeton for a brief period in 1758, was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, where his father was pastor. The only son in a family of eleven children, he entered Yale when he was not yet thirteen and graduated four years later at the head of his class. He studied theology, preached in a Presbyterian pulpit in New York, and in 1724 returned to Yale as tutor for two years, the second year as senior tutor and virtual head of the college, the rectorship then being vacant. In 1728 he succeeded his maternal grandfather as pastor at Northampton, Massachusetts, where his preaching brought remarkable religious revivals. But he alienated many of his congregation in 1748 by his proposal to depart from his grandfather's policy of encouraging all baptized persons to partake of Communion and instead to admit to this sacrament only those who gave satisfactory evidence of being truly converted. He was dismissed in 1750. He moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, then a frontier settlement, where he ministered to a tiny congregation and served as missionary to the Housatonic Indians. There, having more time for study and writing, he completed his celebrated work, The Freedom of the Will.

Edwards accepted an appointment as President of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1757. He died from complications arising from a smallpox inoculation on March 22, 1758, less than five weeks after his inauguration. Edwards' published works were primarily designed to defend the Puritan version of Calvinist orthodoxy and his influence on Congregational and Presbyterian theology was profound. His extensive notebooks reveal an interest in philosophical problems for their own sake, however, and his deployment of philosophical arguments in his private papers and published works are both sophisticated and frequently original.

    Biography of Jonathan Edwards
Jonathan Edwards - (1703-1758), American puritan theologian and philosopher
Edwards was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, to Timothy Edwards, pastor of East Windsor, and Esther Edwards. The only son in a family of eleven children, he entered Yale in September, 1716 when he was not yet thirteen and graduated four years later (1720) as valedictorian. He received his Masters three years later. As a youth, Edwards was unable to accept the Calvinist sovereignty of God. He once wrote, "From my childhood up my mind had been full of objections against the doctrine of God's sovereignty… It used to appear like a horrible doctrine to me." However, in 1721 he came to the conviction, one he called a "delightful conviction." He was meditating on 1 Timothy 1:17, and later remarked, "As I read the words, there came into my soul, and was as it were diffused through it, a sense of the glory of the Divine Being; a new sense, quite different from any thing I ever experienced before… I thought with myself, how excellent a Being that was, and how happy I should be, if I might enjoy that God, and be rapt up to him in heaven; and be as it were swallowed up in him for ever!" From that point on, Edwards delighted in the sovereignty of God. Edwards later recognized this as his conversion to Christ. In 1727 he was ordained minister at Northampton and assistant to his maternal grandfather, Solomon Stoddard. He was a student minister, not a visiting pastor, his rule being thirteen hours of study a day. In the same year, he married Sarah Pierpont, then age seventeen, daughter of James Pierpont (1659–1714), a founder of Yale, originally called the Collegiate School. In total, Jonathan and Sarah had eleven children.

Occupation Pastor theologian , and missionary Spouse Sarah Pierpont Signature Jonathan Edwards (October 5, 1703 – March 22, 1758) was a preacher, theologian, and missionary to Native Americans . Edwards "is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologian," and one of America's greatest intellectuals. Edwards's theological work is very broad in scope, but he is often associated with his defense of Reformed theology, the metaphysics of theological determinism, and the Puritan heritage. Recent studies have emphasized how thoroughly Edwards grounded his life's work on conceptions of beauty, harmony, and ethical fittingness, and how central The Enlightenment was to his mindset. Edwards played a critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening , and oversaw some of the first fires of revival in 1733–1735 at his church in Northampton, Massachusetts

    More Sermons by Jonathan Edwards

One of the best accounts of the beginnings of the Great Awakening was written by Edwards in 1736. He entitled it:
A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God
We have reproduced A Faithful Narrative here in its entirety, believing that it is one of the most helpful pieces ever written to understand both the nature of true revival and of genuine conversion. We have also added testimonies from people in our time who were converted in a manner very similar to those in the Great Awakening.
    Great Awakening Style Conversions Today
Following the Great Awakening Edwards wrote one of his greatest masterpieces Religious Affections. In it Edwards detailed what he believed were and were not signs of those who had been truly converted. In this day of prolific false conversion, we believe it is critical to re-examine the words of Edwards regarding this all important subject. You may download the entire text of Religious Affections by clicking on the pdf icon below.

Jonathan Edwards is undoubtedly one of the greatest thinkers in American history. His deep religious devotion and richly reconceived Reformed theology lays at the very heart of religious conservatism. The most affordable edition of his works and letters is Banner of Truth edition.
The Princeton Companion to Jonathan Edwards
by Sang Hyun Lee (Princeton University Press) there is little doubt that Jonathan Edwards is one of the most overlooked creative philosophers in the American tradition. Given that the Yale edition of his collected works has now been completed, and with the rise of the evangelical Christianity the importance of his vision of a Christian nation cannot be underestimated. This volume offers a announced introduction to the major theological themes evident in the remnants of Edwards’ writings. One may quibble about emphasis or even a serious oversight in some instances in these essays, but for someone who is beginning to approach this major American philosophical theologian for the first time, these essays offer that kind of balanced overview to orient the neophyte. It is hoped that Jonathan Edwards will be more appreciated for his ethical vision as well as his evangelical one and that the hellfire and brimstone view that most Americans have of him can be corrected to embrace the cause of moral Christian vision of the good society in a depraved world.

Edwards, Jonathan. A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God. This is Jonathan Edwards
    http://www.revival-library.org/catalogues/1725ff/index1725.html/edwards-memoirs/
Alexander, Archibald The Log College This fascinating book presents a number of biographical sketches of the founder and principal alumni of William Tennent’s theological school, contemptuously called ‘The Log College,’ together with an account of the revivals that followed their ministries. During cold and unreligious times these men are described by Tennent as men who ‘lived fast … they did much for their Lord in a short time…being burning and shining lights, they were consumed while they gave light to others…. Oh that a race of ministers, like-minded, burning with a consuming zeal, might be raised up among us!’ Bennett, Richard The Early Life of Howell Harris Martin Lloyd Jones asked "Would you know something of what is meant by the term "revival"? Would you know the real meaning of, "the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God"? Would you know more of "life in the Spirit," and "prayer in the Spirit," and something of "the powers of the world to come"? Then read this book.
