Eliot, George Biography
George Eliot (1819-1880) - pseudonym for Mary Ann Cross, also Marian Evans, original surname Evans Victorian writer, a humane freethinker, whose insightful psychological novels paved way to modern character portrayals - contemporary of Dostoevsky (1821-1881), who at the same time in Russia developed similar narrative techniques. Eliot's liaison with the married writer and editor George Henry Lewes arise among the rigid Victorians much indignation, which calmed down with the progress of her literary fame. "Marriage, which has been the bourne of so many narratives, is still a great beginning, as it was to Adam and Eve, who kept their honeymoon in Eden, but had their first little one among the thorns and thistles of the wilderness. It is still the beginning of the home epic - the gradual conquest or irremediable loss of that complete union which makes the advancing years as a climax, and age the harvest of sweet memories in common." (from Middlemarch Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) was born in Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire. Her father was a carpenter who rose to be a land agent. When she was a few months old, the family moved to Griff, a 'cheerful red-brick, ivory-covered house', and there Eliot spent 21 years of his life among people that he later depicted in her novels. She was educated at home and in several schools, and developed a strong evangelical piety at Mrs. Wallington's School at Neneaton. However, later Eliot rejected her dogmatic faith. When her mother died in 1836, she took charge of the family household. In 1841 she moved with her father to Coventry, where she lived with him until his death in 1849. During this time she met Charles Bray, a free-thinking Coventry manufacturer. His wife, Caroline (Cara) was the sister of Charles Hennel, the author of a work entitled

    Biography of George Eliot (1819-1880)
Study Guides and Essays by George Eliot Adam Bede Daniel Deronda Middlemarch The Mill on the Floss Silas Marner George Eliot George Eliot was the pseudonym of Mary Anne Evans. The author was born on November 22, 1819, at Arbury Farm, Warwickshire, and was the youngest of five children. Mary Anne was afforded the privileges of a private education. She enjoyed books and learning from a young age; she was introspective and quiet, much like her character Dorothea in Middlemarch , so she was a bit of an anomaly among young women of the time. Unfortunately, Mary Anne was forced to leave school at the age of 19, when her mother died in early 1839. Her father continued to indulge her love of learning, purchasing books for her and helping her to learn German and Italian. In 1841, Mary Anne's father moved them to the larger town of Foleshill, where Mary Anne met Charles and Cara Bray, who would be good friends of hers. Through the Brays, Mary Anne met other friends, and she was introduced to Ralph Waldo Emerson. Mary Anne soon, however, became very self-conscious about her unconventionality among this group of friends. She also began to renounce her faith in Christianity, which caused distance between Mary Anne and her father. Mr. Evans died in 1849, leaving Mary Anne little money in his will. Through the Brays, she met John Chapman, a publisher and bookseller from London. Chapman and Mary Anne became good friends, and he asked Mary Anne to become the behind-the-scenes editor for the

Is this the last line of the book...'for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts, and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life and rest in unvisited tombs'? 'Middlemarch' Quiz

Yes . Dorothea never accomplished the great philanthropic acts that she had hoped, but her life positively affected those around her. I just put this question in because I wanted to use that line I think it's beautiful.
Which character is a true blackmailer? 'Middlemarch' Quiz

Mr. Raffles . Though one might consider both Featherstone and Rosamond to be 'passive-aggressive'-type blackmailers, Raffles is the one who threatens for financial gain (by exposing Bulstrode's past).
By the end of the book, who doesn't end up with the woman he loves?

    Biographical note
Evans, Mary Ann or Marian (“George Eliot”) (1819–1880). — Novelist, was born near Nuneaton, Warwickshire, daughter of Robert E., land agent, a man of strong individuality. Her education was completed at a school in Coventry, and after the death of her mother in 1836, and the marriage of her elder sister, she kept house for her father until his death in 1849. In 1841 they gave up their house in the country, and went to live in Coventry. Here she made the acquaintance of Charles Bray, a writer on phrenology, and his brother-inlaw Charles Hennell, a rationalistic writer on the origin of Christianity, whose influence led her to renounce the evangelical views in which she had been brought up. In 1846 she engaged in her first literary work, the completion of a translation begun by Mrs. Hennell of Strauss’s Life of Jesus . On her father’s death she went abroad with the Brays, and, on her return in 1850, began to write for the Westminster Review , of which from 1851–53 she was assistant-editor. In this capacity she was much thrown into the society of Herbert Spencer and George Henry Lewes, with the latter of whom she in 1854 entered into an irregular connection which lasted until his death. In the same year she translated Feuerbach’s

Must Read Melancholy Romance Wow... This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance. I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.

George Eliot produced over 60 essays and reviews, the majority of which were published in the period 1854–56, immediately preceding her novel-writing career. During this time she published regularly in two radical journals: the quarterly Westminster Review and the weekly Leader. She also contributed a smaller number of essays to the Saturday Review and Fraser’s Magazine. The essays largely took the form of literary reviews, but the freedom of this genre allowed her to tackle issues beyond those of the literary as it is narrowly defined: for instance, she wrote a number of important essays on evangelism and religion (“Evangelical Teaching: Dr. Cumming,” 1855), women’s rights (“Woman in France,” 1854; “Margaret Fuller and Mary Wollstonecraft,” 1855), and philosophy (“R.W.Mackay’s Progress of the Intellect,” 1851; “The Future of German Philosophy,” 1855).
Eliot returned to the essay form in 1865 when she was invited to contribute some pieces to the Pall Mall Gazette and the Fortnightly Review. These include a short piece on the importance of German philosophical culture, “A Word for the Germans,” and an essay on “The Logic of Servants,” an explanation of why the franchise should not be extended to the servant class, exposing her socially conservative political views. In 1868, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, the journal which had published most of her fiction, invited her to write an essay on the 1867 Reform Bill in the persona of Felix Holt, the hero of her hugely successful novel of the previous year. An essay steeped in organic metaphors, the “Address to Working Men, by Felix Holt” advises the newly enfranchised class of the gravity of their responsibility, and is a clear statement of the conservatism of her beliefs.
