The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead: Writing Through Death Into Life A Workshop in Creative Writing as part of the Spiritual Autobiography
with Normandi Ellis
Ancient Egyptian scribes saw writing the Book of the Dead as the epitome of spiritual practice. Its prayers for divine grace, life evaluation, maps of inner worlds and transformations mark an ancient quest for self-becoming. In this 90-minute workshop we will map our own inner worlds, transformations and movement toward Spirit.

Bast (Kemetic/Egyptian)
Eye of Ra, Lady of the Ointments, Knowledge through which death cannot approach too closely, Protector, Avenger, Devouring Lady
Where to start about Bast? Well, as everyone knows She is a cat-headed Goddess. Cats were sacred to Her, and therefore to the Egyptians who worshipped Her. She had a cult centre in Bubastis, a place today known as Tell-Basta, north of Giza and on the East side of the Nile delta Bast is the Eye of Ra, an avenger and justice-bringer. She was not originally (or ever, really) a "fluffy, sex kitten Goddess." Bast is usually depicted as a cat-headed (vs lion headed, as Sekhmet is) woman, though She is sometimes shown as a full cat. She is, in some ways, also a Goddess of pleasure, as dancing, fertility and bounty fall under Her domain in the later eras. In an odd contradiction, She is both the Goddess of the Rising Sun/East *and* of the Moon. CatGuy, an online source, mentioned the different festivals of Bast, as yet unconfirmed by other sources:

AN INTERVIEW WITH NORMANDI ELLIS Normandi Ellis is the author of Awakening Osiris, her haunting translation of The Egyptian Book of the Dead. She has also written a collection of short stories, Sorrowful Mysteries, Desperate Measures, a play produced by the University of Kentucky Women Writers' Conference, and, most recently, Voice Forms, a collection of prose poetry, and Feasts of Light: Celebrations for the Seasons of Life Based on the Egyptian Goddess Festival Calendar. She conducts workshops on creative writing and the ancient Egyptian concept of spiritual bodies. Ellis also teaches creative writing in middle schools, high schools, and elementary schools as an Artist in Residence in the State of Kentucky. How did you become interested in ancient Egypt in the first place, and what led you to translate The Egyptian Book of the Dead? Since there are no accidents, I've come to think of it as ancient Egypt becoming interested in me. Why I'm not sure. What happened is that I had a friend who had been studying with the Rosicrucians, and I had not seen this fellow for several years, though we had grown up down the street from each other. In the meantime, the Vietnam War had happened, and he had been drafted. His father was a doctor and had gotten him into a medic unit, but when he found out he was going to go, he got a call from a man somewhere in Ohio who was a Rosicrucian, who said, "I understand you're going to be a medic in Vietnam and you'll be assisting souls in transition, so I'm going to teach you what I know." So he went and studied with this man.

The Recurring World Tree in European Paganism
article
by Mark Dalton
It was one of those spring days... I was 19 years old, and I was sitting by myself with my back against a magnificent, 80-foot-tall, 100-year-old oak tree on the grounds of Love Library at the University of Nebraska. The sky was a bright, vibrant blue, with fluffy white clouds drifting by above the towering trees overhead. It had been a long, cold winter, but today I was dappled in warm, golden sunshine, and there I sat, delighted and transfixed, while nature spirits danced and played through the trees, sighing with pleasure as they brushed across the grass, spun around the corners of the massive old library and whispered through the delicate new leaves in the branches far above me. Trees have been an important part of pagan worship and magical workings since our distant ancestors began leaving evidence of possessing a spiritual consciousness. As Ralph Metzner, a professor of psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, notes, the two most widespread world images in the archaic imagination were the mother goddess and the "world tree." Along with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (now known as Ram Dass), Metzner was an early pioneer in the study of non-ordinary states of consciousness. He has written several important books on Western consciousness and spirituality, including The Well of RemembranceRediscovering the Earth Wisdom Myths of Northern Europe
