A Clay Mathematics Institute Conference at Oxford Bernard Sunley Lecture Theatre
St. Catherine's College
Oxford University
October 7-8, 2005
A conference on Euclid and his Heritage is to be held on the occasion of the publication, for the first time, of a complete digital edition of the oldest surviving manuscript of Euclid's Elements. Written around 300 BC, this is the founding document of mathematics. The manuscript, dating from the year 888 AD, was copied by Stephen the Clerk in Constantinople, and since 1804 has been in the collection of the Bodleian Library. The digital edition was prepared by the Octavo corporation, which photographed the manuscript at the Bodleian in the fall of 2004. The conference will bring together classicists, historians, mathematicians and philosophers to provide a fresh look at Euclid's work, the transmission of Greek science from ancient to modern times, and the influence over twenty-three centuries of the Greek revolution in mathematics - the notion of proof, the systematic use of figures, and the organization of a complex and interconnected body of knowledge in the form of an axiomatic system. Abstracts of talks
Registration information
The conference is open to all, and there is no fee for attendees.. However, to facilitate planning, we ask you to fill out the online registration form below. Lunch will be served on October 7 and 8 in the elegant dining hall of St. Catherine's College, located next to the lecture hall where the conference is held. You are urged to make hotel reservations early in order receive a favorable rate. Two options for hotel accomodations are given below.

89. NonEuclid - Hyperbolic Geometry Article & Applet
Software simulation offering straightedge and compass constructions in hyperbolic geometry.
http://cs.unm.edu/~joel/NonEuclid/NonEuclid.html
NonEuclid is Interactive Java Software
for Creating Ruler and Compass Constructions
of Hyperbolic Geometry.
NonEuclid allows the curious explorer to gain experience in Hyperbolic Geometry and to empirically investigate questions such as: "In Hyperbolic Geometry, are the base angles of an isosceles triangle congruent?" The NonEuclid software and documentation are accessible to anyone with high school level geometry. Aside from being interesting in itself, a study of Hyperbolic geometry can, through its novelty, enable a deeper understanding of a formal proof. Hyperbolic Geometry also has practical aspects such as orbit prediction of objects within intense gradational fields. Hyperbolic Geometry is used in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and Curved Hyperspace. Authors:

91. Diogenes Laertius Lives Of The Philosophers: Euclides, Translated By C.D. Yonge

Lives index THE LIVES AND OPINIONS OF EMINENT PHILOSOPHERS
BY DIOGENES LAERTIUS, TRANSLATED BY C.D. YONGE
LIFE OF EUCLIDES
I. EUCLIDES was a native of Megara on the Isthmus, or of Gela, according to some writers, whose statement is mentioned by Alexander in his Successions. He devoted himself to the study of the writings of Parmenides; and his successors were called the philosophers of the Megaric school; after that they were called the Contentious school, and still later, the Dialecticians, which name was first given to them by Dionysius the Carthaginian; because they carried on their investigations by question and answer. Hermodorus says that after the death of Socrates, Plato and the other philosophers came to Euclides, because they feared the cruelty of the tyrants. II. He used to teach that the chief good is unity; but that it is known by several names; for at one time people call it prudence; at another time God; at another time intellect, and so on. But everything which was contrary to good, he discarded, denying its existence. And the proofs which he used to bring forward to support his arguments, were not those which proceed on assumptions, but on conclusions. He also rejected all that sort of reasoning which proceeds on comparison, saying that it must be founded either on things which are like, or on things which are unlike. If on things which are like, then it is better to reason about the things themselves, than about those which resemble them; and if on things which are unlike, then the comparison is quite useless. And on this account Timon uses the following language concerning him, where he also attacks all the other philosophers of the Socratic school:

A GSP Sketch
The GLaD Construction Revised
A revised presentation of the GLaD construction results from using the line segment AM as the diagonal of the rectangle, resulting in the following figure and the corresponding simplification of the presentation. This change was mentioned on the GLaD Web Page.
A GSP Sketch
A Slightly Different Development
A modification of the GLaD construction is suggested by the idea that the interior point leading to P3 is the centroid of a triangle where MB and and AD are extended to meet at X. It is not necessary to keep a right angle at A. The following figure results
Construction

A proof follws readily at each stage considering the similar triangles and the ratio of similarity in each case. All this is very similar to "moving M to C." It presents a single sequence for all cases rather than separate ones for odd and even segmentations.

Unto Heinonen Probleemblad, March-April 2001 SPG in 26 moves Paris - It is reported that the above problem, by the distinguished Finnish composer Unto Heinonen has been computer tested on Thursday May third in less than 10 minutes. This surprising performance, altough executed on a powerful PC running Windows 98 at 1.3Ghz under 128Mb of memory is reportedly the feat of a new software. Reliable sources have been able to give us a few supplementary facts about the program. Titled Euclide , from the alleged Greek author of , an outstanding treatise of geometry displaying great deduction skills from its author(s), the program is currently available in b eta version somewhere on Internet. The author, whose name is yet unknown, seems to be interested only in the underlying algorithm since we have been told that the program is not much flexible in terms of memory usage and options. Rumors talk of a hefty 56Mb of memory! One of our source even discredits the author for he perceived the user interface as a mere revamp of Natch 's one.
