Submit articles free The Free Library ... Literature Henry Fielding Henry Fielding was born at Sharpham Park, Somerset. He was by birth a gentleman, closely allied to the aristocracy. Fielding grew up on his parents' farm at East Stour, Dorset. His mother died when Fielding was eleven, and when his father remarried, Henry was sent to Eton. He studied at Eton College (1719-1724), where he learned to love ancient Greek and Roman literature. Encouraged by his cousin, Lady Mary Worley Montague, Fielding started his career as a writer in London. In 1728 he wrote two plays, of which Love in Several Masques was successfully performed at Drury Lane. In the same year he went to the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, enlarging his knowledge of classical literature. After returning to England, he devoted himself to writing for the stage. Fielding also became a manager of the Little Theatre in the Haymarket. In 1730 he had four plays produced, among them Tom Thumb , which is his most famous and popular drama. According to a story, it made Swift laugh for the second time in his life. In 1736 Fielding took over the management of the New Theatre, writing for it among others the satirical comedy

Henry Fielding, best known as the author of the comic novel The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749), wrote poetry, plays, satires, and fiction, as well as moral and political essays and legal tracts. Fielding was always conscious of his genteel birth and breeding: his father (the nephew of an earl) ultimately achieved the rank of Lieutenant General of the Army; Fielding’s maternal grandfather was a judge of the Queen’s Bench. Educated at Eton College (1719-24) and the University of Leiden (1728-29), Fielding was proud of the classical education that distinguished him from most of the hack writers with whom the extravagance of his appetites and the narrowness of his fortune forced him to associate. Fielding enjoyed a successful early career as a dramatist in London, writing comedies, satires, farces, and burlesques (including The Tragedy of Tragedies: or the Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great ) until a series of politically daring plays (including Fielding’s own The Historical Register for the Year 1736 ) led to the 1737 Licensing Act, which (in effect) banned Fielding from the stage. He turned to the law and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1740. He practiced law on and off during the 1740s, while continuing his career as a writer, and was ultimately appointed a magistrate for the London counties of Westminster (1748) and Middlesex (1749). Fielding administered justice from his home in Bow Street (establishing his “Bow Street Runners” as London’s first modern police force) until 1754, when he traveled to Portugal for health reasons, died, and was buried there.

His novels and plays criticizing the government of the time (as well as rival authors) often struck a discordant note with contemporary leaders, especially Sir Robert Wapole. Despite this, he later became London's Chief Magistrate. While his literary work scandalized many, his role in the development of the novel as a major art form is signification. He helped to develop the form from the epistolary works of Samuel Richardson in to one with more diverse characters, helping to pave the way for the psychological realism that would come after him.

His father was General Edmund F., descended from the Earls of Denbigh and Desmond, and his mother was the dau. of Sir Henry Gould of Sharpham Park. His childhood was spent at East Stour, Dorset, and his education was received at first from a tutor, after which he was sent to Eton. Following a love affair with a young heiress at Lyme Regis he was sent to Leyden to study law, where he remained until his f. , who had entered into a second marriage, and who was an extravagant man, ceased to send his allowance. Thrown upon his own resources, he came to London and began to write light comedies and farces, of which during the next few years he threw off nearly a score. The drama, however, was not his true vein, and none of his pieces in this kind have survived, unless Tom Thumb , a burlesque upon his contemporary playwrights, be excepted. About 1735 he m. Miss Charlotte Cradock, a beautiful and amiable girl to whom, though he gave her sufficient cause for forbearance, he was devotedly attached. She is the prototype of his "Amelia" and "Sophia." She brought him �1500, and the young couple retired to East Stour, where he had a small house inherited from his mother. The little fortune was, however, soon dissipated; and in a year he was back in London, where he formed a company of comedians, and managed a small theatre in the Haymarket.
