21. Interview | Timothy Findley
I don't believe in theory. I don't talk about it. Nothing is ever plotted along the lines of any given theory because that would kill the writing.

s Buy it online Read January Magazine 's final tribute to Timothy Findley as well as our last interview. Read a review of Pilgrim by Timothy Findley "I don't believe in theory. I don't talk about it. Nothing is ever plotted along the lines of any given theory because that would kill the writing. Then you're writing for another reason. And you have to force your storyline and force your characters into a mold. And why do that? You've killed half the impetus of what writing is about. Which is about exploring. Exploration. You're exploring the people you write and they develop under your hand and become whole." The first time I interviewed Timothy Findley was in 1995 while he was promoting his splendid novel, The Piano Man's Daughter . Findley took the opportunity to introduce me to a lovely white Zinfandel. A Californian. As crisp as the late summer day was hot and so lovely on the palate, it melted: if a wine can be said to melt.
At our most recent meeting, Findley introduced me to another lovely wine. We were in the lounge of the Hotel Vancouver (the last bastion of civilized smoking in that city. And Findley did rather a lot of that.) and he pressed a glass of an astonishing Australian red on me from his own decanter. "Wolf Blass," he intoned as only Findley can intone. "Don't forget to ask for 'Yellow Label'."
Never mind that he was in a strange city in the midst of a cross-country tour promoting his new book

Findley, Timothy (1930-2002) page: Findley's passing occasioned mourning across Canada. Of his literary legacy, publisher Iris Tupholme said, "His superb storytelling, unforgettable characters, deep empathy for the dispossessed, and his ultimate joy in life meant that his works reached many readers, both young and old, here and around the world." Findley was remembered not just as a fine writer but also as a fine man: his kindness and generosity were mentioned repeatedly in tributes to him. Book Review
Timothy Findley's Pilgrim is the story of a man who can't die even though he tries over and over to kill himself. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, in 1912 he's placed in a Zurich clinic where Carl Gustav Jung is hard as work trying to determine the perimeter of the collective unconscious. For Jung, this man becomes an embodiment of the psyche's mystery. Claiming to have no past history but to have simply arrived one day at consciousness, Pilgrim lives in a limbo outside individuality and subjectivity. He's everyone and no one. Is he a messenger? Or is he a basket case? As the novel gathers momentum, we realize that Pilgrim is a character much like Virginia Woolf's Orlando, traversing gender and time, a witness. But whereas Woolf is a feverish and emotional writer, Findley is philosophical and dry, playful and slightly... Spadework
Timothy Findley Jan 2003 Paperback From Publishers Weekly Bestselling Canadian writer Findley, whose stylish and complexly plotted novels have acquired an appreciative audience, here departs from his usual dark scenarios to produce an erotically powered narrative in which all's well that ends well. The setting is the town of Stratford, Ontario, home of the Shakespeare Festival. Findley (Pilgrim) knows this world well, and he conveys it with atmospheric detail. The inadequacy of mere ambition, even when one has talent, is the lesson learned by rising actor Griffin Kincaid, when he realizes that luck and fate can also play havoc with dreams of theatrical stardom. After Kincaid refuses a sexual proposition by his manipulative homosexual director, Jonathan Crawford, he is denied the roles he'd been promised. Griffin's wife, Jane, a Louisiana set designer for the theater, is...

Timothy Findley was severely embarrassed
one morning when someone found him sniffing rocks and seaweed on a beach in British Columbia. He was searching for authenticity, this time trying to experience what an animal might sense for his novel Not Wanted on the Voyage , a mythical story of the occupants of Noah’s ark. Findley, “Tiff” to his many friends, was one of Canada's most celebrated writers, earning international acclaim as a master storyteller. Among his memorable works: The Wars, Famous Last Words, The Piano Man's Daughter, The Telling of Lies, Pilgrim and the play Elizabeth Rex. His most recent novel, Spadework , appeared in the fall of 2001.
