French novelist best known for "Madame Bovary," which ranks as one of the world's greatest novels. A cheerless pessimist, he worked tirelessly to create an exact and realistic style; it took him years to perfect a novel. The son of a prominent doctor in Rouen, Flaubert was sent to Paris to study law between 1840 and 1843. He had an illness which left him incapacitated, presumably a type of epilepsy. His protective mother spent her entire life catering to his every whim, anticipating his financial needs before he even expressed them. Flaubert was fond of the financial and physical security of his family home and eventually returned there to spend the rest of his life writing. Daily life in his mother's house was conducted in hushed whispers until he awoke close to noon. Mme. Flaubert then rushed to his bedside for a long chat, after which he arose, ate a huge lunch and spent the afternoon getting ready to work on his writing until far into the night. Flaubert spent a lifetime torn between the crude appetites of the flesh and the seraphic aspirations of the soul, between the gutter and the radiant heavens, between the reality and the dream. He attended prostitutes and mistresses to satisfy his carnal desires, most notably poet Louise Colet, a twice-awarded winner of the prestigious poetry prize by the Academie Francaise. They met in 1846 and she published her account of their relationship in "Lui," 1859. When he could no longer resist the pleas of his mistress, he would go to Paris for several weeks of hyper sexuality until he felt the need to return to "Poor old darling," which he called his mother.

Gustave Flaubert
Gustave Flaubert was born into a family of doctors in Rouen. His father, Achille-Cléophas Flaubert, was a chief surgeon at the Rouen municipal hospital, who made his money investing in land. Flaubert's mother, Anne-Justine-Caroline (née Fleuriot), was the daughter of a physician, and she became the most important person in his life. Early on, Flaubert found this bourgeois background burdensome. His rebellion against it led to his expulsion from school, and Flaubert completed his education privately in Paris. Flaubert started to write during his school years. A disappointment in his teens - Flaubert fell in love with Elisa Schlésinger, who was married and some ten years his senior - inspired much of his early writing. In the 1840's Flaubert studied law at Paris, a brief episode in his life, and in 1844 he had a nervous attack. "I was cowardly in my youth," Flaubert wrote once to George Sand. "I was afraid of life." He was recognized as suffering from a nervous disease, although it could have been epilepsy. However, the diagnosis changed Flaubert's life. He failed his law exams and decided to devote himself to literature. In this he was helped by his father who bought him a house at Croisset, on the River Seine between Paris and Rouen. In 1846 Flaubert met the writer Louise Colet. They corresponded regularly and she became Flaubert's mistress, although they met infrequently. In

Flaubert, Gustave Biography
Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) French novelist of the realist school, best-known for MADAME BOVARY (1857), a story of adultery and unhappy love affair of the provincial wife Emma Bovary. As a writer Flaubert was a perfectionist, who did not make a distinction between a beautiful or ugly subject: all was in the style. "The Idea," he wrote, "exists only by virtue of its form" - its elements included the perfect word, cunningly contrived and verified rhythms, and a genuine architectural structure. "Has it ever happened to you," Leon went on, "to come across some vague idea of one's own in a book, some dim image that comes back to you from afar, and as the completest expression of your own slightest sentiment?"
"I have experienced it," she replied.
"That is why," he said, "I especially love the poets. I think verse more tender than prose, and that it moves far more easily to tears."
(from Madame Bovary In 1846 Flaubert met the writer Louise Colet. They corresponded regularly and she became Flaubert's mistress although they met infrequently. Colet gave in Lui (1859) her account of their relationship. After the death of both his father and his married sister, Flaubert moved at Croisset, the family's country home near Rouen. Until he was 50 years old, Flaubert lived with his mother. The household also included his niece Caroline. His maxim was: "Be regular and orderly in your life like a bourgeois, so that you may be violent and original in your work."

Flaubert wurde am 12. Dezember 1821 in Rouen geboren.

Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880), French novelist of the realist period, is known best for his sensational Madame Bovary (1857), a classic tale of romance and retribution. It is a portrait of the young provincial Emma Bovary as fallen woman and her adulterous liaisons with Rodolphe Boulanger. (It was criticised then banned for a period after its first release). Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen, France on 12 December 1821, the fifth of six children in a family of doctors. His father, Achille-Clophas Flaubert, was chief surgeon in Rouen. (He died in 1846). Flaubert's mother, Anne Justine Caroline (ne Fleuriot), was the daughter of a physician, and was to become one of the most influential people in his life and works. (She died in 1872). In the 1830s Flaubert attended the Collge Royal de Rouen, writing for its newspaper, reading Shakespeare, travelling extensively and at the age of fourteen began in earnest his own writings, inspired by his unconsummated love affair at this time with the much older and married Elisa Schlsinger.

Gustave Flaubert Gustave Flaubert (December 12, 1821 – May 8, 1880) was a French novelist who, with near contemporaries Stendhal and Honore de Balzac , is credited with the development of literary realism . Decades before Henry James Charles Dickens or Anthony Trollope , whose prolific, often melodramatic, plot-driven novels were serialized for publication and composed under deadline constraints. Flaubert's best-known and influential novel, Madame Bovary, explored the provincial life of the bored and adulterous Emma Bovary, realistically rendering her relationships and psychology without projecting moral judgment. Presenting Emma as a stifled and repressed romantic, Flaubert poured scorn on the banality of bourgeois conventions. The subject matter and realistic treatment outraged French society and Flaubert was brought up (and acquitted) on charges of obscenity. The never-married Flaubert was notorious for his prodigious appetite for prostitutes and often expressed misogynist attitudes toward women. His disdain for women as moral, emotional, and intellectual beings provided a precedent for misogynistic treatment of women in Western literature. Flaubert's aesthetic ideals influenced the development of the novel in Europe
