Fleming, Ian
    Casino Royale
Martin Campbell's telling of Ian Flemming's Casino Royale is brilliant. Casino , the first of the Bond stories, shows us how Bond becomes a double O. 007's story is revealed in layers, with the unrefined character played precisely by Daniel Craig, who is seen through most of the movie covered in cuts and scabs. Craig is infinitely more believable to me as a killer than the prettier Bonds. He's not the perfect, dapper gentleman of Bonds past. He's real and human, and that's why he comes off well. You get the sense that he's both vulnerable yet edgy like a crude diamond waiting to be cut and polished. By the end, you see him transformed into the ruthless spy with a sophisticated facade that is genuinely Bond. The stunning Eva Green, who you might have seen in Bertolucci's Dreamers is easily the best Bond girl to grace a Fleming title. It's mesmerizing to watch this French actress onscreen and she delivers what many Bond girls of the past have lacked depth. She helps to give meaning to the spy with a license to kill who we are expected to follow through the series of stories to come. We understand after this film what shaped Bond's character and what makes killing in cold blood come easily to him. There's a lot to like about this Bond. The action is delivered sparingly but executed intelligently. One thing I liked was the emphasis on the physical stunts. The opening scene is a Parkour chase that's less beautiful than we see usually in

Home Celebrities : The Name's Fleming - Ian Fleming Contact! Ian Fleming was the creator of James Bond - he wrote twelve James Bond novels between 1952 and 1964. The movies have been produced since 1962. Bond's world was based on Fleming's own experiences in World War II. Fleming was plucked out of newspaper work to join British Naval Intelligence in 1939, when Churchill was still the First Lord of the Admiralty in Chamberlain's government. He became an aide to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiral John Godfrey, and was known as "17F". He was trained at Intrepid's "Camp X", on Lake Ontario in Canada, where he became practised at underwater demolition. He rose to the rank of Commander. With Godfrey, he met J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI, in 1941, and had some influence in the establishment of the OSS, the forerunner of the CIA. Read more about Intrepid on The Gremlins page on this site.

Ian (Lancaster) Fleming (1908-1964) pseudonym Atticus British journalist, secret service agent, writer, whose famous creation was the superhero James Bond, agent 007. Fleming spent some years with British Intelligence, but his books are far from reality they offer colorful locations, beautiful women, and exciting and inventive adventures. Nowadays the character of James Bond is as integral part of the popular culture as Winnie-the-Pooh or Tarzan. "It was a dark, clean-cut face, with a three-inch scar showing whitely down the sunburned skin of the right cheek. The eyes were wide and level under straight, rather long black brows. The hair was black, parted on the left, and carelessly brushed so that a thick black comma fell down over the right eyebrow. The longish straight nose ran down to a short upper lip below which was a wide and finely drawn but cruel mouth. The line of jaw was straight and firm. A section of dark suit, white short and black knitted tie completed the picture." (James Bond in Casino Royale Ian Fleming was born in London, the son of Major Valentine Fleming, a Conservative M.P., who was killed in World War I, and Evelyn St. Croix Fleming. Ian was the second of four boys. Like his father and elder brother before him, he was educated at Eton, where he excelled in the difficult steeple chase contest. His first story, 'The Ordeal of Caryl St. George', was published in the college magazine. From Eton he was expelled following "some alleged trouble with one of the boys' maids".

He is also the author of The James Bond Encyclopedia Ian Fleming lived a remarkably uncompromising life in a world full of compromises. To sum up his life in the short space available would be an impossible task even for the most efficient writer, so all that follows is a simple pastiche. Further reading is highly recommended.
    Family Background
Born in 1908 as the son of Valentine Fleming, and the grandson of the wealthy Scottish banker Robert Fleming, Ian Lancaster Fleming grew up the member of a rare class of Englishmen for whom all options are open. The privilege of class and respect came not merely from his grandfather's money, as wealth alone in England does not guarantee open doors. The Fleming family earned their social stripes with service and blood. Ian's father was a service-oriented land-owner in Oxfordshire and a member of Parliament. When Valentine Fleming died in the Great War, Ian was 8 days shy of his 9th birthday. Winston Churchill wrote the obituary for The Times.

Fleming is best remembered for creating the character of James Bond and chronicling his adventures in 12 novels and nine short stories. Additionally, Fleming wrote the children's story Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and two non-fiction books. Fleming's famous alter ego represents a modern hero who is at home in the modern world which emphasizes technological expertise over spiritual values. Set in the context of the Cold War , of good vs. evil, Bond nonetheless operates in the shadows, in the amoral mass of combat between "shadowy figures." However, that realism is overlaid with exotic locales, exotic women and the glamour of the "jet set," as Bond proves his mastery over every situation. Bond represents the desire for mastery in an increasingly complex world that has reduced the human sense of size and value.

Who 'kills' Bond? "From Russia With Love", by Ian Fleming

Rosa Klebb . This scene was supposed to be Bond's last ever appearance, as Fleming was getting bored with the idea of his successful spy, so he had Klebb kick him with the poison-tipped boots. Oddly enough, after President Kennedy had named 'From Russia With Love' as one of his favourite novels, Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman decided that would be the next movie, and Fleming revived Bond for 'Dr. No'.
In what book did Grant hide his gun, whilst on the train towards the end of the novel? "From Russia With Love", by Ian Fleming

War and Peace . This is an excellent scene in which the cigaret case soaks up the bullet, stopping it from penetrating Bond's heart. He could feel the heat of the bullet but Bond collapsed on the cabin floor pretending to be dead, then killed Grant with the knife from his attache case.

    The Man Behind James Bond
    By Andrew Lycett
    Turner, $24.95
    ISBN 1570363439
    Review by Tony Buchsbaum
His name was Fleming, Ian Fleming. And the character he created in a small house in Jamaica was a hero for all the world. Now, for the first time in 30 years, Ian Fleming is the subject of a new biography by Andrew Lycett. Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond is a detailed, intimate look behind the scenes, and behind the mask of a man who lived a life of privilege and high expectations, a life in which cars went fast-and women went faster. Fleming was the son of a stockbroker who helped raise the capital for the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad. After Valentine Fleming was killed in World War I, his sons and their mother flitted through London society. Ian learned both the spoken language and body language of the high life, and these would forever color his perspective, attitude, and actions. After brief periods as a stockbroker and reporter, Fleming was drafted into the secret service. MI5 offered him the chance to use his social graces, his intimate knowledge of liquor and women, and his fascination with cars and all things mechanical. As a spy, he made a name for himself as a man who could get things done-dangerous things. In time, he became a member of the group who created the prototype organization for the CIA. He even met with John F. Kennedy to discuss plans to embarrass Castro and generate his fall from power. Not until after his wedding, on honeymoon in Jamaica, did Fleming begin writing fiction. In
