Doch die Verlockung war zu groß gewesen. Sein Freund Kris und er, beide Wetteransager des BBC, waren von einem Bekannten nach Florida eingeladen worden. Und w2as für die meisten Touristen eine Horrorvision ist, lässt ihrer beider Augen leuchten: ein Hurrikan bewegt sich in ihre Richtung! Kris, ein passionierter Pilot, hatte immer schon davon geträumt, durch das Auge eines Hurrikans zu fliegen. Und da auch Perry, von Wetterphänomenen fasziniert, endlich aus der Theorie in die Praxis wechseln möchte, ist es nicht schwer, ihn zu überzeugen. Etwas macht Perry jedoch schon bei den Vorbereitungen stutzig: eine winzig kleine Insel soll sozusagen "im Vorbeifliegen" auch angesteuert werden. Und dieser Landeanflug soll in keinen Papieren verzeichnet werden. Perry soll fotografieren - ohne zu erfahren, was er eigentlich vor die Linse nehmen soll. Eine höchst eigenartige Konstellation - zumal, wie sie beim Anflug feststellen, die Insel bis auf eine Herde Kühe völlig verlassen scheint. Doch nun gilt es erst, den Kampf ums Überleben zu gewinnen - und danach herauszufinden, was hier eigentlich passiert ist....

Er brauche seine Hilfe, meint Malcolm. Vor kurzem war seine fünfte Frau umgebracht worden - der Grund für das Zerwürfnis zwischen Vater und Sohn. Diese Frau hätte es nur auf sein Geld abgesehen, meinte Ian damals vor der Hochzeit -und hatte daraufhin eine Ohrfeige kassiert. Seine vielen Halbgeschwister waren über das Zerwürfnis zwischen Vater und Sohn nicht unglücklich gewesen - schließlich galt er immer als dessen Liebling. Und die Befürchtung war groß, dass dieser Sonderstatus ihm den Löwenanteil des großen zu erwartenden Erbes sichern könnte. Doch schon beim ersten Treffen mit Ian gibt es einen weiteren Zwischenfall - ein Auto versucht, beide zu überfahren. Dass Malcolm nun auch noch beginnt, für unvorstellbare Summen teure Pferde zu kaufen, schreibt die Familie natürlich auf Ians Konto; wer sonst könnte derartigen Einfluss auf den Vater haben? Und da Ian seinen Lebensunterhalt als Assistent eines Trainers bestreitet und zudem Amateurrennen reitet liegt diese Schlussfolgerung für die Familie auf der Hand. Diogenes 1983 362 Seiten, ISBN: 3257227531 Ursprünglich war Peter Darwin von der Idee seines Kollegen an der britischen Botschaft, Vicky und Greg während des Fluges nach London Gesellschaft zu leisten, wenig erbaut. Ein alterndes Ehepaar, das noch dazu in Clubs auftritt - das klang nach peinlicher Konversation. Umso überraschter war er dann, als er Vicky kennen lernte. Eine jung gebliebene Dame mit Humor und einer hervorragenden Stimme - der Flug würde nicht so schrecklich sein, wie er erwartet hatte. Aber am Abend vor dem Abflug werden Greg und Vicky überfallen; ein typischer Straßenraub, der sie dennoch viele Nerven kostet. In Peter erwacht der Fürsorgeinstinkt; nicht nur während des Fluges will er sie begleiten, er beschließt, sie bis nach Newmarket zu bringen, wo Vickys Tochter lebt und bald heiraten will. Vor der zweiten Ehe seiner Mutter war auch Peter in Newmarket aufgewachsen, hatte aber keine Kontakte mehr dahin. Nur noch ein Abendessen mit Vickys Tochter Belinda und dem zukünftigen Schwiegersohn Ken, dann will er abreisen. Doch Ken wird während des Abendessens weggerufen; die Tierklinik, die er mit einigen Kollegen gemeinsam betreibt, ist abgebrannt. Das ist aber nur ein weiterer Punkt in der Serie an Unglücksfällen, die Ken in der letzten Zeit heimgesucht haben; er, der eigentlich ein hervorragender Pferdechirurg ist, musste in der letzten Zeit eine überdurchschnittlich hohe Anzahl an Tieren verzeichnen, die entweder die Operation nicht überlebten, oder aber kurz danach verstarben. Peter wird Zeuge einer Operation, die noch in dieser Nacht an einem Pferd vorgenommen werden muss; und die Souveränität, mit der Ken hier arbeitet, sein Fachwissen, wirken so überzeugend auf Peter, dass er sich nicht vorstellen kann, dass diese Unglücksfälle durch Schlamperei zustande gekommen sein könnten.

This is the first book that was actually mundane. The dialogue, usually so pithy, creaked. The well known characters basic essence, their traits, their manner of speech and habits, significantly changed from the previous Sid Halley novels. The usual manner of introducing new characters, of fleshing them and their personalities and appearances out in such a creative way that you didn't realise it was happening, has been traded in for the most basic descriptive text. The appeal that characters usually have, was entirely missing. In short, the magic was gone. Many theories have been raised over the part others may have played in Dick Francis' novels - the basic story line of this novel was the one thing that may well have been consistant with his past novels, but the clever and concise writing style that gave the story such life appears to be gone, and for one, I found this novel sorely lacking without it.

Dick Francis Overview The standard history of Dick Francis must mention that this Grand Master mystery writer officially began his sporting career after WW2 as an amateur jockey and retired in 1957 as the preferred jockey of the Queen Mum. In 1956 he came heart-breakingly close to winning the Grand National. Upon retirement at the age of 36 he turned his attention to writing, beginning as the racing correspondent for a British daily. He released his first mystery novel in 1962 and turned out about one a year for almost four decades. Our handy-dandy Reader's Encyclopedia, 3rd ed. informs me that Francis' novels, long popular in England, became so in the U.S. after a 1980 television series based on his 1965 novel Odds Against As stated above, Francis churned out novels at a one per year pace starting in 1962. However, about 3 weeks after the release of Shattered in 2000, Dick's wife Mary died of a heart attack at the couple's home in the Cayman Islands. Her death had a major impact on Dick's writing since she did a large part of the research and editing of the novels. Indeed, Dick Francis - A Racing Life , an unauthorized biography written by Graham Lord, alleged that she was the sole author. Lord has built a specialty of sorts with unauthorized biographies of British authors, with works on John Mortimer (author of the Rumpole books) and Alf Wight (aka country vet James Herriot). Fans of the authors are usually quick to condem Lord's bios with allegations of shoddy research and a muckracking agenda. In any case, no Dick Francis books came out for 6 years following Mary's death until, in September of 2006
