Anne Frank (1929-1945) Anne Frank's world famous diary charts two years of her life from 1942 to 1944, when her family were hiding in Amsterdam from German Nazis. The diary begins just before the family retreated into their 'Secret Annexe'. Anne Frank recorded mostly her hopes, frustrations, clashes with her parents, and observation of her companions. Its first version, which appeared in 1947, was edited by Anne's father, who removed certain family references and some of her highly intimate confessions. "I haven't written for a few days, because I wanted first of all to think about my diary. It's an odd idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because I have never done so before, but because it seems to me that neither I - nor for that matter anyone else - will be interested in the unbosomings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl. Still, what does that matter? I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart." (from The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank In 1944 Gestapo was informed of the flat - from 10 000 Jews, who went into hiding, some 5 000 were betrayed. SS Officer Karl Joseph Silberbauer - found in the 1960s by Simon Wiesenthal - arrested the Frank and the Van Pels families. The Franks were transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where Anne's mother died. Anne and her sister were transferred from the Dutch concentration camp, Westerbork, to Bergen-Belsen where they both died of typhus.

    Frank, Anne,
in full ANNELIES MARIE FRANK (b. June 12, 1929, Frankfurt am Maind. March 1945, Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, near Hannover, Ger.), young Jewish girl whose diary records the two years that her family spent in hiding in Amsterdam to escape the anti-Semitic persecutions of the German Nazi movement. Early in the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler, Anne Frank's father, Otto Frank (1889-1980), a German businessman, took his wife and two daughters to live in Amsterdam. In 1941, after German forces occupied The Netherlands, Anne was compelled to transfer from a public to a Jewish school. Faced with deportation (supposedly to a forced-labour camp), the Franks on July 9, 1942, went into hiding with four other Jews in the back-room office and warehouse of the father's food-products business. A few Gentile friends smuggled in their food and other supplies, and they lived confined to their secret annex until Aug. 4, 1944, when the Gestapo, acting on a tip from Dutch informers, discovered them. The family was transported to the concentration camp at Auschwitz in Poland, where Anne's mother died in 1945. Anne and her sister were transferred to Bergen-Belsen and died there of typhus. Otto Frank was found hospitalized at Auschwitz when it was liberated by Russian troops.

Brief biography written by fourth grade students Pat and Nina.
    http://www2.lhric.org/pocantico/womenenc/frank.htm
Anne Frank Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Maine, Germany on June 12, 1929. Her older sister, Margot was three years older than her. In 1933 Anne, Margot, her father (Otto Frank) and her mother (Edith Frank) moved to Amsterdam. On Anne Frank's thirteenth birthday she received a diary, she named it "Kitty" which she liked the best out of all her presents. She loved to write in "Kitty." By her thirteenth birthday Nazis were taking over Amsterdam and making anti-Jewish rules, and she was Jewish! She hated these rules. She went to a Montessori school. Then because of the anti-Jewish laws, she moved to a Jewish Lyceum where she quickly started to adjust. Then when World War II started her father, Otto Frank and some other clients where he worked created a hiding place in an annex to the office. The family moved into the hiding place as soon as possible. One day in August 1944, a little after two years of hiding, the Frank family was found and put into a concentration camp. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp of typhus and so did her sister Margot. Her mother died of starvation and her father was the only one (out of that family) who survived. Anne Frank is remembered in many ways. There have been books written about her, and plays and movies to tell her story. While she was hiding she kept her diary because she wanted to be educated. Her father Otto kept her diary and two years after she died, in 1947, her father published it unchanged. In 1959, a movie was filmed about her diary. In her short life she was able to writing short stories and some short fables. She is remembered most for her diary that has been published in over 30 languages. Many children all over America read the "Diary of Anne Frank" in school.
