Robert Frost Stone House Museum i n So. Shaftsbury, Vermont
A literary landmark, only minutes away from Frost's gravesite in Bennington, was opened in 2002 to honor America's favorite poet. Frost lived in the Stone House in South Shaftsbury, Vermont from 1920 to 1929. Here, Frost composed many of the pieces that became part of his first Pulitzer Prize winning volume New Hampshire, published in 1923, including "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening."
Built c. 1769, the house was considered historic before the Frost period. It is a rare example of colonial architecture made of native stone and timber. It has changed little since Frost's time and remains in excellent condition. The house sits on 7 acres and features many Frostian associations including stone walls, birch trees, a timbered barn and some of Frost's original apple trees. Many poignant episodes in Frost's life happened in this house.
    Exhibits
The exhibits are educational and literary covering Frost's life and art. They are designed to make you feel as if you met him. The current exhibit, entitled, "Robert Frost: The Poetry of Trees," explors the many uses of tree imagery that gather into a potent symbol over the course of Frost's poetry. Historic trees on the property, apple and red pine, are being prepared to make crafted items for our shop.

Poets and Poetry, Robert Frost Robert Frost, 1874-1963. Frost, an American poet whose deceptively simple works, often set in rural New England, explore the relationships between individuals and between people and nature. Frost's poetry is structured within traditional metrical and rhythmical schemes; he disliked free verse. Although he concentrates on ordinary subject matter, Frost's emotional range is wide and deep, and his poems often shift dramatically from a tone of humorous banter to the passionate expression of tragic experience. Frost regarded nature as a beautiful but dangerous force, worthy of admiration but nonetheless fraught with peril. His work shows his strong sympathy for the values of early American society.

A U G U S T 1 9 1 5 by Edward Garnett A SHORT time ago I found on a London bookstall an odd number of The Poetry Review, liaisons North of Boston, by Robert Frost. I read it, and reread it. It seemed to me that this poet was destined to take a permanent place in American literature. I asked myself why this book was issued by an English and not by an American publisher. And to this question I have found no answer. I may add here, in parenthesis, that I know nothing of Mr. Robert Frost save the three or four particulars I gleaned from the English friend who sent me North of Boston. From Atlantic Unbound

In an illuminating paper on recent American fiction which I hope by and by, with the editor's permission, to discuss along with Mr. Owen Wister's smashing onslaught in the Atlantic Monthly, Mr. W. D. Howell's remarks, "By test of the native touch we should not find genuine some of the American writers whom Mr. Garnett accounts so." No doubt Mr. Howells's stricture is just, and certain American novelists whom he does not however particularize have been too affected in spirit by European models. Indeed Frank Norris's early work, Vandover and the Brute

North of Boston Robert Frost (1874-1963)
American poet who was much admired for his depictions of the rural life of New England, his command of American colloquial speech, and his realistic verse portraying ordinary people in everyday situations.
Frost's father, William Prescott Frost, Jr., was a journalist with ambitions of establishing a career in California, and in 1873 he and his wife moved to San Francisco. Her husband's untimely death from tuberculosis in 1885 prompted Isabelle Moodie Frost to take her two children, Robert and Jeanie, to Lawrence, Mass., where they were taken in by the children's paternal grandparents. While their mother taught at a variety of schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, Robert and Jeanie grew up in Lawrence, and Robert graduated from high school in 1892. A top student in his class, he shared valedictorian honours with Elinor White, with whom he had already fallen in love.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.
