Archetypal Criticism: Theory of Myths
For some reason the traditions of both practice and theory in Western painting have weighed down heavily on the imitative or representational end.... [tendency to mirror-like trompe l'oeil reflections of human imagery in the Classical, Renaissance development of perspective to suggest 3 dimensions in a two-dimensional medium, and the strength and persistence of the feeling that to achieve recognizable likeness in a subject, and to make this likeness the primary thing in his picture is a moral obligation on the painter - as we eavesdrop in a modern art gallery . . . . ] p. 131 Music affords a refreshing contrast to painting in its critical theory. When perspective was discovered in painting, music might well have gone in a similar direction, but in fact the development of representational or "program" music has been severely restricted. Listeners may still derive pleasure from hearing external sounds cleverly imitated in music, but no one asserts that a composer is being a decadent or a charlatan if he fails to produce such imitations. Nor is it believed that these imitations are prior in importance to the forms of music itself, still less that they constitute those forms. The result is that the structural principles of music are clearly understood, and can be taught even to children.

Description
Striking out at the conception of criticism as restricted to mere opinion or ritual gesture, Northrop Frye wrote this magisterial work proceeding on the assumption that criticism is a structure of thought and knowledge in its own right. In four brilliant essays on historical, ethical, archetypical, and rhetorical criticism, employing examples of world literature from ancient times to the present, Frye reconceived literary criticism as a total history rather than a linear progression through time. Literature, Frye wrote, is "the place where our imaginations find the ideal that they try to pass on to belief and action, where they find the vision which is the source of both the dignity and the joy of life." And the critical study of literature provides a basic way "to produce, out of the society we have to live in, a vision of the society we want to live in."

Frye, Northrop
Canadian, 1912–1991
Almost all of Northrop Frye’s writings are essays in the broad sense of the word. He termed his first book, Fearful Symmetry (1947), an “extended critical essay in the Swinburne tradition.” Anatomy of Criticism (1957) is subtitled “Four Essays.” Most of his earlier short pieces are reviews, and most of his mature writings began as public lectures; but in all of these the essential features of the essay prevail. His recurrent concern is the relation of his immediate subject to the conception of literature collectively as a meaningful whole, unified by an organizing mythology and by recurrent patterns of imagery and narrative. Roughly half of his books are groupings of essays on a common author or theme; most of the others are collected reprints from his 350-odd journal articles.
Frye’s essays return repeatedly to several favored topics: critical studies of Blake, Shakespeare, Milton, Yeats, T.S.Eliot, and Stevens; educational themes, such as examination of the purpose of studying literature, a theory of education based on the conception of the primacy of the Bible and of Greek mythology in the teaching of Western literature, and the nature and function of the university; social themes, especially the function of the study of literature as educating the imagination and thus as the quintessential tool for understanding and survival in society.

SUMMARY This volume, the twenty-second in the acclaimed Collected Works of Northrop Frye series, presents Frye's most influential work, Anatomy of Criticism (1957). In four stylish and sweeping essays, Frye attempts to formulate an overall view of the scope, principles, and techniques of literary criticism and the conventions of literature - its modes, symbols, archetypes, and genres. He makes the case for criticism as a legitimate and structured science, a science that he would go on to wield with great influence over the course of his distinguished career. Robert D. Denham's introduction to this edition examines the book's genesis, its initial reception, and its relation to Frye's other works, particularly Fearful Symmetry (Volume 14 in the series). He highlights the diagrammatic way of thinking that characterizes Frye's brand of structuralism and explores the meaning of the word 'anatomy.' Denham also provides context for the work, considering the critical tradition out of which it emerged, as well as how it relates to some of the movements that appeared after the waning of structuralism. A key volume in the Collected Works series, this annotated and expertly introduced edition of Anatomy of Criticism will be sure to satisfy Frye's many admirers.

He was also a visiting professor in many American universities. In 1947 he published Fearful Symmetry: A Study of William Blake, which was a sweeping and erudite study of Blake's visionary symbolism. In Anatomy of Criticism (1957), he analyzed various modes of literary criticism and stressed the recurring importance of archetypal symbols in literature. In later works Frye studied T.S. Eliot (1963), John Milton's epics (1965), Shakespearean comedy (1965) and tragedy (1967), and English Romanticism (1968).
