A young girl, Sophie, becomes embroiled in a discussion of philosophy with a faceless correspondent. At the same time, she must unravel a mystery involving another young girl, Hilde, by using everything she's learning. The truth is far more complicated than she could ever have imagined. Book Description This elegant CD-ROM will take you on an interactive journey through the history of Western philosophy, from its beginnings in ancient astronomy and myth up to twentieth-century existentialism. The philosophical adventure is built around a series of exchanges between a naturally curious young girl and her anonymous teacher, in which the user must participate. The pedagogical value of this interaction is complimented by the CD-ROM's Reference Band, a philosophical map providing eight film summaries of particular historical epochs and 28 text summaries of the work of major philosophers. The CD-ROM is available on its own, or can be combined with the #1 international bestselling novel, Sophie's World, by Jostein Gaarderan excellent and affordable combination for introductory classes.

Gaarder, Jostein : Sjakk matt Checkmate - Riddles, Fairytales and Stories
"In the autumn of 2005 I was contacted by my publisher who asked me if I would like to put together a cross section of my authorship to mark the occasion that in 2006 twenty years have passed since I made my debut as a fiction writer. At first I was hesitant. The task seemed both pompous and daunting. But then I became more excited and found myself thinking that perhaps there is something here that I can present again, something I can put into an entirely new context. One criterion in particular has been crucial to the selection: All 64 texts in this collection had to be readable as independent pieces, regardless of the context from which they were taken. It is, as we know, not easy to extract a single paragraph from a novel, but people at the publishing house argued that when it came to large parts of my authorship, doing just so might indeed be possible. In retrospect I agree. My books are often composed of a number of more or less independent elements - riddles, fairytales and stories - and often consist of one layer upon another.

    12. Review Of Sophie's World, By Jostein Gaarder (Richard Gehr)
    Review on the 1991 release.
    http://www.levity.com/rubric/sophie.html
Rubrics and Tendrils of Richard Gehr 5 October 1994 Sophie's World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy By Jostein Gaarder Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $19 It's tempting to get all warm and gloopy over this well-intentioned response by a Norwegian writer and former philosophy teacher to the New Age "pornography" he fears may replace the Western philosophical canon. Sophie's World has rapidly become an international literary phenom. A genre-crossing European best-seller (file under fiction, philosophy, and young adulthood) with nearly a million copies sold to date, Jostein Gaarder's novel, at 400 pages, is a concise, clearly written corrective to philosophic obscurantism. The foil for Gaarder's pedagogic fantasy is Sophie Amundsen, a spunky 14-year-old whose philosophic journey begins when a pair of timeless ontological posers"Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" appear mysteriously in her mailbox. A follow-up envelope containing typewritten pages titled "What Is Philosophy?" (11) orient her on a correspondence course in the history of philosophy that eventually turns into a Socratic tutorial. Sophie's enthusiasm shocks her mother, who attributes her newfound interest in the mysteries of life to the influence of drugs. Nothing could be further from the truth (at least until the Kierkegaard chapter, when things do get a trifle psychedelic). Although Sophie's tutor, Alberto Knox, grounds the philosopher's project in maintaining a sense of wonder, his disquisition is clean and sober indeed. What keeps the novel moving are the tricks Gaarder plays with what we used to call the old r. and i.reality and illusion. Sophie begins receiving postcards addressed from a United Nations observer in Lebanon to his own 15-year-old daughter, Hilde. As Sophie gradually becomes aware of her existence within a book (within a book (within a book)), the philosophical question gradually take on an existential tinge, embracing problems of determinacy and free will. While not nearly as highfalutin as such would-be popularizers as Umberto Eco, Susan Sontag, or Stephen Hawkins, it's loads of fun in a cool, Scandinavian Alice-in-Wonderland fashion.

Welcome to this site about the best-selling book "Sophie's World" (Sofies verden) by Jostein Gaarder. If you have read this introduction before, you may recall that the author wishes to remain anonymous. Well, being both the web master and the author's son, I can now bring a little more light into the affair. My father unexpectedly passed away in April 2003, and while in respect to him I won't reveal who he was, I can still tell you a bit more. He was really fascinated with "Sophie's World", and - being retired - he spent a good amount of time reading what other people had to say about his site. Since he didn't have Internet access at home, he went to a public Internet cafe at least twice a week and wrote down the page hits. I saw this when I went through the agendas he had left behind. Every time another 10,000 hits were reached, he proudly wrote down the number in red ink. Actually, we were going to celebrate the 100,000 hits in summer 2003, but sadly, he died before. His ideas and mine regarding the site were a bit different. He was mainly interested in people discussing his commentary - unfortunately, I feel this hasn't yet taken off. My idea was to create a community where people could discuss the book, and I think that in this respect we were successful. So, while reading the site (or the book), please share a thought for the man who started this site and keep it alive, as my father's legacy and of course as a service to all readers of "Sophie's World".

Book Summary of The Christmas Mystery (Reissue)
Fifty years ago a girl disappeared from her home in Norway. She ran after a lamb and found herself travelling right across Europe to Palestine, and back through 2000 years to meet the Holy Family in Bethlehem. There she met angels, shepherds, wise men and other biblical characters who joined her on her pilgrimage; and she heard of many of the things that happened in the world in the last 2000 years. In present-day Norway, a boy acquires a strange old Advent calendar. Hidden in each of the windows is a tiny piece of paper. Little by little these pieces unfold the girl's story and as we learn what happened to her, another story is revealed - that of the strange old man who made the calender. top

    reviewed by Allen Gaborro
Norwegian-born, international bestselling novelist Jostein Gaarder splendidly exhibits the timelessness, the universality, and the agony of filial, but repudiated love in his book, That Same Flower . The book, Gaarder maintains, is a genuine reproduction of a personal letter composed for Saint Augustine, one of the Latin Fathers of the Christian Church and one of the greatest figures in Western philosophy, by his former lover Floria Aemilia. How Gaarder came upon a manuscript of the letter is an anecdote worth mentioning. He unexpectedly discovered the letter in 1995 while shopping in an antique bookstore in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After a bit of haggling with the bookstore's owner, Gaarder agreed to pay slightly more than $12,000 for the transcript even though he was uncertain at the time about its authenticity. Following a closer examination of the style of the letter's grammar and terminology however, Gaarder eventually convinced himself that it was indeed of Medieval origins. If we are to assume the validity of Gaarder's premise, that the letter (titled the Codex Floriae) is a legitimate transcription of an original medieval document, we can then be assured that he has stumbled onto a major historical find. Depressingly little information has been unearthed over the centuries about Saint Augustine's paramour, whom he resided with, along with their young son Adeodatus, for several years in North Africa and Italy prior to his fateful conversion into the Christian faith. What is known of the enigmatic Floria Aemilia is chiefly derived from what Augustine writes about her in his famous spiritual autobiography Confessions.
