  • ASIN: Book Description THE SANDMAN, written by New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman, was the most acclaimed comic book title of the 1990s. A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, THE SANDMAN is also widely considered one of the most original and artistically ambitious series of the modern age. By the time it concluded in 1996, it had made significant contributions to the artistic maturity of comic books and become a pop culture phenomenon in its own right. Now, DC Comics is proud to present this comics classic in an all-new Absolute Edition format. The first of four beautifully designed slipcased volumes, THE ABSOLUTE SANDMAN VOL. 1 collects issues 1-20 of The Sandman and features completely new coloring, approved by the author, on the first 18 issues, as well as a host of never-before-seen extra material, including the complete original Sandman Proposal, a gallery of character designs from Gaiman and the artists who originated the look of the Sandman, and the original script to the World Fantasy Award-winning THE SANDMAN #19, "A Midsummer Night's Dream," together with reproductions of the issue's original pencils by Charles Vess. Also included are a new introduction by DC's president Paul Levitz and a new afterword by Gaiman.

    Following His Dream
Neil Gaiman talks about his past,
present, and future as a storyteller.
Alex: Let's start at the beginning. Well, not the very beginning, but close enough. I understand that you used to be a journalist, but you gave up all that glamour and prestige to become a fiction writer. Why was that? Neil: Well, I was a rotten journalist. Just terrible. But I was a pretty good interviewer. I liked doing interviews, and I liked doing long magazine pieces. But I wound up drifting over into newspaper journalism. Alex: So you were a freelancer? Alex: That's very dramatic. Alex: You have to keep the excitement level up. Neil: It actually turned out to be an article about boredom, but it was fun. Alex: You said that you had three books published before you quit journalism? Neil: Yeah, ghastly beyond belief. Alex: Does that mean that you're not going to tell me what they were? Alex: I had heard that there was a book which you had "disowned", and I looked, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Neil: Good. There's only one book I've ever written which was written solely for the money... and it wasn't even very much money, but when you're very young and very hungry, and somebody's just offered you the opportunity to write a book, you take it. I don't even have a copy of it myself anymore.

Posted by Neil at 1:27 AM Pssst. This is now up and running. It's very skeletal right now. I suggested it, the webgoblin and the former webelf collaborated, I wrote some FAQs based on things people had asked on Twitter, Facebook or here, and we threw it up, figuring it was more important to get something up (two days before Hallowe'en) than to get it right.
Over the next year we'll make it perfect, and by the time for the run-up to next Hallowe'en I hope it'll be a real resource.

He began writing Sandman installments in the late 1980s, developing a passionate following along the way. After a break of several years from Sandman, he published the graphic novel Sandman: Endless Nights in 2003. In October of that year, Endless Nights reached number twenty on the New York Times bestseller list, a rare feat for a comic book. Gaiman has also achieved success with a novella, or short novel, for young adults, titled Coraline. The novel earned a number of prestigious awards, including the Hugo and Nebula awards for outstanding works of science fiction and fantasy, and the Bram Stoker award, which is given to exceptional works of horror.

Faced with a lack of comic books aimed at a more mature audience, Gaiman decided to fill that need himself. He wanted to write comic books when he grew up, although at the time he had no idea how to accomplish that goal. After graduating from high school in 1977, Gaiman became a journalist. We figured that since American Gods has recently been released in paperback that it was now a good time to talk to Neil Gaiman. But where to begin? It is near impossible when talking to someone like Neil to not retread over things that he has spoken about a thousand times before. So, we decided to let him talk and in doing so, he sang us a song about TV shows and told how the Pulitzers can sometimes seem like the Special Olympics. Not only that, no, not by a long shot. We also discuss his future work with Marvel Comics, his thoughts on the Spider-Man and Lord of the Rings movies, and all the latest news on his many film projects, including
