All-Reviews.com Book Review: Neverwhere
Author: Neil Gaiman Length: 388 pages Genre: Fantasy Awards : None Overall Rating: 3.5 Stars out of 4 Review by Copra Neil Gaiman, better known for his Sandman-cartoon series, ha written a lot of differrent stuff during his career: plays, cartoon scripts, short stories and finally a novel. It is kind of an continuation to his way of utilising legends and myths in modern day environment, a method he succesfully used in Sandman. The story was written as television series, from which Gaiman 'translated' it into a novel. Neverwhere starts with quite disturbing prologues, which decribe enough to get the reader going. There isn't much to tell about the plot without spoiling the excitement and surprises, which wait along the story. In brief: Main character is a normal man living in London, leading a normal 9 to 5 life and recently engaged with a splendid woman. One night he stumbles on a wounded girl, and his whole life changes as he is drawn into the Neverwhere: a world inhabited with outcasts and derelicts, who have fallen through the gaps of time and space to this wondrous world under London. Through the same gaps has fallen something else, too: the forgotten alleys, disused buildings, rooms and furniture. The geography of Neverwhere is tied into the Underground (London Metro) map and its names.

The Graveyard Book Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy.
He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead.
There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy—an ancient Indigo Man beneath the hill, a gateway to a desert leading to an abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer.
But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod’s family. . . .

Of Explorers and Button Eyes: Neil Gaiman's Coraline
      Reviewed by Tim Pratt
1 July 2002 T he canon of my childhood favorites was set, not surprisingly, in my childhood, and includes Lewis Carroll's Alice books, Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy, and too many others to list. And yet, recently, a new book made its way onto that list, and managed to inspire the same sense of adventure and wonder; to transport me, in all the good ways, back to childhood. That book is Coraline (which rhymes with "horror-wine," if you have Gaiman's British accent), the new YA by that increasingly impressive author-of-all-trades, Neil Gaiman. The phrase "instant classic" is an annoying oxymoron, but I'm tempted to use it for Gaiman's book anyway I think it's one that children and grown-ups will be reading for a long time. The US edition features fabulous illustrations by Dave McKean; I had no idea the master of photo-collage could draw so well. When I have children of my own, I'll be waiting impatiently for them to be old enough to enjoy hearing me read Coraline to them aloud.

With The Graveyard Book he appears to have exceeded even his own exacting standards, seeming to revel in creating the improbable and layering on impossible convolutions. The impossible he deals with through mind-twistingly clever links and attention to the most minute of details, the improbable becomes totally convincing through the sheer brilliance of the writing.

Neil Gaiman: Adults deserve good fairy tales, too
By Jonathan D. Austin CNN Interactive Books Editor Web posted on: Thursday, February 25, 1999 4:16:40 PM ATLANTA (CNN) Neil Gaiman thinks adults are getting the short end of the deal: Kids get to daydream and escape on fantastic trips of the imagination, guided by marvelous fairy tales, while being an adult means to leave imagination and fantasy behind. Gaiman believes that's wrong. He should know.

In the last 10 years since concluding the award-winning comic book series Sandman , writer Neil Gaiman has stretched his literary legs to write a number of popular and critically-acclaimed novels, a children's book, the English-language screenplay for the Japanese film Princess Mononoke , a television series for the BBC, and too many other things to name. Gaiman has also expended a considerable amount of time and energy raising money for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), a non-profit organization which defends the First Amendment rights of artists, retailers, and other comic-book professionals.

Neil Gaiman is a literary juggler. He gained his fame in comics, with beautiful works such as Violent Cases, Signal to Noise (both in collaboration with artist Dave McKean), and of course Sandman , America's most successful adult comicbook. Even early on, faced with DC's superhero theatrics in Black Orchid he thrived, doing justice to both DC continuity and finding the human face in its inhabitants. That seems his most remarkable ability. Whatever his subject and his medium from the adventures of Adam the Antichrist (the novel Good Omens , co-written with Terry Pratchett), short stories of myth and murder mysteries (collected thus far in Angels and Visitations , and the CD Warning, Contains Language

It takes a graveyard to raise a child. Nobody Owens, known as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised by ghosts, with a guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the dead. There are adventures in the graveyard for a boy—an ancient Indigo Man, a gateway to the abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, he will be in danger from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family. In The Graveyard Book , Neil Gaiman has created a charming allegory of childhood. Although the book opens with a scary scenea family is stabbed to death by "a man named Jack” the story quickly moves into more child-friendly storytelling. The sole survivor of the attackan 18-month-old babyescapes his crib and his house, and toddles to a nearby graveyard. Quickly recognizing that the baby is orphaned, the graveyard's ghostly residents adopt him, name him Nobody ("Bod"), and allow him to live in their tomb. Taking inspiration from Kipling’s
