A Modern Comedy
John Galsworthy
Manufacturer: Kessinger Publishing
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: Book Description 1929. English novelist and playwright, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932, Galsworthy became known for his portrayal of the British upper middle class and for his social satire. His most famous work was The Forsyte Saga of which this is the second part. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. Customer Reviews: A Modern Comedy I enjoyed this book. It was really nice to read more about Fleur, Soames and Jon. Very English,What! This is the second 'three book' volumn written by Galsworthy about the Frosyte family. He lived in the years, late 1800s to 1930, and wrote about morals and habits common to the time and place. By the time you get to this vol. you are very well aquainted with the family, their virtues and faults. If you are not English, which I am not, you may find, as I did, that there are many words, slang and otherwise, that are a bit confusing. But it was enjoyable to be exposed to this difference in language. (We don't really speak English here in America. We speak American!) But people are people wherever they may live and life experiences much the same. A very enjoyable record of a large and loyal family finding their way after the Big War, dealing with the scary changes in traditions and thought. I fully recommend it to lovers of sagas.

John Galsworthy was born at Kingston Hill in Surrey, England into an established wealthy family, the son of John and Blanche Bailey (née Bartleet) Galsworthy. His large Kingston upon Thames estate is now the site of three schools: Marymount International, Rokeby Preparatory School and Holy Cross. He attended Harrow and New College, Oxford , training as a barrister and was called to the bar in 1890. However, he was not keen to begin practising law and instead travelled abroad to look after the family's shipping business interests. During these travels he met Joseph Conrad , then the first mate of a sailing-ship moored in the harbour of Adelaide, Australia

John Galsworthy (18671933) , English novelist and playwright won the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his distinguished art of narration which takes its highest form in The Forsyte Saga " published between 1906 and 1921 and as a collection in 1922. The second series of novels in the Forsyte roman fleuve would be The White Monkey The Silver Spoon (1926), and Swan Song Maid in Waiting Flowering Wilderness (1932), and Over the River (1933) comprised the third. The Man of Property (1906) would be the first of the The Forsyte Saga . Chronicling three generations of the Victorian upper-class Forsyte family, it was followed by Indian Summer of a Forsyte In Chancery , and Awakening in 1920 and To Let in 1921. The Forsyte obsession with wealth, status, and acquisition is apparent. Galsworthy satirically though not unsympathetically criticises the hollow insularity of everything from matters of property and marriage to the ideologies of the very class he was born into.

Examination of the works of the English novelist/playwright.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc92.html
John Galsworthy Mr. Galsworthy has reaffirmed the existence of the common man; an individual long ignored upon the English stage. The West End society drama had no place for him. The man in the drawing-room is not upon speaking terms with the man in the street. Epigrammatic comedy gave him no part, for the common man does not deal in epigrams. The music halls burlesqued him, figuring him only with a battered silk hat, a red nose and a pair of parti-coloured trousers. Even melodrama failed to represent him fairly, for the common man is not addicted to crime. Bernard Shaw , engaged in bombarding the very civilization in which the common man believes, burlesqued him as completely as the music hall, stuffed him with persiflage to bursting point, and hurled him at the social order as a new weapon of offence. At this point, Mr. Galsworthy arrived. To all appearance he might never have read a line of Shaw, but he had just as little in common with Sir Arthur Pinero . The Court Theatre opened its doors and Mr. Galsworthy walked in. He proceeded at once to set up his pair of scales upon the stage and to test the social values. In the one pan a Liberal member of Parliament and his son; in the other Mrs. Jones, the charwoman, and her husband. As a makeweight the silver box. Here we see at once the interpenetration of classes which distinguishes Mr. Galsworthy. As in the novel

John Galsworthy , the son of a wealthy solicitor, was born at Kingston Hill in Surrey on 14th August 1867. Educated at Harrow and New College , Oxford, Galsworthy was called to the bar in 1890, but instead decided to become a writer.
Galsworthy's first collection of short-stories, From the Four Winds , was published in 1897. This was followed by the novel, The Island Pharisees (1904). These books sold poorly and Galsworthy later pointed out that for "eleven years, I made not one penny out of what I, but practically no others, counted as my profession."
Galsworthy's first real success was the play The Silver Box (1906). Later that year, his novel, The Man of Property , the first of his celebrated Forsyte Saga series was published.
Galsworthy held progressive views and supported prison reform, votes for women and opposed censorship. His plays Strife (1909) and Justice (1910) dealt with the themes of poverty, class and injustice.
On the outbreak of the First World War Galsworthy was 47 years old. Too old to fight, he worked in France at the Benevole Hospital for disabled soldiers. He also signed over his family house as a rest home for members of the

John Galsworthy
Born at Kingston Hill in Surrey to a wealthy solicitor and a Midlands manufacturer's daughter, John Galsworthy spent his childhood in the very sort of upper-middle-class family he would one day skewer in his novels. In the British tradition of using the novel for social propaganda, Galsworthy believed it was the duty of an artist to bring a problem to light but up to society to find a solution.
Educated at Harrow and New College, Oxford, Galsworthy studied law but found his true interest in literature, reading Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Rudyard Kipling, Herman Melville, Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, and Emile Zola. Instead of settling into practice as a barrister, he chose to travel, in part to forget an unrequited love for his country neighbor Sybil Carlisle. On a South Sea voyage in 1893, a chance meeting with Joseph Conrad ( Heart of Darkness) convinced Galsworthy to give up law for good and become a writer instead. At the age of 28, he began writing stories under the pseudonym John Sinjohn, publishing his first collection

John Galsworthy (1867-1933)
English novelist and playwright, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932.
Galsworthy was also a successful dramatist, his plays, written in a naturalistic style, usually examining some controversial ethical or social problem. They include The Silver Box (1906), which, like many of his other works, has a legal theme and depicts a bitter contrast of the law's treatment of the rich and the poor; Strife (1909), a study of industrial relations; Justice (1910), a realistic portrayal of prison life that roused so much feeling that it led to reform; and Loyalties (1922), the best of his later plays. He also wrote verse.
In 1905 Galsworthy married Ada Pearson, the divorced wife of his first cousin, A.J. Galsworthy. Galsworthy had, in secret, been closely associated with his future wife for about ten years before their marriage. Irene in The Forsyte Saga is to some extent a portrait of Ada Galsworthy, although her first husband was wholly unlike Soames Forsyte.
