Biography
Influences Style Thematic Concerns ... Further Exploration Biography The Spectator in Bogota. Leaf Storm , first novel, influenced by Faulkner, published; trans. 1972 1967published his masterwork, One Hundred Years of Solitude and continued to write fiction for the next several decades His US visa privileges have been clipped; he can enter the country whenever he wants but as an exception to the McCarren-Walter Act. He does come to the United States infrequently for a specific purpose, like giving a lecture or accepting an honorary degree. Currently he lives and writes in Mexico City. Influences The recurring image in his fiction of the old military man battered by circumstances recalls his grandfather, a retired colonel who fought on the Liberal side in the Colombian Civil War. Style Metamorphosis He is also influenced by William Faulkner in both the epic creation of an entire fictional world (in his case Macondo) and in the lyrical magic of his language; he points out that Faulkner is a Latin American writer as his world is that of the Gulf of Mexico. Thematic Concerns In his writing the individual never has any real choice; an aura of Greek tragedy carries the characters towards their destinies.

GARCIA MARQUEZ, Gabriel The Autumn of the Patriarch London, Cape, (1977). The uncorrected proof copy of the first British edition of Garcia Marquez's first novel after the worldwide success of One Hundred Years of Solitude . An ambitious, experimental novel: 269 pages in six chapters, each of which is a single paragraph, and each paragraph is only a handful of sentences. This copy is inscribed by the author on the half-title: "Para Con todo mi afecto, Gabriel, 2001." An uncommon proof and especially so signed. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by GARCIA MARQUEZ, Gabriel

GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ, Gabriel La Hojarasca Bogota, Ediciones S.L.B., 1955. The first edition of the Nobel Prize winner's first book, a short novel later published in the U.S. as "Leaf Storm" in the collection Leaf Storm and Other Stories . Set in the fictional town of Macondo, where much of his later fiction also takes place, the book covers three boom-and-bust decades in the town's history, the "leaf storm" of the title referring to the human "trash" which is blown into town in prosperity and out at decline. The colophon indicates 4000 copies were printed, but the publisher's financial problems dictated that they were retrieved from the printer only as paid for and most copies are assumed to have been left unpaid-for and eventually either pulped or otherwise lost. The rarity of the book and García Márquez's own statements he has been quoted as saying that prior to the success of One Hundred Years of Solitude none of his books had sold more than 700 copies support such a scenario. Foxing and acidification to both pages and covers; some minor creasing; stray pen mark to rear cover; about very good in self-wrappers. A scarce and important first book. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted.
