page: Sonnets of Dark Love Lorca's Sonnets of Dark Love , written in November 1935 and long suppressed by Lorca's family, were first published in a clandestine edition of 250 numbered copies in December 1983. As a result of this mysterious printing, Lorca's family was apparently pressured to finally officially publish the eleven sonnets in March 1984 in the Spanish newspaper ABC Curiously, what was most controversial were not the poems themselves, in which the beloved's sex or gender is never explicitly identified, but rather the title of the cycle of poems. The Lorca family wished to entitle the cycle Sonetos Sonnets ) or Sonetos de amor Love Sonnets ), the latter being the title under which they finally appeared in

Life.
Lorca's father was a farmer, his mother a schoolteacher. Struck by his musical gifts, his mother became his first piano teacher. When the family moved to the city of Granada, Lorca attended a Jesuit school there. At his father's urging, he then read law at the University of Granada but soon abandoned law to study literature, painting, and music. A precocious composer and excellent performer, he was "the musician" to his friends. To their surprise, in 1918 he published Impresiones y paisajes ("Impressions and Landscapes"), a book of prose inspired by a trip he had taken into Castile. The book suggested that Lorca soon might become known as "the writer." In 1919 he entered the residencia de estudiantes During his first two years at the residencia

His father, Federico García Rodriguez, was a successful farmer, a landowning liberal whounlike many of his neighborspaid his workers a fair wage. Lorca's mother, Vicenta Lorca Romero, had been a schoolteacher before becoming Don Federico's second wife in 1897. Federico used to claim that he inherited his intelligence from her, and his passionate temperament from his father. Some evocative words written by Lorca himself, cited by Gibson, aptly sum up the effects upon him of his childhood: "I love the countryside. I feel myself linked to it in all my emotions. My oldest childhood memories have the flavour of the earth. The meadows, the fields, have done wonders for me. The wild animals. . .the livestock, the people living on the land, all these are suggestive in a way that very few people understand. I recall them now exactly as I knew them in my childhood. . . .My very earliest experiences are associated with the land and work on the land. That is why there is at the basis of my life what psychoanalysts would call an 'agrarian complex.' . . .My whole childhood was centred on the village. Shepherds, fields, sky, solitude. Total simplicity. . . .I have a huge store of childhood recollections in which I can hear the people speaking. This is poetic memory, and I trust it implicitly."

Impresiones y Viajes (1919) was inspired by a trip to Castile with his art class in 1917. El Maleficio de la mariposa (1920), a play which caused a great scandal when it was produced. He also wrote Libro de poemas (1921), a compilation of poems based on Spanish folklore. Much of García Lorca's work was infused with popular themes such as Flamenco and Gypsy culture. In 1922, García Lorca organized the first "Cante Jondo" festival in which Spain's most famous "deep song" singers and guitarists participated. The deep song form permeated his poems of the early 1920s. During this period, García Lorca became part of a group of artists known as Romancero Gitano ("The Gypsy Ballads"), brought García Lorca far-reaching fame; it was reprinted seven times during his lifetime.

SUMMARY
Yerma (meaning 'Barren') is one of three tragic plays about peasants and rural life that make up Lorca's 'rural trilogy'.
It is possibly Lorca's harshest play following a woman's Herculean
struggle against the curse of infertility. The woman's barrenness
becomes a metaphor for her marriage in a traditional society that
denies women sexual or social equality. Her desperate desire for a

Assessment. No matter how localized the subject of Lorca's work, the themes that recur in them are universal: love and lust, death, motherhood, a brotherly compassion for the poor and humble, and, above all, cruelty, violence, and death resulting when primordial passions are frustrated by convention. The elemental passion in Lorca's poetry is expressed largely through concrete, voluptuous, sulfurous, vibrating, sometimes surrealistically juxtaposed images and symbols. He is a poet who must be ranked among the greatest of the 20th century. ( M.A.
