Sir Samuel Garth (1661-1719), physician in ordinary to George I and physican-general to the army, wrote the present offering as a record of the first attempt to establish a dispensary where poor people could gain advice and prescriptions from the best physicians. Most fellows of the College of Physicians supported such a plan, but a minority allied with the apothecaries and thwarted it by charging exhorbitant prices for the drugs prescribed. The poem itself lampoons the apothecaries and their allies through a mock Homeric battle. First published in 1699, it went through several editions and was widely read for the next fifty years.
