France Jean Genet (December 19, 1910 – April 15, 1986), was a prominent, sometimes infamous, French writer and later political activist. Early in his life, he was a vagabond and petty criminal; later in life, Genet wrote novels, plays, poems, and essays, including Querelle, The Thief's Journal, Our Lady of the Flowers, The Balcony, The Blacks, and The Maids. Genet's works represent a critique of values, turning them on their head. The Balcony takes place in a brothel between prostitutes and patrons. The Maids is based on the infamous Papin sisters, who murdered their employer and daughter in a scandalous affair in 1933. The Thief's Journal is a fictional autobiographical account of Genet's journeys across Europe, structured around a series of homosexual affairs. Genet was a minor cause celebre for his challenge to social norms.

Genet's mother was a young prostitute who raised him for the first year of his life before putting him up for adoption . Thereafter, Genet was raised in the provinces by a carpenter and his family, who according to Edmund White's biography, were loving and attentive. While he received excellent grades in school, his childhood involved a series of attempts to run away and incidents of petty theft (although White also suggests that Genet's later claims of a dismal, impoverished childhood were exaggerated to fit his outlaw image).

Description
Part-autobiography, part-fiction - 'a Genet with a Genet stuffing, like the prunes of Tours', as Sartre put it - The Thief's Journal is an account of Genet's impoverished travels across Europe in the 1930s. Encompassing vagrancy, petty theft, and prostitution, the book transforms such degradations into the gilded rites of an inverted moral code, with Genet its most devout adherent. Betrayal becomes worship; delinquency, heroism. The skeleton of the work is a series of gay encounters between the 'hero' and a succession of shady figures - the con artist, the pimp, the detective even - from the European demi-monde. Appropriating the language of the Church, Genet creates a homily to a trinity of his own making - homosexuality, theft and deception. First published in 1949, The Thief's Journal is justly regarded as a masterpiece of existentialist prose, and is a milestone in the history of gay literature.

this guy definitely needed to be smacked This book a first-person account of the author's life as a down-and-out lowlife in Europe between the wars had the potential to be one of the most engrossing, original books one would ever want to read.

Genet, Jean
(b . Dec. 19, 1910, Paris, Franced. April 15, 1986, Paris), French criminal and social outcast turned writer who, as a novelist, transformed erotic and often obscene subject matter into a poetic vision of the universe and, as a dramatist, became a leading figure in the avant-garde theatre, especially the Theatre of the Absurd. Genet, an illegitimate child abandoned by his mother, Gabrielle Genet, was raised by a family of peasants. Caught stealing at the age of 10, he spent part of his adolescence at a notorious reform school, Mettray, where he experienced much that was later described in the novel Miracle de la rose Miracle of the Rose ). His autobiographical Journal du voleur The Thief 's Journal ) gives a complete and uninhibited account of his life as a tramp, pickpocket, and male prostitute in Barcelona, Antwerp, and various other cities ( c. 1930-39). It also reveals him as an aesthete, an existentialist, and a pioneer of the Absurd. He began to write in 1942 while imprisoned for theft at Fresnes and produced an outstanding novel
