Amazon.com British parliamentarian and soldier Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) conceived of his plan for Decline and Fall while "musing amid the ruins of the Capitol" on a visit to Rome. For the next 10 years he worked away at his great history, which traces the decadence of the late empire from the time of the Antonines and the rise of Western Christianity. "The confusion of the times, and the scarcity of authentic memorials, pose equal difficulties to the historian, who attempts to preserve a clear and unbroken thread of narration," he writes. Despite these obstacles, Decline and Fall remains a model of historical exposition, and required reading for students of European history. Book Description Download Description "It was Rome, on the 15th of October 1764, as I sat musing amid the ruins of the Capitol, while the barefooted friars were singing vespers in the temple of Jupiter, that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind," recorded Edward Gibbon with characteristic exactitude. Over a period of some twenty years, the luminous eighteenth-century historiana precise, dapper, idiosyncratic little gentleman famous for rapping his snuff-boxdevoted his considerable genius to writing an epic chronicle of the entire Roman Empire's decline. His single flash of inspiration produced what is arguably the greatest historical work in any l

Critical observations on the sixth book of the Aeneid.
London: printed for P. Elmsley, 1770 - 8vo, (ii), 56 pp., lacking the half-title, rebound in calf-backed boards. First edition of his first original publication in English. In the Critical observations, Gibbon launched an anonymous attack on Bishop Warburton's allegorical interpretation of Aeneid VI. His assault is learned and comprehensive, but Gibbon was later to express regret at his tone. The prose style is somewhat unrestrained, with liberal use of capitals for emphasis, and shows signs of his later stateliness and pomposity. Like most of Gibbon's early publications, the Critical observations is very uncommon. Norton 14; Rothschild 941. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) was made famous by his multi-volume work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire , written between, 1776 and 1787. For quite a long time it was the standard history on the Roman civilization and continues to be used and read to this day. Despite such a contribution to the field of historiography, Gibbon's opinion about history always remained cynical: History is little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind. Gibbon's prose style is rather elaborate and ornate, something which makes it difficult for many readers to get through his books. Indeed, some have condemned his writing as atrocious, but you can judge for yourself from this, the opening paragraph: Gibbon is also unusual in that the footnotes play such an important role in his work. Certainly, any scholarly book will have important information and references contained in footnotes, but Gibbon's

Writer and historian of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon was born in England on April 27, 1737 and spent his youth on the banks of Lake Geneva . As was the tradition with upper class English families, he came to Switzerland to complete his education. The young man studied at the faculty of law, language and history in Lausanne , where he also frequented the literary salons to read the foreign press and play whist. He fell head over heels with the pastor's daughter, Suzanne Curchod, and wanted to marry her, but her father was categorically opposed. Gibbon had to resign himself to a life of celibacy. The young man thus left the city to forget his sorrows, only to return five years later. He wrote his life's work
