    Riding shotgun with William Gibson
In a new documentary, the archetypal cyberpunk author displays his new obsession: Media, not technology.
By Andrew Leonard Sitting in the back of a limousine, alternately smoking a cigarette or smiling at the unexpected results of his own eloquence, William Gibson looks comfortable. That's a good thing, too, since the vast majority of "No Maps For These Territories" an 88-minute documentary about the science-fiction author that screened at this year's Slamdance festival is shot, literally, on the road. As he reclines, protected by his seatbelt, and occasionally, by a pair of dark sunglasses, he exists in nowheresville. We don't know where Gibson's going or where he's been. Every now and then we glimpse a freeway sign or some shimmery neon. Director Mark Neale also likes to play visual tricks overlaying images across the car windows that are obviously not the local landscape. Neale has a background in music video, and he employs plenty of MTV jumpiness to illustrate his narrative. The general effect is unsettling we're always moving, but never getting anywhere. But the technique also helps concentrate the viewer on what's important Gibson's words: his elaborations on the act of writing, his personal history, drugs, religion, pornography and, of course, the Internet, or, to use the word that most everybody knows by now Gibson coined, cyberspace.

Not zero when it comes to reading So if you haven't read the previous 3 Gibson novels you can probably follow this one, but there would be a lot missing from your total appreciation of the current novel. This one certainly ties up a lot of loose ends and has all kinds of cool stuff (like the Festo devices) to make it interesting. I can't be sure how this would read if I hadn't read the last 3. I highly recommend this novel AFTER you have read the this "sequence" from the beginning. Search for Pants goes nowhere A long term fan of Gibson, I found this to be a "one sequel too many" type of book. My impression is he is attempting to apply espionage type scenarios over the fashion industry which ends up leaving the reader puzzled as to the extreme reactions of the antagonists (the good and bad guys) over attempts to find out the source of blue jeans. And the scenarios are endlessly repeated with Mr. BigEnds "full english breakfast" scene being played out numerous times. I finally gave up after 75% of the book as it was not going anywhere with any believable story line.

William Gibson Bibliography / Mediagraphy
Just the facts, but far more complete than the other Johnny-come-lately "6 books and out" lists out there. All lists are in real-world chronological order. The chronology of the "Sprawl" series is Johnny Mnemonic short story - New Rose Hotel short story - Burning Chrome short story - Neuromancer - Count Zero - Mona Lisa Overdrive. Other stories in Burning Chrome fit more or less tightly into the imagined future of the series. By the time Gibson wrote the Skinner's Room short story - virtual light - Idoru - All Tomorrow's Parties sequence set closer in time, the near future had turned out different from the "Sprawl" future. There's a fascinating cyberpunk timeline at http://www.subsitu.com/cns/tl.htm that dovetails Gibson's work with the cyber, punk, and sf goings-on at the same time.
Summary:

W HAT IS LIFEreal or virtualbut the angle of vision? Perhaps we are only what we know, what our experience encompasses. In Idoru , William Gibson, the father of cyberpunk, once again takes this question into his world, into his "virtuality." The new novel marks Gibson's return to the unique techno-decadent 21st century of his previous works. Spinning off from Gibson's last bestseller, Virtual Light , the story takes place in a Tokyo rebuilt by nanotechnology after a massive millennial earthquake. Net searcher Colin Laney is a man who sees things in data like he "sees things in clouds, except the things he sees are really there." He possesses a talent for discerning crucial information"nodal points"from random amalgamations of data on a single person. That is, he can predict the outcome of an event or the behavior of a subject. When one of his subjects turns up dead, Laney finds himself without a job and targeted as a scapegoat by Slitscan, his former employer. Laney goes to Japan to interview for a job as data analyst. His new employer wants him to study Rez, singer for the band Lo/Rez, a Japanese superstar rock duo. Rez has apparently announced his intention to marry "idoru" (idol) Rei Toei, an information-generated personality-construct of a beautiful woman that flickers between reality and virtuality with the ease of a ghost. This decision jeopardizes the financial empire of Lo/Rez and its managers.

Most would be surprised to learn that the term "cyberspace" had roots in the state of South Carolina. Nevertheless, Conway born author William Gibson wrote many science fiction novels including Neuromancer , in which he depicts a network of computers with "unthinkable complexity" called "cyberspace." He also contributed words to the science fiction vocabulary such as "virtual reality". Much of his work is based on "Orwell style" science fiction that portrays a bleak future for humans, being ruled by technology. His books opened the door to cyberpunk literature, a genre in which large corporations and deteriorating values dominate the world of the future.
Gibson received his start as a contributor to the science fiction magazine Omni . He received recognition for his complex plots and the interesting situations into which he placed his characters. Neuromancer is considered by some to be perhaps the most important science fiction work of the 1980's.
