Gide was born in Paris, France on November 22, 1869. His father was a Paris University professor of law and died 1880. His uncle was the political economist Charles Gide. Gide was brought up in isolated conditions in Normandy and became a prolific writer at an early age. In 1895, after his mother's death, he married his cousin Madeleine Rondeaux but the marriage remained unconsummated.
In 1891 Gide published his first novel, Les Cahiers d'Andre Walter. From 1893-94 Gide traveled in northern Africa. He befriended Oscar Wilde in Algiers and later began to recognize his homosexual orientation. In 1896 he was mayor of a commune in Normandy.
In 1908 Gide helped found the literary magazine Nouvelle Revue franaise (The New French Review).
In the 1920s Gide became a inspiration for writers like Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1923 he published a book on Fyodor Dostoyevsky; however, when he defended homosexuality in the public edition of Corydon (1924) he received widespread condemnation. He later considered this his most important work.
In 1923 he conceived a daughter named Catherine with another woman, Maria Van Rysselberghe. His wife Madeleine died in 1938. Later he used the background of his unconsummated marriage in his novel Et Nuck Manet in Te (1951).

Gide's career ranged from its beginnings in the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars Known for his fiction as well as his autobiographical works, Gide exposes to public view the conflict and eventual reconciliation between the two sides of his personality, split apart by a strait-laced education and a narrow social moralism. Gide's work can be seen as an investigation of freedom and empowerment in the face of moralistic and puritanical constraints, and gravitates around his continuous effort to achieve intellectual honesty. His self-exploratory texts reflect his search of how to be fully oneself, even to the point of owning one's sexual nature, without at the same time betraying one's values. His political activity is informed by the same ethos, as suggested by his repudiation of

    Biography
French writer, a novelist, essayist, critic, playwright and leader of French liberal thought who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1947. One of the founders of the monthly magazine, La Nouvelle Revue Francaise, he was controversial in his time for his frank defense of homosexuality (he was probably bisexual), and for his occasional espousals (and later disavowals) of communism. His major novels are "The Immoralist," 1902, "Lafcadio’s Adventure," 1914 and "The Counterfeiters," 1926. He drew upon his own experience and concerns in a search for new ethics to replace prejudice. Andre Paul Guillaume Gide was raised in a family dominated by women as his father had died when he was 11. He attended various French schools, and published his first work in 1891, "Les Cahiers d’Andre Walter" ("The Notebooks of Andre Walter"), and a number of other works thereafter at his own expense. When "Fruits of the Earth" appeared in 1897, it was the most extreme example of Gide’s attraction to poetic prose, and was a breakthrough for Gide in its celebration of the senses. Gide's preoccupation with individual moral responsibilities led him to seek public office. After filling municipal positions in Normandy, he became a special envoy of the colonial ministry, 1925-1926 and wrote two books describing conditions in the French African colonies. These books, released in 1927, were instrumental in bringing about reforms in the French colony law. His work continued in novels, plays, critical studies and poetry.

Late works. In 1938 Gide's wife, Madeleine, died. After a long estrangement they had been brought together by her final illness. To him she was always the greatperhaps the onlylove of his life. With the outbreak of World War II, Gide began to realize the value of tradition and to appreciate the past. In a series of imaginary interviews written in 1941 and 1942 for Le Figaro, he expressed a new concept of liberty, declaring that absolute freedom destroys both the individual and society: freedom must be linked with the discipline of tradition. From 1942 until the end of the war Gide lived in North Africa. There he wrote "Theseus," whose story symbolizes Gide's realization of the value of the past: Theseus returns to Ariadne only because he has clung to the thread of tradition. In June 1947 Gide received the first honour of his life: the Doctor of Letters of the University of Oxford. It was followed in November by the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1950 he published the last volume of his Journal

    Description
Superb novel by modern French master deals with the consequences of amoral hedonism. It is the story of Michel, who tries to rise above good and evil and give free rein to his passions. In so doing, he neglects his wife, with tragic consequences. This excellent new English translation by Stanley Appelbaum retains all the passion, intensity and purity of style of the original. Introductory Note. Map. Footnotes. With today's headlines and talk shows, it takes a lot to shock a readercertainly more than was required in 1902, when André Gide's The Immoralist was first published. What was seen then as a story of dereliction translates today into a tale of introspection and fierce self-discovery. While traveling to Tunis with his new bride, the Parisian scholar Michel is overcome by tuberculosis. As he slowly convalesces, he revels in the physical pleasures of living and resolves to forgo his studies of the past in order to experience the presentto let "the layers of acquired knowledge peel away from the mind like a cosmetic and reveal, in patches, the naked flesh beneath, the authentic being hidden there."

    Life and Works:

As his family was wealthy, he was able to devote himself to writing. His first prose work was the symbolist influenced, anonymously authored The Notebooks of Andre Walter , but by 1900 he had practically abandoned poetry. Gide fell in love with his cousin, the devoutly Protestant Madeleine Rondeaux, but the family separated them. In 1895, following his mother's death, Gide married Madeleine, who inspired a number of his works. Although they loved each other, their marriage was unconsummated. In 1893 and 1894 Gide traveled to North Africa, learning different moral and sexual conventions which gave basis for his psychological novels The Immoralist (1902) and Strait is the Gate (1909). In Algeria he met Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, who shocked him with their boldness and precipitated his revolt against his puritanical background. It was here that he realised that he was homosexual. Henceforth his work lived on the never resolved tensions between a strict artistic discipline, a puritanical moralism, and the desire for unlimited sensual indulgence and abandonment to life. Les Nourritures terrestres Fruits of the Earth ), a book of prose poems, became in the 1920s his most popular work, influencing a generation of young writers, including the existentialists
