Description
Here, for the first time, is a volume that gathers the published verse of Allen Ginsberg in its entirety, a half century of brilliant work from one of America's great poets. The chief figure among the Beats, Ginsberg changed the course of American poetry, liberating it from closed academic forms with the creation of open, vocal, spontaneous, and energetic postmodern verse in the tradition of Walt Whitman, Guillaume Apollinaire, Hart Crane, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams. Ginsberg's classics Howl, Reality Sandwiches, Kaddish, Planet News

42. Allen Ginsberg
Un analisi della poetica dell autore.
http://web.tiscali.it/Pensiero_Individuale/ginsberg.htm

This album also documents the liaison between Ginsberg and the founder of the Italian 'hermetic' school of poetry, Giuseppe Ungaretti, whose poems are here translated and declaimed by the American guru. Ginsberg, known for his bizarre live acts and sharp criticism of the western world through farce and sarcasm, was here listened to carefully by the authorities and then charged with accusations of violating the Italian penal code. His response was to show up at the police station carrying a bouquet of flowers and gesturing a mudra over the police officer's head to expel demons."

GIB (Ginsberg's Intelligent Bridgeplayer)
GIB was written by Matthew L. Ginsberg and uses techniques from artificial intelligence to build the world's first expert-level computer bridge player. The work has been supported in part by the Computational Intelligence Research Laboratory (CIRL) at the University of Oregon GIB has received a great deal of press as a result of its participation in the Par Contest at the 1998 World Bridge Championships , which were held in Lille, France. In an invitational field consisting of 34 of the world's best card players and GIB, GIB finished 12th. Hands in which GIB has outplayed world-class human players are also the subject of a series of articles in the Dutch bridge magazine IMP GIB has successfully solved 64% of the deals in Fred Gitelman's Bridge Master product. Bridge Baron, one of GIB's most popular competitors, solved only 18% of the deals, providing still further evidence that GIB's card play is at a level far superior to that of any other program. Finally, William Forrester reports similar results when testing GIB on the hands in Blackwood's 1978 Play of the Hand with Blackwood GIB's bidding is based on the data file that is distributed with Meadowlark Bridge. Unlike Meadowlark, however, GIB augments the basic bidding rules with a Borel simulation in order to provide judgement to the system.

49. A Supermarket In California
Text of the poem.
http://www.palace.net/~llama/poetry/supermarket
A Supermarket in California What thoughts I have of you tonight, Walt Whitman, for I walked down the sidestreets under the trees with a headache self-conscious looking at the full moon. In my hungry fatigue, and shopping for images, I went into the neon fruit supermarket, dreaming of your enumerations! What peaches and what penumbras! Whole families shopping at night! Aisles full of husbands! Wives in the avocados, babies in the tomatoes!and you, Garcia Lorca, what were you doing down by the watermelons? I saw you, Walt Whitman, childless, lonely old grubber, poking among the meats in the refrigerator and eyeing the grocery boys. I heard you asking questions of each: Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my Angel? I wandered in and out of the brilliant stacks of cans following you, and followed in my imagination by the store detective. We strode down the open corridors together in our solitary fancy tasting artichokes, possessing every frozen delicacy, and never passing the cashier. Where are we going, Walt Whitman? The doors close in an hour. Which way does your beard point tonight? (I touch your book and dream of our odyssey in the supermarket and feel absurd.) Will we walk all night through solitary streets? The trees add shade to shade, lights out in the houses, we'll both be lonely. Will we stroll dreaming of the lost America of love past blue automobiles in driveways, home to our silent cottage? Ah, dear father, graybeard, lonely old courage-teacher, what America did you leave when Charon quit poling his ferry and you got out on a smoking bank and stood watching the boat disappear on the black waters of Lethe?

Ginsberg, Allen
Perhaps the most noted American poet of the 'beat' generation, he first met Dylan in December 1963 and they have remained friends ever since, recording together in 1971 and 1982. He was also a member of the 1975-6 Rolling Thunder Revue. Clinton Heylin:"Bob Dylan: Behind The Shades, a Biography" Allen Ginsberg died April 5th, 1997, at the age of 70.
AllenGinsberg.org
Date: Fri, 18 Apr 1997 09:40:08 -0700 To: Karl Erik Andersen (karlerik@monet.no) From: sscobie@uvic.ca (Stephen Scobie) Subject: Re: Ginsberg Karl Erik, Here is the piece on Ginsberg I wrote for On the Tracks. All the best, Stephen The relationship between Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan was often portrayed, not least by Ginsberg and Dylan themselves, as a father-and-son relationship. Most notably, in Dylan's film Renaldo and Clara, Ginsberg appears as a fictional character called The Father, and several scenes show him offering religious instruction to Dylan as Renaldo. Of course, these scenes are ironic in many ways: two Jewish poets playing out motifs from Christian theology; the whole joke (a friendly, and entirely non-homophobic joke) of the notoriously gay Ginsberg being portrayed as a progenitor. But beneath the irony there is an entirely serious tribute to the depth and commitment of the friendship between the two. Chronologically, they are in fact somewhat closer than "father and son" would suggest. Ginsberg (born in 1926) was a mere fifteen years older than Dylan (born in 1941). Moreover, Ginsberg was a slow starter in publishing his work; his first book, Howl, appeared in 1956, a mere five years before Dylan's first record. As far as the dates are concerned, it might be more sensible to see Ginsberg not as a father but as an elder brother. And as the two got older, the distance between them must have shrunk even further.
