The People Ginsberg, Allen
b. June 3, 1926, Newark, N.J., U.S.
d. April 5, 1997, New York, N.Y. American poet whose epic poem Howl (1956) is considered to be one of the most significant products of the Beat movement.
Ginsberg grew up in Paterson, N.J., where his father, Louis Ginsberg, himself a poet, taught English. Allen Ginsberg's mother, whom he mourned in his long poem Kaddish (1961), was confined for years in a mental hospital. Ginsberg was influenced in his work by the poet William Carlos Williams, particularly toward the use of natural speech rhythms and direct observations of unadorned actuality.
While at Columbia University, where his anarchical proclivities pained the authorities, Ginsberg became close friends with Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, who were later to be numbered among the Beats. After leaving Columbia in 1948, he traveled widely and worked at a number of jobs from cafeteria floor mopper to market researcher.
Howl, Ginsberg's first published book, laments what he believed to have been the destruction by insanity of the "best minds of [his] generation." Dithyrambic and prophetic, owing something to the romantic bohemianism of Walt Whitman, it also dwells on homosexuality, drug addiction, Buddhism, and Ginsberg's revulsion from what he saw as the materialism and insensitivity of post-World War II America.

69. Six Poets At Six Gallery
October 7, 1955 reading with Michael McClure, Philip Lamantia, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Phil Whalen, Kenneth Rexroth, San Francisco. First reading of Howl by Ginsberg. Start of modern oral poetry tradition.
http://www.mundomundo.com/6-poets.html
Six Poets at Six Gallery It was the poetry slam to end all slams - Philip Lamantia, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Phil Whalen, Kenneth Rexroth, and Jack Kerouac.
The legendary "Six Poets at Six Gallery" reading was held on October 7, 1955 in San Francisco at the Six Gallery, an art gallery converted from a garage. Kenneth Rexroth organized the evening to promote Alan Ginsburg, Michael McClure and other young poets.
The Six Poets reading drew an audience of about 150 people. The are conflicting versions of what happened that night. Michael McClure's can be found in his book "Scratching The Beat Surface". Kerouac's version was published in "The Dharma Bums".
What was it like to be at the Six Gallery that night? Imagine you walk in the door and there's Jack Kerouac taking the money. You hand him the dough and he runs out to buy some red wine. The place is dark, and smoky, with avant garde pictures on the walls. You sit down at your table just as the show begins...
Kenneth Rexroth says a few words and introduces Philip Lamantia. He reads from poems by John Hoffman. Next Michael McClure reads "Point Lobos: Animism" and "For the Death of 100 Whales" followed by Philip Whalen reading "Plus Ca Change". He is followed by Allen Ginsberg that creates a stir as he starts to read "Howl"...

If conflicts arise you may be sure that certain powers intend to keep this conflict under operation since they hope to profit from the situation. To concern yourself with surface political conflicts is to make the mistake of the bull in the ring, you are charging the cloth. That is what politics is for, to teach you the cloth. William Blake and Allen Ginsberg: Poets of a Fallen World, Prophets of the New World
This thesis looks at the prophetic tradition in the poetry of William Blake and Allen Ginsberg and the artistic kinship that Ginsberg felt toward the poet he considered his "guru."
This thesis earned the President's Award for Undergraduate Research and the Humanities and Fine Arts Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement from the State University of New York at Albany in 1988. Professor Don Byrd served as Advisor.
Those familiar with William Blake and the prophetic tradition may wish to read the introduction and then skip to Chapter IV.

Introduction Literature is art, an expression of the human mind, body, and soul, forged with skill, genius, and inspiration. When one comes upon holy literature art which is held sacred by some culture or group of people one finds that one's personal reaction to the art depends to a large extent on one's personal religious beliefs. The fundamental question the reader must ask is whether the text in question is holy to his or herself. The Old Testament of the Bible is accepted by a large percentage of Western civilization as holy as the Word of God. At the same time, in this age of science, Adam and Eve are largely seen as pure symbols, either of some ancient state of mankind in evolution, as psychological/mythical archetypes of the collective human mind, or as pure fictions, having little or no connection with either God or mankind in any real sense. It is one thing to read the first few books of the Bible as a symbolic representation of the creation of the universe and of the rise of man above the level of the animals, and against his brother. It is quite another thing to come across an interpretation of this text which accepts its events as literally true, then turns the entire scenario inside out.
