By Gregory Corso and Allen Ginsberg
Gregory Corso: What is your department? William Burroughs: Kunst und Wissenschaft. Gregory Corso: What say you about political conflicts? William Burroughs: Political conflicts are merely surface manifestations. If conflicts arise you may be sure that certain powers intend to keep this conflict under operation since they hope to profit from the situation. To concern yourself with surface political conflicts is to make the mistake of the bull in the ring, you are charging the cloth. That is what politics is for, to teach you the cloth. Just as the bullfighter teaches the bull, teaches him to follow, obey the cloth. Gregory Corso: Who manipulates the cloth? William Burroughs: Death Allen Ginsberg: What is death? William Burroughs: Gregory Corso: William Burroughs: Yes, I can give you a precise answer to that. I feel that the change, the mutation in consciousness, will occur spontaneously once certain pressures now in operation are removed. I feel that the principal instrument of monopoly and control that prevents expansion of consciousness is the word lines controlling thought, feeling and apparent sensory impressions of the human host.

"I dare anyone to squeeze between two covers a more varied, useful and flat out entertaining sampling of the personalities that make the seventh art the liveliest."
David Hudson, IFC.com Order now at Amazon Beatnik Chic Chuck Workman's The Source An uneven new documentary looks at all things Beat. digg_skin = 'icon'; digg_bgcolor = '#f2f2f2'; digg_window = 'new'; digg_media = 'news'; digg_topic = 'arts_culture'; Gary Morris The Beats have returned with a vengeance. New editions of On the Road are rolling off the presses; interest in Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs is at an all-time high; Beat women like Diane di Prima are getting some well-deserved attention, as are black Beats such as Amiri Baraka. Like other counterculture movements, the Beat generation has for some been reduced to a fashion statement — chinos, T-shirt, and masculine scowl. It’s also been neatly coopted by corporations seeking street credibility — even Ginsberg did a Gap ad before he died. It’s not hard to imagine Kerouac’s face next to John and Yoko’s in those duplicitous "Think Different" billboards from Apple. Chuck Workman’s The Source looks at these issues and the whole history of the Beats in a intriguing, if ultimately rather shallow, documentary that’s less a linear biography of the movement than a kind of "Beat chic" sampler. (No real surprise here: Workman’s also responsible for those slick, empty montages at the Academy Awards every year.) This collage portrait moves giddily from the ‘40s to the ‘90s, from historical footage to Hollywood send-ups of Beat culture, from realism to re-creation via a trio of actors who impersonate Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. Newsreel footage of Eisenhower America and Levittown, shots from

The Information You MUST Have at Your Fingertips When You Appear at Your Hearing
In my experience, judges appreciate you and your attorney if you can quickly review background information and proceed quickly to the heart of the matter.  In fact, I generally ask leading questions (questions that suggest the answer) when I cover background information and not once has a judge interrupted me. Here is the background information that you need to have at your fingertips: Filed under Hearing process Preparing for your hearing by Jonathan Ginsberg

In my disability practice I regularly get calls and emails from potential clients who have not yet filed an application for benefits.   Is there anything that a disability lawyer can do for you when you first apply?  Is there any reason to wait to apply?  In this episode I try to answer these questions. Essays, examples, links and interviews presenting a uniquely American form of haiku, created by poet Allen Ginsberg. Features the American sentences of Paul Nelson.
    http://www.americansentences.com
This is a website to present and foster a poetic form created by Allen Ginsberg and known as American Sentences. (More details are in my 2005 essay .) They are haiku-length poems that Allen suggested be limited to 17 syllables, like haiku in Japanese and like the mantra at the end of the Heart Sutra in Buddhism: Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha. I first became aware of the form when I read Cosmpolitan Greetings , Allen's 1994 book. I had the honor of interviewing him for that book. ( Listen to some audio cuts from that interview. It took until 2001 before I was able to really investigate this form at the prompting of Anne Waldman and Andrew Schelling who presented that, along with some of Allen's other poetics, at the Northwest SPokenword LAB in April of that year. ( Listen to their discussion of the form here. I have written one of these sentences every day since January 1, 2001. I find it an amazing way to sharpen my perception and learn how to eliminate unnecessary syllables. It aids in a sort of pre-editing that supports my spontaneous writing practice. It is my hope that others will take on this form and use it as a mode of deepening their consciousness or simply for kicks. If teaching it in a workshop

THE DEATH OF THE BEAT GENERATION
    By Jesse Monteagudo
The recent deaths of gay writers William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Herbert Huncke ended one of the most influential literary movements in American history: the Beat Generation. Burroughs was the Beats' father figure and literary innovator; Ginsberg its publicist and poet laureate; and Huncke the flamboyant figure who inspired the Beat writers and introduced the word "beat" to their vocabulary. Though several minor writers and personalities are still alive, to all extent and purposes the Beat Generation is dead. To Herbert Huncke, who took the word from show business and carnival slang, "beat" meant "exhausted, at the bottom of the world, looking up or out, sleepless, wide- eyed, perceptive, rejected by society, on your own, streetwise." Jack Kerouac took Huncke's word and expanded on it in 1948 when, according to John Clellon Holmes, he referred to theirs as "a beat generation". Holmes's 1952 article, "This Is the Beat Generation," used Kerouac's creation and launched it upon an unsuspecting world. In 1957, after Kerouac's On the Road became a bestseller, Herb Caen of the San Francisco Chronicle coined the term "beatnik" to refer to the unorthodox youngsters who gathered in the bars and coffee houses of San Francisco's North Beach.
