Book Summary of Selected Short Stories Of Weldon Kees
By the age of thirty, Weldon Kees (1914-55) was a poet, journalist, musician, painter, photographer, and short story writer living in New York City. Despite a contract for a forthcoming novel, however, he stopped writing fiction, moved to San Francisco, and worked as an artist and filmmaker. On July 18, 1955, his car was found on the Golden Gate Bridge, and he has not been seen since.
These stories by Kees, predominantly set in Depression-era mid-America, feature bleak, realistic settings and characters resigned to their meager lives. The owner of an auto parts store occasionally "sells" his sister Betty Lou to interested patrons; a cryptic message in library books indicates the yearnings of a silenced patron; a young woman taking tickets at the Roseland Gardens futilely dreams of escape from the future she sees for herself; and an old man carefully saves his money to fulfill the requirements of a chain letter only to be disappointed by a spiteful daughter-in-law. Many of these stories are set in the Nebraska of Kees's youth, and they are written from a Midwestern sensibility: keenly observant, darkly humorous, and absurdly fantastic.

5. Can Poetry Matter? - 91.05
Gioia s essay on the state of contemporary poetry.

The Atlantic Monthly May 1991
Can Poetry Matter?
Poetry has vanished as a cultural force in America.
If poets venture outside their confined world, they can work
to make it essential once more

by Dana Gioia

A MERICAN POETRY now belongs to a subculture. No longer part of the mainstream of artistic and intellectual life, it has become the specialized occupation of a relatively small and isolated group. Little of the frenetic activity it generates ever reaches outside that closed group. As a class poets are not without cultural status. Like priests in a town of agnostics, they still command a certain residual prestige. But as individual artists they are almost invisible. What makes the situation of contemporary poets particularly surprising is that it comes at a moment of unprecedented expansion for the art. There have never before been so many new books of poetry published, so many anthologies or literary magazines. Never has it been so easy to earn a living as a poet. There are now several thousand college-level jobs in teaching creative writing, and many more at the primary and secondary levels. Congress has even instituted the position of poet laureate, as have twenty-five states. One also finds a complex network of public subvention for poets, funded by federal, state, and local agencies, augmented by private support in the form of foundation fellowships, prizes, and subsidized retreats. There has also never before been so much published criticism about contemporary poetry; it fills dozens of literary newsletters and scholarly journals.

He retired early from his career as a corporate executive at General Foods to write full-time. From January 29, 2003, until January 22, 2009, he was chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the U.S. government 's arts agency, and has worked to revitalize an organization that had suffered bitter controversies about the nature of grants to artists in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Gioia has sought to encourage jazz , which he calls the only uniquely American form of art, to promote reading and performance of Shakespeare and to increase the number of Americans reading literature . Before taking the NEA post, Gioia was a resident of Santa Rosa, California , and before that, of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York

13. Essays By Dana Gioia
On Robert Frost's Nothing Gold Can Stay There is a distinctive category of short poem in English that has never been given a proper name.
http://www.danagioia.net/essays/efrost2.htm
Dana Gioia
On Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay"
"Nothing Gold Can Stay" first appeared in Frost's 1923 volume, New Hampshire New Hampshire was a diverse collection of longer narratives and satires mixed with short lyric poems, including several very brief works. The most memorable of these short poems were "Nothing Gold Can Stay," "Fire and Ice," and "Dust of Snow," now all classic anthology pieces. All three illustrate Frost's mastery of the short poem, but none better exemplifies the possibilities of the form than "Nothing Gold Can Stay." "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is remarkably brief. Only eight lines long, it consists of just forty words. The diction is extremely simple. No word is longer than two syllables. Most are monosyllabic. The meter is slightly unusual for Frost–iambic trimeter (a line with three strong stresses usually spread across six syllables). The poet usually preferred longer lines like iambic tetrameter (the eight syllable line of "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening") or pentameter (the ten syllable line of "Acquainted With the Night" and his other sonnets). "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is, in fact, the only poem in New Hampshire (out of forty-four pieces) that is written in the short trimeter line. All of these stylistic features contribute to the poem's expressive brevity and lyric compression.

Gioia has published three full-length collections of poetry, as well as eight chapbooks. His poetry collection, INTERROGATIONS AT NOON, won the 2002 American Book Award. An influential critic as well, Gioia's 1991 volume CAN POETRY MATTER?, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle award, is credited with helping to revive the role of poetry in American public culture.
Gioia's many literary anthologies include TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN POETRY, 100 GREAT POETS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, THE LONGMAN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT FICTION, AND LITERATURE: AN INTRODUCTION TO FICTION, POETRY, DRAMA, AND WRITING. His poems, translations, essays, and reviews have appeared in many magazines including THE NEW YORKER, THE ATLANTIC, THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD, THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, SLATE, and THE HUDSON REVIEW. Gioia has written two opera libretti and is an active translator of poetry from Latin, Italian, and German.
Since becoming Chairman of the NEA, Gioia has succeeded in garnering enthusiastic bi-partisan support in the United States Congress for the mission of the Arts Endowment, as well as in strengthening the national consensus in favor of public funding for the arts and arts education. (BUSINESS WEEK MAGAZINE referred to him as "The Man Who Saved the NEA.")
