Gissing was born in Wakefield , Yorkshire, to lower-middle class parents. A brilliant student, he won a scholarship to Owens College , the present day University of Manchester . He excelled at university, winning many coveted prizes, including the Shakespeare prize in 1875, but his academic career ended in disgrace when he fell in love with a young prostitute, Marianne Helen Harrison. In an attempt to keep her from the streets he gave her money, and when his own funds ran short he began to steal from his fellow students. Eventually he was caught, expelled from the university, and prosecuted for theft ; he was sentenced to one month's hard labour in prison.

George Gissing (1857-1903) English author considered one of the most valuable contributors to late Victorian era literature, author of New Grub Street George Robert Gissing was born on 22 November 1857 at Thompson's Yard, Westgate, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. His father, who died when he was thirteen, Thomas Waller Gissing (18291870), was a chemist from a family of Suffolk shoemakers and his mother was Margaret Bedford (18321913). Gissing had four siblings; William, Algernon, Margaret, and Ellen. Young George was an avid reader and took advantage of the extensive family library. Though genial and bookish he was well-liked and had many friends while attending Back Lane School, Wakefield. Early on he won prizes for his poetry. He had a relatively stable childhood until his father died in 1870; he lost his main guiding force in his intellectual development. This, the first of a number of unfortunate circumstances, would have a profound and negative effect on George and his outlook on life. In the first of his many achievements to come, 1872 saw Gissing place twelfth in the kingdom in the Oxford local examinations. He won a scholarship to Owens College (now the University of Manchester). In 1874 he took his BA exam at the University of London where he placed first in England for both English and Latin and graduated in 1876.

Gissing George
Born in exile, a novel List Price: Price: You Save:
Description
Leaving his lowly Midlands home to pursue his career as a journalist among the free-thinkers of London, Godwin Peak's origins and poverty hinder him at every turn. Publishing an article attacking the hypocrisy of the Victorian Church gives him his break, but the roseate future blackens when he falls catastrophically in love with the devout Sidwell Warricombe.
Customer Reviews
Finding a place in "soiciety" As some of the other reviewers mentioned, this novel is concerned with the rigid class system of Victorian times, and also the changing attitudes towards religion. This makes it a somewhat ponderous read these days. You sort of need to know what was a conventional view or both religion and society in those days, and what wasn't. The novel is about a middle class man who wants desperately to fit in to upper class society. This was easier said than done in those days. He might be an atheist, who believes in evolution... but still he wants gain favor with the "right people." In fact he wants it so bad, that he pretends to be something he is not, and goes so far as to begin studying for the priesthood. Well, when he starts a-courtin' one of the upper class ladies her family finds him out.

The Odd Women (Oxford World's Classics)
by George Gissing from Oxford University Press, USA
A novel of social realism, The Odd Women reflects the major sexual and cultural issues of the late nineteenth century. Unlike the "New Woman" novels of the era which challenged the idea that the unmarried woman was superfluous, Gissing satirizes that image and portrays women as "odd" and marginal in relation to an ideal. Set in a grimy, fog-ridden London, Gissing's "odd" women range from the idealistic, financially self-sufficient Mary Barfoot to the Madden sisters who struggle to subsist in low paying jobs and little chance for joy. With narrative detachment, Gissing portrays contemporary society's blatant ambivalence towards its own period of transition. Judged by contemporary critics to be as provocative as Zola and Ibsen, Gissing produced an "intensely modern" work as the issues it raises remain the subject of contemporary debate. List Price: $14.95
