Biography
Germany's most famous writer, a great literary genius of imagination and versatility who was unsurpassed as a poet and whose name is entered in the pages of history as one of the world's great thinkers. He was the first-born child and only son of Johann Kaspar Goethe, a serious-natured man who had studied law and held the administrative post of imperial councilor. Goethe's mother, Katharina Elisabeth Textor, was the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt, and in contrast to her husband, was lively, perceptive and full of fantasy. Goethe was tutored at home and became accomplished in music, art and six languages by the time he left home for Leipzig University and law school in 1765. Among his most important early literary experiences from his family influence were the Bible, Homer, and Klopstock's "Messiah." He fell seriously ill in 1768, returned home and was influenced by his mother's devout friend, who was to have central influence on his spiritual growth, recounted in Bk. 6 of "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre." He also had alchemical studies which later had a bearing on "Faust." He went to Strasbourg in March 1770 to complete his studies in law. His 18 months there represented a rapid development of his mind and unfolding of his talent. His many romances and innate poetic nature inspired much of his most significant literary work.

SUMMARY Goethe viewed the writing of poetry as essentially autobiographical, and the works selected in this volume represent more than sixty years in the life of the poet. In early poems such as aPrometheus, a he rails against religion in an almost ecstatic fervor, while aTo the Moona is an enigmatic meditation on the end of a love affair. The "Roman Elegies" show Goetheas use of Classical meters in an homage to ancient Rome and its poets, and aThe Diary, a suppressed for more than a century, is a narrative poem whose eroticism is combined with its morality. In selections from "Faust," arguably his greatest and most personal work, Goethe creates an exhilarating depiction of humankindas eternal search for truth.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(August 28, 1749 - March 22, 1832) by Jane K. Brown, University of Washington
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe;
oil painting by Heinrich Kolbe, ca. 1822-1826 (Goethe-Mesum Duesseldorf)

Most of the available information about Goethes's earliest years comes from his autobiography, Aus meinem Leben: Dichtung und Wahrheit (From my life: Poetry and Truth, 1811-1813; translated as Memoirs of Goethe: Written by Himself, Dichtung und Wahrheit describes the development of this concern for the real und natural as the most important advance Goethe made in Leipzig. His earliest surviving works date from this period: two collections of unpretentious social poems with mythological imagery in the style of the Greek poet Anacreon -the *Buch Annette* (Book for Annette), a manuscript discovered in 1895, and the Neue Lieder (New Songs, 1770), both inspired by Anna Katharina Schoenkopf, daughter of the lanlord in the inn where Goethe dined- and two short plays in alexandrines. The first play, Die Laune des Verliebten (The Wayward Lover, 1806) is a pastoral comedy in which a jealous lover is cured when he learns that he, too, can be unfaithful; its naturalness resides in its simplicity. The second

JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE (1749-1832) The following biography was originally published in European Theories of the Drama JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE was born at Frankfort-on-Main in 1749. His early education was received at home, first under his father, and then with tutors, though the influence of his mother was strongly marked. In his Dichtung und Wahrheit Goethe tells of his early interest in puppet-plays and theaters, and in the French company of actors which remained in his native city after the Seven Years' War. These early years were devoted to literary effort, though the youth found time for at least one love-affair before reaching the age of sixteen. In 1765 he went to Leipzig and entered the University. There a second love-affair inspired a number of juvenile lyrics. Two minor plays also belong to this period. As a result of illness he was sent home, and during his convalescence he read and studied. When, in 1770, after his recovery, he went to Strassburg to study law, he was completely changed. He took up in earnest his work of criticizing French art and standing for a truly German art. He was greatly influenced by Herder, who showed him the beauty of Shakespeare . Another love-affair went far to inspire him in his first important lyrics, which were to mark a new epoch in German poetry.

Weimar, Germany Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (August 28, 1749 – March 22, 1832) was a German polymath—a painter, novelist, dramatist poet humanist , scientist, philosopher , and, for ten years, minister of state for the republic of Weimar Like Samuel Taylor Coleridge in England, Goethe was not only a gifted poet and writer but also Germany's first public intellectual. Thanks to his long life and boundless intellectual industry, he remained Germany's principle literary figure through a series of movements and upheavals in German literary history, beginning with the movement of German classicism in the late eighteenth century, continuing through the Enlightenment and the major period of German philosophy, and continuing into the Sturm und Drang Romanticism of the early 1800s. Goethe participated in all of these periods to varying degrees; in all of them, Goethe, more than any other author, was able to reach the masses of Germany with prose that was both elegant and readily accessible. His great creation, the retelling of the tale of Faust , who sells his soul to the devil for success and fame, became a kind of Enlightenment manifesto against the church and religion.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) German poet, novelist, playwright, courtier, and natural philosopher, one of the greatest figures in Western literature. In literature Goethe gained early fame with The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), but his most famous work is the poetic drama in two parts, FAUST. Like the famous character of this poem, Goethe was interested in alchemy. He also made important discoveries in connection with plant and animal life, and evolved a non-Newtonian and unorthodox theory of the character of light and color, which has influenced such abstract painters as Kandinsky and Mondrian. (from The Divine Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main, the first child of a lawyer Johann Caspar Goethe, and Katherine Elisabeth Textor, the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt. Goethe had a comfortable childhood and he was greatly influenced by his mother, who encouraged his literary aspirations. After troubles at school, he received at home an exceptionally wide education. At the age of 16, Goethe began to study law at Leipzig University (1765-68), and he also studied drawing with Adam Oeser. An unhappy love affair inspired Goethe's first play, The Lover's Caprice (1767). After a period of illness, Goethe resumed his studies in Strasbourg (1770-71). Some biographers have speculated that Goethe had contracted syphilis - at least his relationships with women were years apart. Goethe practised law in Frankfurt (1771-72) and Wetzlar (1772). He contributed to
