Gogol, Nikolai Gogol’, Nikolaj (Ukrainian Hohol, Mykola), b 1 April 1809 in Velyki Sorochyntsi, Myrhorod county, Poltava gubernia, d 4 March 1852 in Moscow.

Gogol, Nikolai [Gogol’, Nikolaj] (Ukrainian: Hohol, Mykola), b 1 April 1809 in Velyki Sorochyntsi, Myrhorod county Poltava gubernia, d 4 March 1852 in Moscow. (Portrait: Nikolai Gogol .) The most famous Russian writer of Ukrainian origin. Having graduated from the Nizhyn gymnasium , he left for Saint Petersburg in 1828 armed with a manuscript and hope for a successful literary career. His aspirations were abruptly arrested by extremely negative criticism of his sentimentally Romantic narrative poem Hans Kuechelgarten , which he published at his own expense in 1829 and copies of which he subsequently bought out and destroyed. He tried to survive economically by working as a bureaucrat, a teacher at a boarding school for daughters of the nobility , and very briefly as a lecturer of history at Saint Petersburg University. In 1836 he left Russia and, except for two brief eight-month intervals (1838–9, 1841–2), he lived abroad, mostly in Rome, until 1849, when he returned via Palestine to Russia. While working as a minor civil servant, Gogol spent his free time composing short stories based on his observations and memories of life in Ukraine. The first two volumes of these stories, Vechera na khutore bliz Dikan’ki (Evenings on a Farm near Dykanka , 1831–2), brought him immediate fame. Hiding behind the authorial mask of Rudy Panko the beekeeper, Gogol managed to portray a world where fantasy and reality intermingle in the prism of the worldly-wise but unsophisticated narrator, and thus Ukraine becomes at once fanciful, humorous, nostalgic, and somewhat poignant in its quaintness.

His closeness to Ivan haunted Gogol's memory as a lost paradise, which he strove to regain with his lifelong search for an equally ideal male friend and companion. Between the ages of twelve and nineteen, Gogol stayed at an all-male boarding school in the town of Nezhin. There, he began to write prose and poetry for the school's literary journal, had great success in school theatricals, especially in the parts of comical old women, and formed a sentimental attachment to his older fellow student, Gerasim Vysotsky.

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-52) Ukrainian-born Russian author and dramatist is deemed by many as the Father of Russia's Golden Age of Realism. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born on his parents estate in Sorochintsi, Ukraine, on 31 March, 1809. He was the first son to Vasili and Maria (ne Kosiarovski) Gogol. Though his real surname was Ianovskii, his grandfather had claimed his noble Cossack ancestors name `Gogol'. Nikolais younger brother Ivan died when Nikolai was ten, thus profoundly affecting his character, always in search of his next best friend. Young Nikolai attended the Poltava boarding school, and then went on to Nehzin high school from 1821 to 1828, where he wrote for the schools literary journal and participated in theatrical productions. With a certificate attesting to his right to `the rank of the 14th class' he moved to St. Petersburg in 1829 teaching history at the Patriotic Institute and tutoring from 1831-1834. At this time he ventured to publish, at his own expense, his epic narrative poem Hanz Kuechelgarten , the result of his reading German Romantics. It was not well-received.

Gogol, Nikolai (1809-1852) page: This brought down on Gogol the wrath of almost every political faction in Russia. The rest of his life was devoted to efforts to write a sequel to Dead Souls , where his picaro would be morally uplifted by associating with virtuous aristocrats and saintly millionaires. In January 1852, Gogol confessed his sexual orientation to a bigoted priest, Father Matthew Konstantinovsky, who prescribed abstinence from sleep and food, so as to cleanse Gogol's "inner filth." Gogol obeyed. He died of starvation on February 21, despite the ministrations of his friends. His death at the age of forty-three was hastened by doctors, who in order to help him, bled him profusely and subjected him to treatments that were physical tortures. Sponsor Message.

Fans who flocked to her stories will be captivated by her best-selling first novel, now in paperback for the first time. The Namesake takes the Ganguli family from their tradition-bound life in Calcutta through their fraught transformation into Americans. On the heels of an arranged wedding, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ashoke does his best to adapt while his wife pines for home.
