    Book Description
Three Novels of Ancient Egypt gives us a dazzling tapestry of ancient Egypt and reminds us of the remarkable artistry of Naguib Mahfouz. Customer Reviews: some lovely writing, but maybe not the author's best work Apparently these are the first three of the author's novels. This is a beautiful edition and it is also cheaper than buying the three paperback novels separately. There is an introduction, a chronology of the author's life, and then the three novels. The introduction is a missed opportunity. I think that I might have appreciated these novels better with the help of some information about the culture in which they were written. However the introduction offers little more than plot summary. I recommend skipping it. The chronology is nice, but not tied in with the introduction.

Talking about playing the classics, including Hamlet JUDI DENCH Actor Reflects on childhood and deciding to be an actress Classic Audio Interviews Nadine Gordimer b1923 For almost 50 years an ardent opponent of apartheid, Nadine Gordimer was born in a small town in the Traansvaal, South Africa. The daughter of Jewish immigrants, she had a middle-class upbringing and education, attending private schools and the University of Witwatersrand. Her first story was published when she was 15, but she did not attract much attention until her first novel, The Lying Days in 1953. Gordimer writes in a controlled, unsentimental style that contrasts with her subject matter: the effect of apartheid on the lives of South Africans and the frustrations of life in a racially-divided country. With a skilful use of small details, she describes the daily lives of South Africans, black, white and coloured, as they go about their affairs in a flawed and artificial society. Feelings of exile and alienation pervade her novels and short-story collections, such as The Soft Voice of the Serpent (1956) and Not For Publication (1960).

    "Berlin - Johannesburg"
    Opening Speech by Nadine Gordimer
    20 May 1998 at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg
Dear friends of the Goethe-Institute!
Unfortunately - such is the way with film projects - the documentary is in the final stages of production but is not completed. So - with apologies - I shall do my second-best and try to present something of it in words in place of images.
How did it come about that two South Africans, myself and Hugo Cassirer, decided to make a film about Berlin - indeed, had the presumption to want to make one? What was Berlin to us?
mis en scene of a few movies, and the setting of some novels. Then, that year I met a born Berliner, a Jew who had been stripped of his German citizenship by the nazis and had fled to South Africa as an immigrant who soon became a South African citizen and had served in the South African and the British armies during the war. We married. He had a whole life, the formative years up to his mid-twenties, about which I knew nothing. I had never been to Europe, let alone Berlin.
In 1954 I went to Europe for the first time in my life. Reinhold Cassirer, my new husband, went back to Berlin for the first time since he fled for his life. He took me to Berlin. On the western side of the wasteland that lay before the Wall, he showed me

    Nadine Gordimer: "Die Hauswaffe"

    Nadine Gordimer - Die Hauswaffe
