Travelling judge Skerow, of a race of moral haiku-writing telepathic sauropods, stumbles upon two mysteries while on duty on grimy mining planet Fthel V. The same day she discovers her senior judge and colleague of 25 years was under investigation for accepting bribes, said colleague is murdered in his bedroom; and Skerow espies a genetically-altered, almost-human mermaid held captive in the display tank of a brothel window. Gotlieb's handling of a wide cast of alien, human, and post-human characters will appeal to fans of James Tiptree, Jr. Most intriguing are the Lyhhrt, who've left their home planet for an indentured servitude of 125 standard years, to act as physicians and metalworkers for the Zamos corporation of casinos and entertainment-plexes. Lyhhrt actually resemble brains, but look like robots since they encase themselves in beautifully-welded metal bodies. In Gotlieb's future, flesh is bought, sold, molded and used with the ease of gold. But some things are still worth fighting for, and the scales of justice pass sentence on greed, malice, and the breeding of slaves.

    Phyllis Gotlieb:A Judgement of Dragons
[Spoilers herein] Phyllis Gotlieb was, at one point, pretty much the only SF author that people could identify as Canadian. This has changed, but she still holds a place in the field. A Judgement of Dragons is not really a novel so much as a linked series of novelettes. They link quite stronglythe characters from earlier stories appear in later onesbut the action is fairly episodic. The stories are interesting. In the first, they run afoul of a time vortex set up by an alien Qumedni, and have to thwart it in a 19th-century Polish village. In the second, while Prandra is getting her ESP-ability tested at GalFed HQ, they are framed for murder. In the third, they attempt to break drug-runners' hold on a planet whose inhabitants can't deal with them. In the fourth, they confront the Qumedni responsible for creating their race(from Earth leopards), and the Qumedni intent on stealing the secret of bestowing sentience. The stories take a bit to get into, since a lot of time is spent from the Ungrunkhs' point of view, which is quite well-done, but which doesn't always focus on the things that would interest the reader. I would recommend them, though. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 7. %A Gotlieb, Phyllis

Advertisement If you've ever studied a museum-quality tapestry, then you know the true meaning of intricacy , been amazed that single threads could mesh to form a complex and mesmerizing whole. If you zoomed through in search of Andy Warhol's work, and missed the beauty and complexity, the awe-inspiring impact of painstaking artistry, shame on you. If you miss the rich weave of Gotlieb's treasures, you are beyond redemption. Flesh and Gold begins with a bewildering array of characters, locals, and hints of plotting by and against virtually every exotic person or race mentioned. Beings of the land make use of those from the sea. It is an unequal partnership in which the unsophisticated amphibious Folk are destined to suffer. It is a situation which will force one very special water creature to a dangerous world far away. Skerow, one of the reptilian, telepathic Khagodi, travels the universe in her capacity as a Galactic Federation judge. A chance sighting in a red-light district will take her places she can't imagine. Ned Gattes wanders the planets as a "pug" or professional fighter and, unknown to all but a few, as an agent of the GalFed. The information provided by Skerow will send him away on a mission short on details, but rife with danger. Neither can fathom the depth of the deceptions facing them. No one will understand until the action is played out what atrocities are taking place just out of sight.

The passing away of Phyllis is sad news indeed. I remember her vividly from my first meeting with her about 8 years ago at Ad Astra. Later, of course, we had constant contact via emails, SF Canada listserv and the anthology, "Fall and Rise" (where you and Phyllis shared the TOC, incidentally).
I have a modest obit for her on my blog at http://ahmedakhan.livejournal.com.

Mindworlds (Flesh and Gold, book 3) by Phyllis Gotlieb book cover, description, publication history.
    http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/g/phyllis-gotlieb/mindworlds.htm
Fantastic Fiction Authors G Phyllis Gotlieb ... Awards Mindworlds (The third book in the Flesh and Gold series) A novel by Phyllis Gotlieb Phyllis Gotlieb is the grande dame of Canadian SF. A poet with a cosmic perspective who elevates space opera to a high art. Robert J Sawyer How can you stop a conspiracy of telepaths? The alien Lyhhrt are powerful enough to read the human mind; if they find you know too much, they can erase your memory, or simply stop your heart. The normally peaceful Lyhhrt society has been splintered by technological change, the bitter legacy of their exploitation by the Zamos crime family. Now a few renegade Lyhhrt, driven mad by isolation from their group mind, seem to be planning terrible crimesor are they again being used as deadly tools in someone else's scheme? When the illicit corporation created by Zamos collapsed, it disrupted the lives of heroes as well as villains. With gambling dens shut down, gladiator Ned Gaddes has nowhere to fight. Beautiful Lorrice had hoped to sell her ESP talents to Zamos, but was forced to sell her body instead. And on the planet Khagodis, scholarly Hasso will be forced to leave his archives and unravel the shadowy web that has entangled their fate with the Lyhhrt's. The struggle that ensues provides the ultimate test of their resources - Ned's savvy toughness, Lorrice's psychic insight, and the fact that even a gentle Khagodi like Hasso could go head-to-head with a dinosaur. Like the best science fiction, Mindworlds is simultaneously exciting and thought provoking. Gotlieb offers a satisfyingly complex look at the ambiguous consequences of toppling even the most evil of empires, and the sacrifices that ordinary people must make to prevent the vacuum of power from being filled by equally corrupt forces.
