Grafton
Jersey County, Illinois
A Real American River Town
Located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, and stretching out for approximately two miles along the Illinois River, is the picturesque river town of Grafton. Founded in 1832 by James Mason, Grafton is the oldest town in Jersey County. Described as a "post office, one store, one tavern, and a number of families" in 1834, the area was being settled as early as 1812 when a blockhouse was built at the confluence for protection. Grafton’s population reached its peak at approximately 10,000 in the 1850's with employment opportunities coming from the local stone quarries, boat building and commercial fishing. The local limestone was used to build the Eads Bridge in St. Louis, the railroad bridge in Hannibal, and a bridge in Quincy. The Shafer’s Wharf Historic District was one of the largest commercial fishing centers along the Mississippi River in the late 1800's. Live fish were held in large natural pens until they were purchased, after which they were cleaned, salted, packed, and shipped. The Old Boatworks, located south of Main Street, once housed a paint house and a machine shop where paddle wheelers and later PT boats were built. Nationally known Frieman Skiffs were built here between 1850 and 1920. Today, the Old Boatworks hosts many antique and craft stalls and is open on the fourth weekend of each month from May through October. Grafton’s main industry today is tourism. The town is at the center of the region’s

Biography
American author of mystery novels, screenplays and TV. Her popular series of who-dun-it thrillers, started in 1982, are named after the letters of the alphabet, "A is for Alibi," "B is for Burglar," and on as far as letter L by 1995. Her alphabetical mystery series has sold over 7.5 million copies in the U.S. and has been translated into 24 languages. Grafton had an anguished childhood with alcoholic parents; her mom died of an O.D. on barbiturates on Sue's 20th birthday. She did stay close to her one sister, Ann. Her dad was an attorney who wrote four books including one mystery. Both parents encouraged her to read and never censored her tastes. When other girls were reading Nancy Drew, she was devouring Mickey Spillane. Grafton married during her sophomore year in college and had her daughter, Leslie. In 1961, she divorced, remarried and moved to Hollywood. She increased her family with a son, Jay, and another daughter, Jamie. The breakup of her second marriage led to a six-year bitter custody battle. (Putting her past behind her, she refuses to name or discuss her first two husbands.)

Grafton's O is On!
Written: Feb 16 '00
Product Rating: Pros: quick read
Cons: none
dillywally's Full Review: Grafton Sue The newest in Sue Grafton's alphabet series is an eye opener! O is For Outlaw is the follow up to her book N is for Noose. If you haven't read Grafton she is a mystery writer. Her first in the series A was for Alibi.
Kinsey is the main character of these books. She is an ex-cop turned private eye. She is single (although she has hinted of two ex husbands). Her nosing into everyones business always gets her into trouble. You just keep reading to see how she manages to solve the mystery!
In this book, you actually find out a little about Kinsey's past. In the other books she gives hints but never tells it all about her past. In this book she gets a lead that her ex husband is not the bad guy she once thought. He was accused of a crime at the time of their breakup. Now Kinsey has proof that he might be innocent. But, when she goes looking for him she finds out that he has been shot with the gun he had given her as a wedding gift! Read this to find out the rest!!!!

Le polar selon Sue Grafton et...
Kinsey Millhone
L'auteur
A Hollywood, où elle a travaillé pendant 15 ans, elle s'est faite connaître en écrivant des scénarii pour la télévision. Citons entre autres : "Walking Trough Fire", "Sex and the Single Parent", "Mark, I love you" et "Nurse".

WELCOME TO GRAFTON Nestled in the mountains of southern Vermont, Grafton is one of New England's prettiest villages. Many of its beautiful and historic buildings have been restored by its residents and the Windham Foundation, so today's town looks much as it did years ago. Grafton's uniqueness comes from being a real town - not a museum like re- creation - with its citizens being its most valuable resource. It is a vibrant community, still holding the traditional Town Meeting with participation from a wonderfully diverse population of 600 people. Come walk our village streets. Picnic by a covered bridge. Visit our shops, galleries and museums. Linger a few days and you will experience the beauty that surrounds us in these hills and come to embrace our peace and quiet charm.
