  • ASIN: Book Description A collection of poems by "a poet of large ambitions and reckless music. Ms. Graham writes with a metaphysical flair and emotional power".New York Times Book Review. Customer Reviews: this book is heavier than lead a world of its own... ...The Beginning of Disovery In THE END OF BEAUTY, Graham offers us a delicious deconstruction of our mythical histories, our culture, and our art. It puzzles me that few peopleeven poetry buffsdon't take to her poetry more kindly. For hardly any other contemporary poeton this side of the Atlantic, anywaytackles such philosophical, metaphysical, and aesthetic issues with as much vigor as Graham. Graham's handling of great art and twice-told tales is refreshing in its idiosyncratic usage (and criticism) of postmodern conventions. Reading this book, one cannot fail to see the connections between Graham and Donne, Graham and Derrida, Graham and Ashbery. It's important, I think, especially for readers who fail to grasp many of her ideas, to envision Graham's poetry as part of a much greater discourse between metaphysics and history.

Jorie Graham was born in New York City in 1950, the daughter of a journalist and a sculptor. She was raised in Rome, Italy and educated in French schools. She studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris before attending New York University as an undergraduate, where she studied filmmaking. She received an MFA in poetry from the University of Iowa. Graham is the author of numerous collections of poetry, most recently Sea Change (Ecco, 2008), Never Swarm (2000), and The Dream of the Unified Field: Selected Poems 1974-1994 , which won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. About her work, James Longenbach wrote in the New York Times : "For 30 years Jorie Graham has engaged the whole human contraption — intellectual, global, domestic, apocalyptic — rather than the narrow emotional slice of it most often reserved for poems. She thinks of the poet not as a recorder but as a constructor of experience. Like Rilke or Yeats, she imagines the hermetic poet as a public figure, someone who addresses the most urgent philosophical and political issues of the time simply by writing poems."

    interviewed by Mark Wunderlich
A few questions with poet and educator Jorie Graham, the 1996 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry Jorie Graham has been hailed by John Ashbery as "one of the finest poets writing today," and by the poet James Tate as "a poet of staggering intelligence." Tate adds that "Her poems are constantly on the attack. She assays nothing less than the whole body of our history, reshaping myth in ways that risk new knowledge, fresh understanding of all that we might hope to be." Here she answers questions from Mark Wunderlich on the state of the field. Wunderlich: As someone who sees many young and talented writers at the Workshop, do you observe any particular trends forming among the next generation of American poets? How do you think this generation will differ from your own or previous ones?

    The Errancy
    Jorie Graham
The Ecco Press, $22 by Bonnie Costello Jorie Graham's subject, in this impressive new volume, is desire and the error it inevitably leads us into. In our restless urge to form and fail and reform, in our apparent glimpses of utopia, we are heroically human. Poetry is not, for Graham, a place to relax.
Then the cicadas again like kindling that won't take.
The struck match of some utopia we no longer remember
    the terms of
how she wants to be legible, how the light streaking her shades
    now grows vermilion
which she would capture of course, because that, she has heard, from the rumourous diamond-dust, is what is required
