Grahame, Kenneth Biography
Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) English bank official, writer, author of THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (1908), set in the idyllic English countryside. The work established Grahame's international reputation as a writer of children's books and has deeply influenced fantasy literature. The central characters in the story are the shy little Mole, clever Ratty, Badger, and crazy Toad. They converse and behave like humans, but they all have typical animal habits, and some of the animals are eaten for breakfast by Mole, Rat, or Badger. Grahame also published essays, stories, and collections of sketches. "Beyond the Wild Wood comes the Wild World," said the Rat. "And that's something that doesn't matter, either to you or me. I've never been there, and I'm never going, nor you either, if you've got any sense at all..." (from The Wind in the Willows Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh, as the son of a lawyer from an old Scottish family. Due to the alcoholism of his father, Grahame was brought up by elderly relatives. In the early years he lived with his family in the Western highlands. When his mother died of scarlet fever, the children were sent to live with their maternal grandmother in the village of Cookham Dene, Berkshire. Her house, set in a large garden by the River Thames, provided the background of The Wind in the Willows "As a rule, indeed, grown-up people are fairly correct on matters of fact; it is in the higher gift of imagination that they are so sadly to seek."

The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame.
a) It was published in 1950.
b) I've read the second edition.
a) The translation of the title is 'De wind in de wilgen'. It has something to do with the life of the animals mentioned in this book, because they travel a lot in the open air. I think this has something to do with it.
b) The title of the book has not so much to do with the contents of it. The only link I could find is described in 3a.
This book is an adventure story, because of the many adventures the animals are going trough.
a) The scene is laid in England, mostly in forests and on the riverbank. At the end of the book the scene is laid in the more civilised world.
b) The period of time is the 19th century. I think this, because of the illustrations in the book and the cars described in the book.
a) There are a couple of main characters in the book. They are the Mole, the Rat, Mr Toad and Mr Badger.
b) Description of personalities: The Mole: a relative young and enthusiastic animal.

Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) English bank official, the author of THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS (1908). This Edwardian classic, set in the idyllic English countryside, established Grahame's international reputation as a writer of children's books and has deeply influenced fantasy literature. Its central characters are the shy little Mole, clever Ratty, Badger, and crazy, energetic Toad. They all converse and behave like humans, but have at the same time typical animal habits. Some animals are eaten for breakfast. Grahame also published essays, stories, and collections of sketches. Grahame's personal life was not as happy as the fictional world of his novel. "Beyond the Wild Wood comes the Wild World," said the Rat. "And that's something that doesn't matter, either to you or me. I've never been there, and I'm never going, nor you either, if you've got any sense at all..." (from The Wind in the Willows Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh, the third of four children. His father, James Cunningham Grahame, was a lawyer from an old Scottish family, and mother Bessie (Ingles) Grahame, the daughter of of John Ingles of Hilton, Lasswade. In the early years, he lived with his family in the Western Highlands, near Loch Fyne. Grahame's mother died of scarlet fever when he was five. Grahame, Kenneth
(b. March 8, 1859, Edinburghd. July 6, 1932, Pangbourne, Berkshire, Eng.), author of The Wind in the Willows (1908), one of the English classics of children's literature. Its animal charactersprincipally Mole, Rat, Badger, and Toadcombine captivating human traits with authentic animal habits. It is a story that adults have enjoyed as much as children. Orphaned at an early age, he went with his two brothers and his sister to live with his grandmother in England and attended St. Edward's School, Oxford. Money was lacking for him to go to the university; hence his family guided him into a career at the Bank of England, with which he stayed until ill health compelled him to retire in 1907. Meanwhile he contributed articles to such journals as the St. James Gazette and the Yellow Book and published collections of sketches, stories, and essays Pagan Papers The Golden Age (1895), and Dream Days (1898)all of which reveal his sensitive understanding of childhood. The Wind in the Willows was dramatized by A.A. Milne as
