Biography
British writer, a novelist, poet and critic, essayist, translator and general man of letters. He earned his living with historical novels, some 140 books, but his first love was always poetry. He was the author of "I, Claudius," 1934 which was made into a gripping TV presentation, the nonfiction, "A Survey of Modernistic Poetry," 1927, and "The White Goddess" (1948) Graves' presented himself as independent-minded and rebellious of traditional British regime in education and the military in his autobiography, "Good-Bye to All That," which he wrote in a furious 11 weeks in 1929; revised 1957. His rendition of his experiences during WW I angered some by introducing humor into his memoirs, but amused and intrigued others. His friend said that Graves "had the largest feet in the army and a genius for putting both of them in everything." Despised by middle-class officers, who thought him a bounder and a cad, he was considered "capital" by his working-class men who respected him for his loyalty to them and later, for his courage in combat. During the Battle of the Somme, he was wounded so severely by shrapnel that it was a wonder that he survived.

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Robert Frost) Next (Robert Grosseteste) Robert von Ranke Graves (July 24 , 1895 – December 7, 1985) was a major English poet of the twentieth century. Graves lived through the developments of Modernism and Postmodernism , a period of intense experimentation of poetic form. Nonetheless, Graves remained a traditionalist, writing poetry strictly in meter and rhyme to the end of his days. Although he was extremely idiosyncratic and belonged to no "school," Graves is often readily compared to Robert Frost , in that both poets were conservatives who fought to maintain poetic values. Like Frost, Graves' poetry tends to be brief, lyrical, and extremely ironic. Graves' talent for love poetry in particular is unquestioned, and and some consider him the most gifted love-poet in the English language, alongside W.B. Yeats In addition to poetry, Graves also wrote a number of novels and works of criticism. Graves himself disowned his fiction, but critics and audiences alike continue to regard his novels highly. His most notable work of fiction, the historical novel I, Claudius

    The Cool Web
Children are dumb to say how hot the day is, How hot the scent is of the summer rose, How dreadful the black wastes of evening sky, How dreadful the tall soldiers drumming by. But we have speech, to chill the angry day, And speech, to dull the rose's cruel scent. We spell away the overhanging night, We spell away the soldiers and the fright. There's a cool web of language winds us in, Retreat from too much joy or too much fear: We grow sea-green at last and coldly die In brininess and volubility. But if we let our tongues lose self-possession, Throwing off language and its watery clasp Before our death, instead of when death comes, Facing the wide glare of the children's day, Facing the rose, the dark sky and the drums, We shall go mad no doubt and die that way.

Over the Brazier . By 1917, though still an active serviceman, Graves had published three volumes. In 1918, he spent a year in the trenches, where he was again severely wounded. In January 1918, at the age of twenty-two, he married eighteen-year-old Nancy Nicholson, with whom he was to have four children. Traumatized by the war, he went to Oxford with his wife and took a position at St. John's College. Graves's early volumes of poetry, like those of his contemporaries, deal with natural beauty and bucolic pleasures, and with the consequences of the First World War. Over the Brazier and Fairies and Fusiliers earned for Graves the reputation as an accomplished war poet. After meeting the American poet and theorist Laura Riding in 1926, Graves's poetry underwent a significant transformation. Douglas Day has written that the "influence of Laura Riding is quite possibly the most important single element in [Graves's] poetic career: she persuaded him to curb his digressiveness and his rambling philosophizing and to concentrate instead on terse, ironic poems written on personal themes."
