    Description
A modern vision of hell, Lanark is set in the disintegrating cities of Unthank and Glasgow, and tells the interwoven stories of Lanark and Duncan Thaw. A work of extraordinary imagination and wide range, its playful narrative techniques convey a profound message, both personal and political, about humankind's inability to love, and yet our compulsion to go on trying. Widely recognized as a modern classic, Alasdair Gray's magnum opus was first published in 1981 and immediately established him as one of Britain's leading writers. Comparisons have been made to Dante, Blake, Joyce, Orwell, Kafka, Huxley, and Lewis Carroll. This new edition should cement his reputation as one of our greatest living writers.

ALASDAIR TAYLOR, PAINTER: TRAVELLING EXHIBITION 2007-2009
    Dear Exhibition Officer,
You may not know of Alasdair Taylor, the Scottish painter who graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1959. It is impossible nowadays – especially in Scotland – for an artist’s work to become very well-known, if it is not promoted by a well-known dealer: in which case the work may reach important exhibitions. It is hard for curators and exhibition officers to take seriously an elderly artist whose name does not come up on a website. This can, however, lead to the neglect of good work.
Alasdair Taylor passed most of his working life in hermit-like seclusion, at an isolated cottage by Portencross, on the Clyde Firth, so his work is known to only a few. It is joyfully or mysteriously Abstract Expressionist, a school of painting that only those devoted to Installation Art will dismiss. His figure drawings and portraits are also beautiful and vigorous. His range is indicated in the catalogue for his last big retrospective exhibition. For a fortnight, December 1986, it was in Glasgow McLellan Galleries, went to the Talbot Rice, Edinburgh in 1987, and thence Aberdeen Municipal Art Galleries. This and some small private shows led to some work in private collections but none in major galleries.
In 2005 a stroke left Alasdair helpless and wheelchair-bound in a Largs nursing home. His many unsold paintings and sculptures are now safely stored by his daughter, Jean Complaisson in Lochwinnoch. With her help the following people are publicising it in a new, larger retrospective exhibition show of his work, opening in Irvine, 2007.

    Alasdair Gray

A MILD SEPTEMBER morning. A man no longer young strolls thoughtfully on a narrow footpath along a former railway line. Noises tell of a nearby motorway but brambles, elders and hawthorns on each side hide all but the straight empty path ahead until he sees a small clearing on his right. Two girls sit here at the foot of an old telegraph pole. He pauses, gazing up at the top of the pole, examining its cracked grey timber, cross-pieces with insulators like small white jam pots from which dangle broken wires. He has noticed the girls are in their teens, look surly and depressed, wear clumsy thick-soled boots and baggy military trousers from which rise pleasantly slim bodies. One says crossly, 'What are you staring at?'
'At the wires of that sad sad pole!' says the man without lowering his eyes, 'A few years ago they carried messages from this land of ours to a world-wide commercial empire.'
'A few years? It was yonks ago,' says the girl contemptuously. Without looking straight at her the man glimpses a stud piercing her lower lip and one through the wing of a nostril. He says, 'Yonks? Yes. I suppose this pole was defunct before you were born.'
