This is something of a coup for the university, and has excited all of us. Tom Leonard is wont to say that when he walks down Barrow Road people point to him and say 'sell-out!' because he's so anti-institutional. Alasdair doesn't feel as strongly as that.

Alasdair Gray
Venue: Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Dates: 22nd November 2008–10th January 2009 Preview: 21st November 2008, 6pm Notes: two person show This exhibition focuses on one strand of the art of Alasdair Gray, namely his treatment and use of the city of Glasgow and Scottish landscape, the people in it and their relationship with their environment. Including landscapes and cityscapes rarely seen, this exhibition will include works from private collections, works from the People’s Palace series of drawings and his most recent illustrations from novel, Old Men In Love (published Cannongate 2008). Alasdair Taylor’s traditional art school training in drawing and composition remained a constant in his art until the time of his death in 2007, but it is in the abstract expressionist work that a freedom of colour and form is embraced. Influenced by European Situationist movement COBRA and the painterly expressionism of artists such as John Houston and Asger Jorn, the work in this exhibition is a selection from the vast archive of canvasses, collages and assemblages created in his remote Portencross studio. There is a colour catalogue to accompany this exhibition with new commissioned essay about Alasdair Taylor’s work by Malcolm Dickson, Director of Streetlevel Gallery and a new drawing of Alasdair Gray and essay about his work by artist Stuart Murray.

Gavin Miller October 2005 Paperback Book Description Lanark Alasdair Gray Mar 1985 Hardcover Book Description From its first publication in 1981, Lanark was hailed as a masterpiece and it has come to be widely regarded as the most remarkable and influential Scottish novel of the second half of the twentieth century. A work of extraordinary imagination and wide-ranging concerns, its playful narrative conveys at its core a profound message, both personal and political, about humankind's inability to love, and yet our compulsion to go on trying. With its echoes of Dante, Blake, Joyce, Kafka, and Lewis Carroll, Lanark has been published all over the world and to unanimous acclaim. This collector's edition deluxe four-volume slipcased and numbered marks the novel's return to its original publisher and features a superb new introduction by the award-winning novelist Janice Galloway. In addition, it includes the author's... The Fall of Kelvin Walker Alasdair Gray Oct 1986 Hardcover From Publishers Weekly In this version of that venerable themethe ambitious provincial lad undertaking to conquer the worldKelvin Walker, son of a penurious grocer and afire with Nietzschean illusions about power and its uses, departs his native Scotland for London Town, the center of the universe, plotting to make it very big by starting at the . . . top. Backwater naivete and Scottish chutzpah somehow propel him to an envied position as a BBC interviewer, which allows him to rub shoulders with the cream of society. Life comes pouring in from all directions, not the least in the delicious form of Jill, through whose kindly ministrations he finds God. Eventually Kelvin topples from his eminence through a combination of overweening ambition, ultra-rightist fixed ideas and unbending North-country rigidity. Before then, foibles are...

Poor Things
Galloway, Janice
Gray, Alasdair
EDITION: 1 Edition Type: Reprint BINDING: PUBLISHER: Dalkey Archive (01/17/2002) PAGES:
SUMMARY One of Alasdair Gray's most brilliant creations, Poor Things is a postmodern revision of Frankenstein that replaces the traditional monster with Bella Baxter—a beautifulyoung erotomaniac brought back to life with the brain of an infant.Godwin Baxter's scientific ambition to create the perfect companion isrealized when he finds the drowned body of Bella, but his dream isthwarted by Dr. Archibald McCandless's jealous love for Baxter'screation. The hilarious tale of love and scandal that ensues would be "thewhole story" in the hands of a lesser author (which in fact it is, forthis account is actually written by Dr. McCandless). For Gray, though, this is only half the story, after which Bella (a.k.a. VictoriaMcCandless) has her own say in the matter.
