Green, Anna Katharine
(b. Nov. 11, 1846, Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.d. April 11, 1935, Buffalo), U.S. writer of detective fiction who helped to make the genre popular in America by creating well-constructed plots based on a good knowledge of criminal law. Green intended to be an author of romantic verse. Inspired by her father's work as a lawyer, however, she began her writing career with the detective story The Leavenworth Case (1878), which introduced her detective hero, Ebenezer Gryce, and rapidly became popular. After two more detective novels, Green wrote two volumes of poetry; after that she concentrated on detective fiction. Green's tendency to intersperse romantic characterizations and dialogue in her work sometimes makes her style old-fashioned, but her skillful plotting and technical accuracy are noteworthy. Some of her works are Lost Man's Lane The Filigree Ball The House of the Whispering Pines (1910), and The Step on the Stair Related Propaedia Topics: Twentieth-century literature The novel

The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow
Green, Anna Katharine
Anna Katharine Green was noted for her scientific approach to the murder mystery. First published in 1917 The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow breaks more ground with her in-depth study in the psychological interplay between the murderer, the victim and the witnesses. Although more quietly paced, this mystery presents many elements of a current psychological thriller: blind ambition, narcissism, obsession and betrayal.
