Shadow of Ashland ... Terence M. Green
A review by Rodger Turner
Advertisement Blue Limbo is a near-future tech-noir thriller that follows Mitch Helwig, a Toronto cop, as he goes up against a criminal gang who are out to kill him in revenge for a raid which destroyed their warehouse. Not content to lick their wounds, they try to kidnap Mitch's father, kill his best friend and threaten his daughter. In effect, they want to wreck his life. Not that it would be hard. For Mitch has just separated from his wife, had his father put into a seniors' home and buried his partner. Mitch pushes back with a dizzying array of lasers and water cannons, in this city rife with corruption and crime. What's a guy gotta do to get a little peace and quiet? Economy is the word that sprang to my mind when reading Blue Limbo . Spare, lean, trim they all apply. But I didn't feel cheated. Oh, no, gentle reader. I felt quite grateful. An odd word to use, maybe. But Terence M. Green has given me something few authors ever have. He's given me a glimpse into how to cope when events from the outside world conspire to make folk do the wrong things for what they think are the right reasons and, then, those in power go on to punish them for it. His achingly beautiful prose into the meaning of friendship and his simply elegant grasp of family and what it means to be part of one made me gasp in astonishment and gulp in throat-clearing sadness. I hope one day that I'll be able to express my thanks to him in words that reflect what this novel means to me.

Advertisement Are you one of those lucky folk who know their family history? By that I mean, do you know what your grandparents and/or your aunts/uncles are/were like as people rather that just as big folk with big voices who told you to go out and play? Yeah? Well, consider yourself lucky. Some of us didn't and wish, at times, we did. But I've had a glimpse of what this must be like. For I've been fortunate enough to read Shadows of Ashland Some dozen years ago, I was on an airline shuttle bus riding from Providence to Logan Airport after attending a convention. That weekend, I had read a freebie SF digest magazine because it contained a story by one of my favourite authors. In the same issue was a story called
