If you like well-written novels with fanciful happy endings, don’t read a Grisham novel! I have read 4 of his works to date; The Street Lawyer, The Testament, The Partner and I just put down The Rainmaker. They were all fabulous books, but they didn’t end with “happily ever after”. The Chamber is sitting on my nightstand waiting for my next free moment. I come from a family of big readers. My mom reads romances, dad reads mysteries and thrillers. They both read constantly. Mom late at night, dad on his weekly business trips. I get books tossed at me left and right. Dad has recently started reading Grisham, the first being The Street Lawyer. So when he finished, he gave it to me. From there we have been working our way through the rest of John Grisham’s novels.

His aspirations were good news for the magazine Oxford American because Grisham brought his money to bear and bought a space for the magazine to publish quality Southern writing. But as it turns out, Grisham also bought an avenue to continue pursuing his literary ambitions. In the latest issue of the Oxford American (Jan/Feb 2000), there appeared the first installment of John Grisham's serialized novel A Painted House. The previous issue, editor Marc Smirnoff (no vodka jokes please) explained the reasoning behind publishing Grisham's novel, and it boiled down to increased circulation for the magazine; oh, and Smirnoff liked the novel, too.

Da erscheint ein neues Buch von John Grisham ("Der Richter") und weit und breit ist kein Gerichtssaal zu sehen. Keine der Hauptfiguren ist Anwalt oder Richter, nicht einmal in einer kleinen Nebenrolle tritt auch nur eine Person mit juristischer Ausbildung auf. Stattdessen singt uns Grisham das harte Lied vom arbeitsreichem Leben auf dem Lande und liefert so eine Art Baumwoll-Variante von Anna Wimschneiders "Herbstmilch". Hauptfigur ist der siebenjährige Luke, der 1952 mit seinen Eltern und Großeltern auf einer gepachteten Farm inmitten der Baumwollfelder von Arkansas lebt. Jahr für Jahr müssen Wanderarbeiter angeheuert werden um die strapaziöse Baumwollernte zu bewältigen und das nackte Überleben der Familie bis zum nächsten Jahr sicher zu stellen. In diesem Jahr kampieren auf Lukes Farm eine Hinterwäldlerfamilie und eine Gruppe von Mexikanern. Zwischen diesen beiden Truppen kommt es zu Konflikten, die zu einem grausamen Mord führen. Doch dieser Handlungsstrang ist eher nebensächlich. Sehr viel interessanter sind die sensiblen Beschreibungen eines Lebens, das fast nur aus Arbeit besteht. Abwechslung bieten dabei kleine Freuden wie eine Baseball-Übertragung im Radio oder der allwöchentliche Besuch in einer Kleinstadt. Vom Meisterchronisten des US-amerikanischen Gerichtswesen war eine derart intensive Schilderung einer Jugend auf dem Lande nicht zu erwarten. Das Buch kann dabei durchaus bei ähnlich gelagerten Erzählungen von Stephen King wie "Es" oder "Die Leiche" (verfilmt als "Stand By Me") mithalten.

The book is Grisham's follow-up to the 2009 legal thriller 'The Associate', although he did release a children's crime book entitled 'Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer', earlier this year. 'The Confession' follows the story of a man who is just days away from execution, despite being an innocent man. The subject matter is familiar to Grisham, as he is a well-known campaigner against capital punishment. He is also a board member for the Innocence Project, an organisation set up to prove the innocence of wrongly convicted people through DNA testing. The novel has so far divided the opinion of literary critics, the Washington Post gave it a glowing review, saying the book was a "grab-a-reader-by-the-shoulders suspense story that demands to be inhaled as quickly as possible.a superb work of social criticism", however, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette were not so welcoming of the novel, stating that reading the book was like "spending a week in solitary confinement".
