  • ASIN: Book Description This is a bestselling account of one woman's journey into remote British Columbia, where she cleared a piece of land and built her own home. Illuminated by the author's own drawings, Cabin at Singing River is an inspiring book, realistic about how beauty can only be appreciated with hard work. The dream of shedding urban responsibilities and returning to nature is universal, and this book will inspire anyone interested in her experience. Customer Reviews: An interesting tale of life in the wilderness This is the story of Chris Czajkowski (pronounced the same as the composer Tchaikovsky). Wanting a quieter life, she leaves Salmon Arm, in British Columbia's Okanagan region. She sets up her new life some 700 miles to the northwest, in the remote Coast Mountains of South Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. Her only neighbors are Jack and Trudy Turner who have a homestead across the river from her. This book chronicles Chris' experiences in setting up a new life south of Lonesome Lake, along the Atnarko River (the "singing river" in the title refers to the musical sound of the water, not the name of the river itself). It takes a day (sometimes two) to hike to Highway 20, so she's almost entirely on her own when it comes to building her cabin. The Turners help when they can, but when the chainsaw breaks down or new materials are required, a hike out to civilization is often required. The story of the 18-month project of building the cabin is interspersed with tales of life in the wilderness. She tells of the rhythms of the seasons, the wildlife she encounters, and the explorations she undertakes to familiarize herself with the surrounding area. Her descriptions enable the reader to see the gorgeous British Columbia scenery as if they were there themselves.

I trembled because I was not an icon, only my university’s nominee for Mr. Gzowski’s “Best Minds of Our Time” series, selected by Mr. Gzowski for his imminent interview. I was afraid that I lacked the accomplishment or charm or insight of others who sat in this chair, afraid compelling words would not come to me today, afraid I would let Peter Gzowski down. Mr. Gzowski tried to soothe the trembling teenager that was me at age 48 with the reminiscence of a mutual friend, with the glass of water he gently urged toward me across his carpeted table, with the warmth of his smile and his voice. He seemed to have a cold that morning, struggling to subdue his cough, while encouraging me. Mr. Gzowski’s first on-air questions were further attempts to place me at ease. He had me talking about my past work as a physician and medical researcher, my recent work as an educator surfacing ethical issues for health care professionals and students through theatre, my current work as co-chair of Health Canada’s Advisory Committee on Reproductive and Genetic Technology.

    Gzowski, Peter (1934–2002)
Born on July 13, 1934, Gzowski began his professional career as a journalist in Saskatchewan. From the time he moved to Moose Jaw in the spring of 1957, Gzowski had a long association with that city and the province. A job offer from the managing editor of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald The Varsity . He served as city editor of the paper until his departure seven months later. During that short time, Gzowski formed a strong bond with the city. He was active in the local theatre group, and while directing a play met Jennie Lissaman, who was to become his first wife. Forty years later, after he had become a national icon as a CBC broadcaster, Gzowski chose to broadcast his final Morningside radio show from Moose Jaw and to make the occasion a fund raiser for the Festival of Words, a unique Moose Jaw group that promotes lifelong reading and literacy. Gzowski further supported literacy programs in the province by hosting the Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournaments, which raised more than $7 million. Fittingly, the 2003 Festival of Words was dedicated to Peter Gzowski. Gzowski died on January 24, 2002.

Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament (PGI)
In support of Frontier College In 1986, celebrated Canadian journalist, Peter Gzowski, invited some of his family and friends to an informal golf tournament on his home course at The Briars in Jackson's Point, Ontario. When he said that he wanted to raise "a few bucks" for literacy it was the beginning of a long, prosperous, innovative and simple fundraising initiative. Today, the PGIs are the most successful literacy fundraising events in Canada, generating more than $10 million (net funds) and held in thirteen provinces and territories. "The PGIs bring together so much that matters to me: friends, laughter, poetry, musicall playing to make a better world. Thanks to the thousands of golfers, corporate sponsors and hardworking volunteers, the PGIs have become a network that stretches from sea to sea to, as I am proud to say, sea. We've raised millions of dollars to help people learn to read and write or just make their lives a little better. And we're going to keep on doing it." - Peter Gzowski Peter passed away in 2002 and is missed by Canadians everywhere, but perhaps never more than those who knew him at his favourite activity, golfing for literacy. The tradition lives on.

Friends, Moments, Countryside by Peter Gzowski published by McClelland and Stewart 1998, 274 pages Buy it online A Clearly Canadian Voice Reviewed by Linda L. Richards His is a voice Canadians recognize perhaps more than any other. A voice in print or over the airwaves that is so distinctly of his country, it's a wonder that one doesn't hear it hawking cars or soda. And love him or hate him and there seems to be a fair number in both camps when Peter Gzowski talks, you can be sure people will have an opinion. None of this is very surprising. After all, Gzowski hosted CBC's Morningside for 15 years. Longer than other important Canadian voices that of the political types are allowed to stay in office. Gzowski's voice in radio and print has been soothing us for longer than that and many of us have come to rely on him as the oasis of calm in a media sea of frantic yammering.
One of the places that Gzowski has added his unique voice for the last 10 years has been to the pages of Canadian Living. Friends, Moments, Countryside
