Reviewed by Barbara J. Graham. Volume 16 Number 2
1988 March
This is a second collection of letters, impressions and short fiction inspired by Gzowski's daily CBC radio program. Eminently entertaining and informative the diverse contributions and Gzowski's editorial comments are just the kind of episodic reading enjoyed by those with busy schedules and little time. The collection gives the reader an opportunity to appreciate more fully and freshly, in a palatable format, much of what Canada and being Canadian is all about. One reads of love of country from Red River Valley, Manitoba, to Lawrence Town Beach, Nova Scotia, to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. One empathizes with those who are caught in "the adoption triangle," the sad plight of those who want to know more about their natural parents and parents who want to forget. One laughs, one cries and never forgets the essence of being human and humane. Gzowski simply doesn't let one. What is really impressive is the quality of writing, the breadth of concern, the sheer readability of the letters of those who have responded to the author. One can understand why an English teacher would take the first collection to China and introduce it to her students, and one can understand why they in turn responded to Gzowski. This collection of essays, letters, short fiction, even poetry, will be a refreshing addition to a secondary school library collection. All teachers will find quotations and comments to enrich their own teaching.

SHOWING HIS FUNNYSIDE . Canadian radio legend Peter Gzowski made an inspiring visit to Western yesterday in the McKellar Room.

Morningside

Gzowski's trademark smile and wit captured and maintained the attention of the diverse mixture of audience members for the duration of his one hour address.
For 15 years Gzowski's radio show was a catalyst reflecting the views of the Canadian people. From interviews with the last eight Prime Ministers to astronauts and scientists, Gzowski characterized his Morningside conversations as "reflective, civilized, thoughtful and polite."
Gzowski's humorous side radiated throughout the evening. Aside from the numerous media awards he has received, Gzowski also recognized himself as a "Canadian sex symbol." He recounted an incident where a beautiful, young female approached him saying her grandmother was his greatest fan. Nonetheless, Gzowski sustained his modesty.
"I'm not one of the world's greatest dressers," he said. "I don't dress badly on purpose, it's just that clothes and I don't get along. Socks get divorced in my drawer; zippers languish at an embarassing half mast." Gzowski's anecdotes were well received by the audience and ironically – his socks matched.

Words by Ian Tyson, music by Peter Gzowski Who is Peter Gzowski?
We used to get fine reception of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Inuktitut service here on 9625 kHz I think, but it was discontinued as I think Canadian policy is to remove all good radio from the airwaves, especially if people listen to it. No doubt all Inuit homes now have cable and McDonalds hamburgers now, but many in Britain liked that overshooting shortwave station. Be that as it may I recall a name Peter Gzowski and the name Morningside also springs to mind. Are we talking CBC man who also is a songwriter for Bob Dylan or is the name Peter in Canada, there may be several different people under the same name rather like David Davies or John Jones in Wales? Peter Gzowski did not broadcast in Inuktitut as I recall, anything from him was in English. Don't think he wrote any Inuktitut songs either. Does this make any sense to anyone? Thought not, just a coincidence.

CAB mourns passing of much-loved Gzowski Ottawa, January 25, 2002 The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) joins Canadians in mourning the passing of much-loved author, journalist, and award-winning broadcaster Peter Gzowski. Peter Gzowski was a fixture in the lives of generations of Canadians and he will be missed tremendously, said Glenn OFarrell, President and CEO, CAB. The wonderful tributes and memories that have been pouring in since late yesterday from across the country are a testament to what he has meant to so many people from all walks of life. He was and will always be remembered as the consummate Canadian. His great passion for his country, his tireless commitment to the cause of literacy, his sense of humour, and most of all, his exceptional contributions to Canadian broadcasting I cant think of anyone who embodies the values and spirit of Canada more. He overcame the vast geography of this country and brought Canadians together by letting us share and celebrate our stories. On behalf of our members, the CAB extends our sincerest condolences and wishes to Peters family and friends. The CAB is the national voice of Canadas private broadcasters, representing the vast majority of Canadian programming services, including private radio and television stations, networks, specialty and pay, and pay-per-view services.
