  • ASIN: Book Description Jessica Hagedorn has transformed her bestselling novel about the Philippines during the reign of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos into an equally powerful theatrical piece that is a multi-layered tour de force. As Harold Bloom writes, "Hagedorn expresses the conflicts experienced by Asian immigrants caught between cultures . . . she takes aim at racism in the U.S. and develops in her dramas the themes of displacement and the search for belonging." Customer Reviews: (3.5): Promising Glimps Into Philippine Culture Problems with the novel? I guess one major concern is the over-emphasis on explaining what makes a Filipino a Filipino and the constant explanation of every little tidbit of Filipino culture. The way she uses language is well-done and people can understand the Tagalog without any translations, so I wish she had chosen to take a step back and not necessarily explain every cultural tidbit she thought a non-Filipino would not know. If that's what someone wanted they would have purchased a sociology textbook.

I am now writing under weird pressure and there are days I really hate it. Expectations, according to my rodent rodeo observations, often = disappointments. Or else maybe one ends up writing simply to meet a deadline. Imposed byyou name it. Editors. Agents. Bill collectors. So I am trying not to fall into that abyss of second novelisms. . . or third.
    I hear it gets worse.
I loved writing my first novel Dogeaters because nobody gave a shit. There was so much reckless freedom in that feeling. To write when you have absolutely nothing to lose is to gain everything that matters as an artist. The willingness to take risks with content and language. And to write as if one were racing alone, racing alone with only one's self, against one's self, is an absolute thrill. And to know that one cannot afford to stop and look backdelicious.
This tour is so nasty, you have to pay your own way. 120 degree heat and humidity. No shade. Parasites in the water. Boiled English food the only thing available. Where are we? I cry every day I'm there. "B. Goode! How could you be so bad?" Elvis and the boys needle our manager Brian mercilessly, in the last-ditch effort to keep our spirits up. I want to kill B. Goode, who responds by giving us daily pep talks on the importance of working, on work as an end in itself, and the prestige of opening for the legendary Sister Mercy, rumored to be the protege and only female ex-lover of Little Richard. "Think of what you'll learn! Think of the riffs you can steal from the horn section!" Brian is hysterical and dehydrated, his pale face swollen with insect bites.

About Jessica Hagedorn Oscar V. Campomanes A novelist, poet, multimedia and performance artist. Jessica Tarahata Hagedorn had been in the United States for only three years (after moving from the Philippines at age thirteen) when her poems caught the attention of Kenneth Rexroth. Rexroth, a San Francisco-based artist, encouraged her to hone her writing and edited the book that first featured her poetry, Four Young Women (1973). Forged in the heat of the early 1970s ethnic revival, her early forays into poetry, playwriting, and short fiction employed the psychedelic and rebellious idioms particular to that period. Anthologized in Mountain Moving Day Third World Women (1973), and Time to Greez! (1975), she soon produced her first collection of poetry and fiction, Dangerous Music While in San Francisco, Hagedorn took acting lessons and subsequently developed an interest in the performing arts that was to steer her into multimedia work. Her experience as a lyricist for a band configured her poetry as one of effect and rhythm, proving congenial to her interest in interpretive readings and theater, After Joseph Papp produced her collaboration with Thulani Davis and Ntozake Shange, Where the Mississippi Meets the Amazon (1977), she moved to New York to work as a playwright and musician, involvements that stamped her poetry with distinctively performative strains. Papp produced her first play

I just bought the book from Amazon.com so the review will come later. But I am so excited about this book because the cover photograph alone tells me it is something very special. More later. Dogeaters by Jessica Hagedorn. One of the more celebrated novels in 1990. Nominated for the US National Book Award in 1990. Robert Stone (author of Dog Soldiers and Outerbridge Reach ) says "(It) is a fine achievement on a very serious scale. It succeeds in rendering the portrait of a nation in troubled times through vivid, memorable characters and with irrefutable wit and passion. This is the definitive novel of the encouter between the Philippines and America and their history of mutual illusion, antagonism, and ambiguous affection. it is a rich and satisfying work and certainly among the best novels I've read this year ..." by Jessica Hagedorn
    Houghton Mifflin: 1996
    311 pp., $22.95
ISBN: 0-395-75412-7 Review by Allen Gaborro Allen Gaorro was born March 4, 1966 in Manila, Phillipines. He is presently working as an Editorial Analyst and as a freelance writer. Allen graduated from College of Notre Dame in Belmont, CA with B.A. in Political Science. He has other work featured in AKDA Philippine Literary Magazine and in Ed's Internet Book Review As a Filipino-American author, Jessica Hagedorn deviates from the serene romanticism and composed formalism of her traditionalist Filipina peers. Inclined to eschew determinate literary conventions, Hagedorn instills the narrative of her book, The Gangster of Love , with an audaciousness worthy of her maverick genius, and with a mischievous energy that bestows her novel with a life of its own. If Hagedorn's widely-praised, first novel Dogeaters is, as writer Robert Stone called it, "the definitive novel of the encounter between the Philippines and America," then The Gangster of Love is a continuum of that motif, an absorbing postscript to the author's fictionalization of the encounters and exchanges that take place among cultures. Flaunting expressive candor with a considerable measure of eccentricism
