Customer Reviews: She was even better than I remember I remember reading about "her" when I was in my teens and I never forgot the impression that Mr. Haggard left in my mind. She was just as beautiful and yet vulnerable in the end to risk everything to go for her ideal. I love the footnotes which add believability to the story and there was so much that I had forgotten from the first read that it was even more enjoyable the second time. The mystery remains, in our time, would someone try to get back to that fountain of youth, or is it better left to keep our normal mortal coil. Enjoy! The Granddaddy of Occult Flavored Action Adventure If you have never read these novelsthe cream of Rider Haggard's workprepare yourself for sleepless nights, meals untasted, and a blessed relief from the stultifying dullness of modern life. Profound pulp doesn't get any better than this. All Hail H. Rider Haggard!

    H. Rider Haggard (1856–1925) English novelist and Victorian writer of African frontier adventure novels like King Solomon's Mines (1885) and the sequel Allan Quatermain (1887) series. H. Rider Haggard was born 22 June 1856 at Wood Farm, West Bradenham, Norfolk, England. He was the eighth of ten children to father William Meybohm Rider Haggard, (1817–1893) barrister, and his wife, poet and daughter of a merchant in the East India Trading Company, Ella Doventon. (d. 1889) Haggard attended the Ipswich grammar school and also received tutoring at home. Up to that point, disappointed in his son's progress, in 1875 Haggard's father offered to Sir Henry Bulwer, then lieutenant-governor of Natal, the secretarial service of his nineteen year old son to live with him and assist in the running of his Natal estate. Once there, for a time he accompanied Sir Theophilus Shepstone into the Transvaal where Zulus, Boers, and Britons fought for supremacy. Haggard was present in Pretoria to read the British annexation of the Boer Republic of the Transvaal because the Governor had lost his voice. In 1878 he became Registrar of the High Court in the Transvaal, an area to become part of South Africa. This period of his life would provide the initial inspiration and material for his future novels. Haggard would later dedicate

    Haggard, H. Rider Biography
Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) Prolific English writer, who published colorful novels set in unknown regions and lost kingdoms of Africa, or some other corner of the world: Iceland, Constantinople, Mexico, Ancient Egypt. Haggard's best-known work is the romantic adventure tale KING SOLOMON'S MINES (1885), which was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's famous Treasure Island . Haggard also was an agricultural reformer and a faithful servant of the British Empire. However, his depiction of other cultures has been considered more complex than was common in contemporary popular romances. "Welcome, white men from the stars," he said; "this is a different sight from what your eyes gazed on by the light of last night's moon, but it is not so good a sight. Girls are pleasant, and were it not for such as these" (and he pointed round him) "we should none of us be here to- day; but men are better. Kisses and the tender words of women are sweet, but the sound of the clashing of men's spears, and the smell of men's blood, are sweeter far! Would ye have wives from among our people, white men? If so, choose the fairest here, and ye shall have them, as many as ye will;" and he paused for an answer.' (from King Solomon's Mines Henry Rider Haggard was born in West Bradenham Hall, Norfolk, as the eight son of William Haggard, a barrister and a country squire, and Ella (Doventon) Haggard, an amateur writer. In his childhood, the young Henry Rider was seen as the family dunce by his father. Haggard was not sent to a good public school like his brothers, but he was educated at a London day-school, although privately, and Ipswich Grammar School. After failing the army entrance, Haggard went in 1875 to Natal as a secretary to Sir Henry Bulwer, Governor of Natal colony. In 1877 he joined the staff of the special commissioner. Next year he became Master and Registrar of the High Court in the Transvaal. For the rest of his life Haggard viewed with understanding the British colonial policy, sharing in this the attitudes of his friend Rudyard Kipling. On the other hand, he also traveled widely and saw the dangers of European intrusion. Thus in the end of
