  • ringtone88.com ska, one night. Surrounding the house, brandishing their shotguns and rifles..." It caught me off my guard how frankly the story began and so i read further. And further still, then before i knew it, i couldn't put it down. I read the whole book in that one sitting. The saga that is Malcom X's story, is much more complex and interesting than i had thought originally. To say that the civil rights movement in our country during the fifties and sixties was dynamic, would be an understatement. This volume outlines the theory behind the movement thoroughly and masterfully.

Alex Palmer Haley (1921-1992) American biographer, scriptwriter, and novelist, whose most famous work is ROOTS, a publishing phenomenon and international bestseller. Haley traced in it his ancestry back to Africa and covered seven American generations, starting from his ancestor, Kunta Kinte. The book was adapted to television series, and woke up an interest in genealogy, particularly among African-Americans. Haley himself commented that the novel was not so much history as a study of mythmaking: "What Roots gets at in whatever form, is that it touches the pulse of how alike we human beings are when you get down to the bottom, beneath these man-imposed differences." He said that three groups of people lived in every village. First were those you could see - walking around, eating, sleeping, and working. Second were the ancestors, whom Grandma Yaisa had now joined.
"And the third people - who are they?" asked Kunta.

Haley lived with his family in Henning, Tennessee before he returned to Ithaca with his family when he was five years old. Haley's father was a professor of agriculture at Cornell University , and a decorated World War I veteran. The younger Haley always spoke proudly of his father and the incredible obstacles of racism he had overcome. Alex Haley was enrolled at Alcorn State University at age 15. Two years later he returned to his parents to inform them of his withdrawal from college. Simon Haley felt that Alex needed discipline and growth and convinced his son to enlist in the military when he turned 18. On May 24, 1939, Alex Haley began his twenty-year enlistment with the

ALEX HALEY (1921-1992) Alexander Murray Palmer Haley, the oldest of three sons (George and Julius), was born to Simon and Bertha (Palmer) Haley on August 11, 1921, in Ithaca, New York. Six weeks after his birth, Simon and Bertha returned to Henning, Tennessee, and presented Will and Cynthia Palmer with their grandson, Alex Haley. Alex and his mother remained with the Palmers, while Simon returned to Cornell University to complete his graduate studies in agriculture. After the death of Will Palmer in 1926, Simon Haley joined his wife and family in Henning and operated the Palmer business. In 1929, Simon Haley began his teaching career, and the family moved. Two years after they relocated, Bertha Haley died in Normal, Alabama.
At the age of fifteen, Alex Haley was graduated from high school. He attended college for two years, then in 1939 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard as a messboy. While in the Coast Guard, he began writing short stories; it would be eight years later, however, before any of his stories were published. Approximately thirteen years after entering the Coast Guard, Haley became chief journalist. After twenty years of military service, Haley retired in 1959. Upon his retirement, he embarked upon a new career as a writer. He became an assignment writer for Reader's Digest magazine and later was associated with Playboy magazine, where he inaugurated the "Playboy Interviews" feature. Soon he was recognized for his insightful and in-depth interviews. His interviews of Malcolm X lead to his first book

    Biography
American writer, a journalist and novelist who shot to worldwide fame as the author of the Pulitzer Prize winning book, "Roots" in 1976. Haley preferred to write about the ordinary people in everyday life. A former member of the Coast Guard for 20 years, he found his greatest creative inspiration when he was sailing at sea and often while writing, he would book passage on a freighter or cargo vessel. Haley was born in New York and raised by his maternal grandmother in the town of Henning, Tennessee while his dad was busy getting an education in the North. His mother died when he was young. His grandma instilled the values of respect and honor in Haley as he grew up in the South. While in the Coast Guard stationed at sea, he would write letters home for his shipmates. He received hundreds of rejection slips for eight years before he sold his first article. At one point in his life he had only 18 cents and two cans of sardines. Haley put 12 years of research and writing into his personal masterpiece "Roots," the gripping history of black families from slavery to the present day. Within two years of publication, his book sold 8.5 million copies, was printed in 37 languages and made into a mammoth ABC mini-series hit production. "Roots" won 271 awards, including the coveted Pulitzer Prize. His book generated a steady stream of royalties for the next ten years, a success that enabled him to work the international lecture circuit earning $250,000 a year.
