Work, for the Night is Coming
A review of Life Work by Donald Hall "What is the secret of life?" the poet Donald Hall once asked the eighty-year-old sculptor Henry Moore. "With anyone else," Hall commented, "the answer would have begun with an ironic laugh," but Henry Moore answered the question in straight-forward, pragmatic terms: The secret of life is to have a task, something you devote your entire life to, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for your whole life. And the most important thing is—it must be something you cannot possibly do!" Now fifteen years after that interview, Hall has attempted to answer his own impossible but provocative question. His engrossing new book, Life Work , is difficult to classify but impossible to put down. Part essay, part autobiography, part family history, the volume straddles commercial genres. Described on its most literal level

Status in 1973: Missing in Action
Category: Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: HH-3 "Jolly Green Giant" Other Personnel In Incident: Patrick H. Wood, Richard A. Kibbey and Lucius L. Heiskell (missing); Dwayne Hackney (rescued) REMARKS: SYNOPSIS: The first HH3E Jolly Green Giant helicopters specifically outfitted for search and rescue arrived in Vietnam in the fall of 1965. By the beginning of 1967 there were 50 Aerospace Search and Recovery Squadron (ARRS) rescue aircraft in five squadrons in Southeast Asia. Later models of the HH3 were equipped with aerial refueling capability that gave them the range necessary to fly missions deep into North Vietnam. On 6 February 1967, Major Patrick H. Wood, pilot; Capt. Richard A. Kibbey, co-pilot; then SSgt. Donald J. Hall, flight mechanic; and A2C Dwayne Hackney, pararescueman (PJ); comprised the crew of the lead HH-3E rescue helicopter (tail #65-12779), call sign "Jolly Green 05." The call sign of the number two helicopter in the flight was "Jolly Green 36." They were participating in a search and rescue (SAR) mission for a downed Air Force pilot, Capt. Lucius L. Heiskell. Capt. Heiskell was the pilot of an O-1F aircraft, call sign "Nail 65," that was the lead aircraft in a flight of two conducting a FAC mission for strike aircraft operating in extreme western North Vietnam. His wingman was Capt. Gerald Dickey. The mission identifier was Steel Tiger, Cricket Area 4," a region that included the portion of North Vietnam bordering Laos that included the Mu Gia Pass, one of the two primary gateways into the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail via Route 15. Between 17 April 1965 and 31 December 1971, 43 American airmen were lost and listed as POW/MIAs in a 33.3-mile square window of the world known as the Mu Gia Pass.

Wood; Richard A. Kibbey; Lucius L. Heiskell (all missing) Source: Compiled by Homecoming II Project 15 March 1991 from one or more of the following: raw data from U.S. Government agency sources, correspondence with POW/MIA families, published sources, interviews. Updated by the P.O.W. NETWORK 1998. REMARKS: SYNOPSIS: On February 6, 1967, Capt. Lucius L. Heiskell was a pilot and was flying an O1F aircraft on a visual reconnaissance mission with another O1F when his aircraft was struck by enemy fire forcing him to bail out. His parachute was followed to the ground and voice contact with him indicated that immediate rescue was not feasible due to enemy troops in the area. Beeper signals continued and later an HH3E helicopter flown by Maj. Patrick H. Wood was dispatched to recover Heiskell. He was at this time located near the border of Laos and North Vietnam about 5 miles from the Mu Gia Pass. Wood's crew that day included Capt. Richard A. Kibbey and SSgt. Donald J. Hall. Heiskell was hoisted aboard, but as the helicopter was departing the area, it was hit by ground fire causing it to explode and crash. The helicopter pararescueman survived and was treated for burns. The remainder of the crew, Hall, Kibbey and Wood, as well as Heiskell, were not located. When 591 Americans were released in 1973, the crew of the HH3E was not among them. They were numbered with nearly 3000 Americans who remained missing, prisoner, or unaccounted for at the end of the war. Since American involvement in Vietnam ended in 1975, over 10,000 reports relating to Americans missing, prisoner, or otherwise unaccounted for in Indochina have been received by the U.S. Government. Many officials, having examined this largely classified information, have reluctantly concluded that many Americans are still alive today, held captive by our long-ago enemy. Whether Hall and the crew of the HH3E survived the crash of their aircraft to be captured is not known. It is not known if they might be among those thought to be still alive today. What is certain, however, is that as long as even one American remains alive, held against his will, we owe him our very best efforts to bring him to freedom. Donald J. Hall was promoted to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant during the period he was maintained Missing in Action.

Description
A candid memoir of love, art, and grief from a celebrated man of letters, United States poet laureate Donald Hall In an intimate record of his twenty-three-year marriage to poet Jane Kenyon, Donald Hall recounts the rich pleasures and the unforeseen trials of their shared life. The couple made a home at their New England farmhouse, where they rejoiced in rituals of writing, gardening, caring for pets, and connecting with their rural community through friends and church. The Best Day the Worst Day presents a portrait of the inner moods of "the best marriage I know about," as Hall has written, against the stark medical emergency of Jane's leukemia, which ended her life in fifteen months. Between recollections of better times, Hall shares with readers the daily ordeal of Jane's dying through heartbreaking but ultimately inspiring storytelling.

Have experience with this business? Write a Review. Susan S. I had Don Hall come out and replace my gaspack. They did a full inspection and found a lot of ductwork that needed replacing. Their price for both the gaspack and the ductwork repair was really reasonable and I was very happy with the work they did. They also had to come out once or twice for a service call when I had trouble with the furnace and their service rates were also very inexpensive. Report Abuse Was this review helpful to you?
