    Dashiell Hammett Biography
    Writer
    Dashiell Hammett is often called the father of the modern American detective story. Hammett was himself a private detective for Pinkerton's before turning to writing at age 28. Many of his subsequent stories featured the Continental Op, the nameless private detective a tough, smart, streetwise and unsentimental loner who became the archetype for a generation of hard-boiled mystery story detectives. Among Hammett's best-known novels are The Dain Curse The Maltese Falcon (1930), and The Thin Man (1932). The hero of The Maltese Falcon, detective Sam Spade, is a famous fictional character and was played by Humphrey Bogart in the film version of the novel. Dashiell Hammett had a long and feisty love relationship with author Lillian Hellman, which is sometimes blamed for his minimal writing output from 1934 until his death. Dashiell Hammett is often compared to and linked with hard-boiled writers Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain

TOP REVIEWS FOR COURSES THAT USE THIS BOOK University of Florida: SURVEY OF AM LIT - "Horrible class. I had Mojadidi, and she was very unhelpful. She was a biased teacher and didn't grade based on how you wrote, she graded based on what you wrote (and whether she agreed with you or not). She is extremely liberal, so if you don't swing that way either don't take her class or keep your mouth shut. Going into the final paper I easily had an A, but somehow managed to get a B+, and then she refused to let me see my final paper or describe why I received that grade. All we discussed/wrote about/read in her class either consisted of slavery, racism, how white people are racist against every other race, how other races aren't racist, how America is corrupt, and how Malcolm X was a great American. Very liberally radical and offensive in general, and especially if you're white or proud to be an American. "

    Der Malteser Falke
    aus Wikipedia, der freien Enzyklopädie Wechseln zu: Navigation Suche Der Malteser Falke (engl. Originaltitel: The Maltese Falcon ) ist ein Roman von Dashiell Hammett aus dem Jahr , der dreimal verfilmt wurde ( unter dem Titel Satan Met a Lady und ). Der Malteser Falke selbst ist dabei eine wertvolle, mit Edelsteinen besetzte Goldstatuette, die zum Zweck der Tarnung schwarz bemalt (möglicherweise emailliert) wurde. Dashiell Hammett kehrt in seinem Roman die klassische Rollenverteilung des Krimis von „ Schurke “ und „ Detektiv “ um. Im Verlauf des Romans wird es immer deutlicher, dass jeder Charakter in erster Linie seinen eigenen Vorteil sucht, ohne Moral oder Gesetze zu beachten. Der Leser wird darüber im Dunkeln gelassen, ob der Privatdetektiv Sam Spade in seinen Verhandlungen mit den Verbrechern ernsthaft an einer Zusammenarbeit interessiert ist, oder dies nur vorgibt, um den Fall zu klären. Nur ganz zum Schluss, als sich herausstellt, dass der „Schatz“ nicht gehoben werden kann, werden die geschehenen Morde aufgeklärt. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Krimis wird hier die Gesellschaft nicht in die „normalen“ Rechtschaffenen und die „unnormalen“ Verbrecher eingeteilt. Jeder erscheint als (potentiell) korrupt;

Film Noir Mystery Movies Samuel Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) is recognized as the first master of hard-boiled detective fiction. His lean writing style, cynical characters and complex plots brought a new energy to pulp magazines then went on to define the genre in movies, radio and television where the private eye series became an entertainment staple. Hammett wrote more than 80 short stories and five novels: "Red Harvest" (1929), "The Dain Curse" (1929), "The Maltese Falcon" (1930), "The Glass Key" (1931) and "The Thin Man" (1934). He created tough guys Sam Spade and the Continental Op as well as debonaire sleuths Nick and Nora Charles. He wrote a comic strip ("Secret Agent X-9"), an original radio series ("The Fat Man") and worked on numerous scripts, often simply to polish dialogue.
